Short answer: Do not automate copying Expedia.com pages or prices merely because they are visible in a browser. Expedia’s U.S. terms expressly prohibit access, monitoring or copying with a robot, spider, scraper, other automated means, or even a manual process, and they prohibit bypassing robot exclusions and creating an unreasonable load. You can still learn the JavaScript techniques safely against a local HTML fixture or a page that expressly permits automation. For live Expedia inventory, use an authorized Expedia Group API integration and its current partner terms.
This guide shows that compliant workflow: how to parse travel-card HTML, validate the result, handle JavaScript-rendered pages where permission exists, and choose between an API, a research dataset and a local fixture.
Does Expedia allow web scraping?
Expedia.com’s U.S. Terms of Service state: “You agree that you will not access, monitor or copy any content on our Service using any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means or any manual process.” The same terms prohibit bypassing robot-exclusion restrictions and actions that impose an unreasonable or large load on Expedia infrastructure. Read the current Expedia.com U.S. Terms of Service immediately before building an integration; Expedia says it may update them.
Expedia Group’s broader website Terms of Use, last modified July 22, 2026, independently prohibit automated or manual copying without express prior written permission and prohibit circumvention and disproportionate load. These are published contractual terms, not a universal legal opinion for every country or separately authorized arrangement. Public visibility is not permission.

What not to build
- Do not point a crawler, headless browser or HTTP loop at Expedia.com to collect hotel prices, availability or reviews.
- Do not add proxy rotation, CAPTCHA workarounds, stealth fingerprints or techniques intended to defeat blocks or robot exclusions.
- Do not assume slow requests, a small account or a personal project makes prohibited access acceptable.
Choose an authorized data route
| Route | Freshness and scope | Permission and reuse | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local HTML fixture or expressly permitted demo page | Fixture data is static; a permitted page may be current. | You control the fixture, or the site has granted automation permission. | Learning selectors, parsing and validation without touching Expedia. |
| Expedia Group API | Designed for current travel-inventory workflows covered by the selected product. | Partner access, product specifications and API terms apply. Travel Content cannot be freely redistributed. | An authorized booking or search experience. |
| Expedia academic dataset | A particular research release, not a live inventory feed. | CC BY-NC 4.0 plus additional repository terms, attribution and noncommercial limits; no endorsement implied. | A properly scoped academic or research project after reviewing the license. |
The official Expedia Group Developer Hub API catalog includes Rapid products for lodging and vacation rentals, car rental and activities, plus an API Explorer for intended use cases, parameters, responses and error codes. Its car-rental description says it reaches 47,000 vendors across more than 190 countries; Expedia Group publishes that figure, and the page does not state a year. It describes the car-rental product, not hotel availability.
API access is governed by Expedia Group’s API access terms. Those terms describe partner access, require use according to the specifications and for procuring a booking on Expedia websites, restrict altering or redistributing Travel Content, and constrain incorporating API data into AI models to the model used to drive traffic to Expedia. Obtain the required access and read the complete current terms before coding.
A safe JavaScript scraping exercise
The following example deliberately reads a local fixture. It demonstrates the same core skills—stable selectors, normalization, validation and structured output—without sending an automated request to Expedia. Replace the fixture only with a target whose owner expressly permits automation.
1. Create a local fixture
Save this as fixture.html:
<!doctype html>
<html>
<body>
<article class="hotel-card" data-hotel-id="demo-101">
<h2 class="hotel-name">Harbor Example Hotel</h2>
<span class="rating">4.4</span>
<span class="price">$189 per night</span>
<span class="location">Seattle, WA</span>
</article>
<article class="hotel-card" data-hotel-id="demo-102">
<h2 class="hotel-name">Example Market Suites</h2>
<span class="rating">4.1</span>
<span class="price">$143 per night</span>
<span class="location">Portland, OR</span>
</article>
</body>
</html>
2. Install a parser
In a new directory, run:
npm init -y
npm install cheerio
Cheerio parses HTML without launching a browser. That is ideal for a static fixture or permitted server-rendered page. It cannot execute page JavaScript.

