For a normal public webpage, Excel’s built-in Power Query connector is the simplest route: open Data > From Web, paste the page URL, select the detected table in Navigator, optionally clean it in Power Query, and load it into a worksheet. For repeatable jobs, use Python and pandas; for a quick formula-based import, Google Sheets’ IMPORTHTML can be copied into Excel later.
Use Excel Power Query first
Excel calls this workflow From Web. Depending on your edition and interface, the command appears as Data > From Web or Get Data > From Other Sources > From Web. Microsoft’s current connector documentation covers Excel desktop and online experiences, and labels can vary by platform and version.
- Open the public webpage that displays the table and copy its URL.
- In Excel, choose Data > From Web (or the equivalent Get Data path).
- Paste the URL and connect. If Excel asks how to access the page, choose an authentication method that you are authorized to use.
- In Navigator, review every suggested table. Select a preview and check its column headings and several representative rows.
- Choose Load to insert the result as an Excel table, or choose Transform Data to open Power Query Editor first.
Do not select a result merely because it is the first item in Navigator. Pages commonly contain navigation, footer, pricing, and data tables together. The preview is your verification step.
Clean the data before loading
In Power Query Editor you can remove unwanted columns, filter rows, split or merge columns, change data types, and rename headers. Set identifiers such as product codes, ZIP codes, or account numbers to Text before loading if they contain leading zeroes. Otherwise a numeric conversion can turn 00127 into 127.

When the structure is not detected correctly, inspect the connector’s Web View and try Add Table Using Examples. Enter a few values that belong to the desired columns; Power Query can use those examples to infer the extraction.
Refresh an imported table
After loading, select a cell in the resulting table and use Query Refresh (the exact label can differ slightly by Excel build). Refresh retrieves the current source according to the query steps you saved. It does not guarantee that a site has retained the same HTML structure or that restricted content will remain accessible.
When the URL is an API or file, use the matching connector
A URL that looks like a webpage may actually return JSON, XML, CSV, an Excel file, or another API response. Microsoft distinguishes the Web page connector from Web API and file-specific connectors. If the address is an API endpoint or downloadable file, choose that connector instead of treating the response as an HTML page. You will usually get more reliable column names and data types.
For authenticated or restricted sites, use only an account and access method you are permitted to use. Desktop Power Query supports several authentication choices, including anonymous, Windows, basic, Web API, and organizational-account options, while availability differs across platforms.
Google Sheets alternative: IMPORTHTML
Google Sheets can extract a table with a formula, then you can download the sheet as an Excel workbook. The documented syntax is:
=IMPORTHTML(url, query, index)
Set query to "table" or "list", and set index to the 1-based position of the table or list on the page. For example:
=IMPORTHTML("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_India","table",4)

Table and list positions are counted separately. If the page has three lists and four tables, the fourth table is still indexed as table 4, not table 7.

Refresh and access behavior
Google documents that IMPORTHTML, IMPORTXML, and IMPORTDATA check for updates every hour while the spreadsheet document is open. That is a checking cadence, not a promise that every source will refresh immediately. External imports can also be subject to usage throttling and may ask you to allow access to the external URL.
Programmatic extraction with Python and pandas
Python is preferable when the import must be repeatable, tested, or followed by substantial cleaning. Install the packages in an environment you control:

This script reads all HTML tables, prints their shapes, chooses one, preserves a code column as text, and writes an Excel workbook:

The pandas guide also documents selecting by visible text with match=, or by HTML attributes with attrs=, plus options for headers, index columns, skipped rows, missing values, and converters.
Select by text or HTML attributes
If the page contains several tables, narrow the read operation instead of relying on position:

When the table has a stable identifier or class, use attributes:

Use a converter when a column must remain text during parsing:
tables = pd.read_html(

Inspect the resulting dataframe before exporting. A parser can legally return a table while still interpreting merged cells, multi-row headers, blank cells, or numeric-looking identifiers differently from your business rules.

Choose Power Query for a one-off or analyst-maintained workbook, IMPORTHTML when a simple sheet formula is enough, and pandas when you need a controlled, repeatable pipeline. None of these methods works identically on every site: results depend on the page’s HTML, access controls, client-side rendering, and whether the data is actually delivered through an API or file.

What to check after import
- Headers: confirm that the first row is a real header and that grouped or multi-row headings were not flattened unexpectedly.
- Row count: compare a few known records and look for pagination, lazy-loaded rows, or omitted sections.
- Types: verify dates, decimal separators, percentages, currency symbols, and identifiers with leading zeroes.
- Blanks and shifts: inspect rows around merged cells, footnotes, and intentionally empty values.
- Encoding: check accented characters and non-Latin text before distributing the workbook.
- Provenance: retain the source URL and import date in a worksheet note or query description.
Troubleshooting common failures
Excel shows the wrong table
Compare Navigator previews and headings rather than table order. Open Web View and try Add Table Using Examples when automatic detection is ambiguous. If the page uses an API or downloadable file, switch to the corresponding connector.
No table appears
The visible grid may be rendered by JavaScript after the initial HTML response, protected by authentication, or supplied by an API call. Check whether the site offers a permitted export or documented API. A Web page connector cannot turn an inaccessible response into a table.
Values are malformed
Transform the affected columns explicitly. Set codes and other identifiers to Text, remove display-only currency symbols before numeric conversion, and inspect rows containing merged cells or footnotes.

Confirm the URL, use the correct 1-based table index, and remember that list and table numbering are separate. Approve external access if Sheets requests it. Google’s hourly checking and usage limits mean that an update is not necessarily immediate.
Python cannot parse the page
Check that the URL returns HTML and that the required parser dependencies are installed. Try match= or attrs= to identify the intended table. If the server returns an API payload, use an API request and normalize that response instead of forcing HTML parsing.