3. Parse, normalize and validate
Create scrape-fixture.js:
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const cheerio = require('cheerio');
function requiredText($, root, selector, field) {
const value = $(root).find(selector).first().text().replace(/\s+/g, ' ').trim();
if (!value) throw new Error(`Missing ${field}`);
return value;
}
function parsePrice(text) {
const match = text.replace(/,/g, '').match(/(\d+(?:\.\d{1,2})?)/);
if (!match) throw new Error(`Invalid price: ${text}`);
return Number(match[1]);
}
(async () => {
const html = await fs.readFile('fixture.html', 'utf8');
const $ = cheerio.load(html);
const hotels = [];
$('.hotel-card').each((index, element) => {
const id = $(element).attr('data-hotel-id');
if (!id) throw new Error(`Card ${index} has no hotel id`);
const name = requiredText($, element, '.hotel-name', 'name');
const location = requiredText($, element, '.location', 'location');
const ratingText = requiredText($, element, '.rating', 'rating');
const rating = Number(ratingText);
if (!Number.isFinite(rating) || rating < 0 || rating > 5) {
throw new Error(`Invalid rating for ${id}`);
}
const priceText = requiredText($, element, '.price', 'price');
const price = parsePrice(priceText);
hotels.push({ id, name, location, rating, price, currency: 'USD' });
});
if (hotels.length === 0) throw new Error('No hotel cards found');
console.log(JSON.stringify(hotels, null, 2));
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error.message);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Run node scrape-fixture.js. The script emits a JSON array, fails loudly when a required field is absent, and bounds ratings to the expected 0–5 range. A production schema should also record the source, retrieval time, date range, occupancy assumptions, taxes and fees rather than treating a displayed “per night” number as a final booking total.
4. When a permitted page needs a browser
Client-rendered content may not exist in the initial response. With written permission, use a browser automation library such as Playwright, wait for a specific semantic selector, then extract only the fields your agreement allows. Rendering JavaScript does not override terms. Keep the job bounded: one known URL, a modest timeout, no personal data, and no attempts to evade access controls. Cache results where the permission and API policy allow it, and stop on consent walls, bot checks or unexpected access restrictions instead of trying to defeat them.
Can I scrape Expedia hotel prices?
Not from Expedia.com through an automated or manual copying process under the cited U.S. terms, absent separate authorization. A hotel price is still Service content; its being visible in a browser does not create a scraping license. For a live, authorized product, identify the appropriate Expedia Group API, complete partner onboarding, follow its request and display rules, and preserve the response’s meaning. Do not present API Travel Content as a freely reusable database or redistribute it outside the permitted purpose.
Can I use Expedia data for a research project?
ExpediaGroup maintains a separate repository for an academic and research dataset. Its terms apply CC BY-NC 4.0 plus additional requirements, disclaim data warranties, prohibit implying Expedia endorsement and reserve the right to modify or discontinue the dataset or access. That release is not authorization to scrape Expedia.com and is not a live inventory feed. Check the repository’s current terms, document attribution and noncommercial use, and obtain institutional approval where required before analysis or publication.
Troubleshooting a compliant parser
“No cards found”
Inspect the fixture or permitted response and confirm that the selector matches the actual markup. If content appears only after rendering, use an allowed browser workflow and wait for a stable selector. Do not respond by probing Expedia.com.
Prices parse incorrectly
Currency symbols, thousands separators, ranges, taxes and localized decimal marks require an explicit parser. Store the original text alongside the normalized number, and record currency and billing period. Never infer a total from a nightly teaser.
Fields are missing intermittently
Treat missing data as a validation error or an explicit null, not as zero. Log the URL or fixture identifier, selector and timestamp. Schema changes on a permitted site should trigger review rather than silent collection of the wrong field.
A request returns a block, CAPTCHA or robots restriction
Stop. Do not rotate identities, bypass the check or increase load. Confirm that the target grants automation; otherwise switch to the authorized API, dataset or local fixture.

The API response cannot be shared
Review the API access terms and your partner agreement. Expedia’s cited terms restrict altering and redistributing Travel Content, so design your application around the permitted booking purpose and display requirements.

- Fixture: fastest, deterministic and free of network failure, but it has no live-data freshness.
- Permitted page: browser rendering costs more CPU and time than parsing HTML; wait on a selector rather than an arbitrary long delay, and cap concurrency.
- API: use documented parameters, pagination and error codes; persist request identifiers and response timestamps, and implement bounded retries only for transient errors allowed by the terms.
- Research dataset: suitable for reproducible analysis of that release, not availability monitoring or booking decisions.
Separate extraction from downstream storage. Validate each record before writing it, keep a change log for selector or schema updates, and delete data you do not need—especially personal information. These controls improve correctness without attempting to defeat a site’s defenses.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image of an authorized page rather than structured travel data, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-call website screenshot API. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Use it only for a URL you are authorized to capture. The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF, full-page or selector captures, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, blocking rules, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs and bulk capture. Every feature is on every plan: 1,000 shots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is browser-visible Expedia content automatically public-domain data?
No. Visibility in a browser does not grant permission to automate copying or redistribute the content; the applicable terms and authorization control.
Does the local JavaScript example contact Expedia?
No. It reads only the file you create locally, so it is suitable for learning selectors and validation without making a request to Expedia.com.
