Short answer: don’t assume you can scrape Amazon product pages just because they are publicly viewable. Amazon UK’s terms restrict extracting substantial parts of its services for reuse without express written consent. If you need Amazon product information for an Associates use case, apply for Amazon’s Product Advertising API (PA API) and follow its current license and specifications. Neither a screenshot tool nor Amazon’s robots.txt guidance grants permission to collect or republish product data.
First decide what you need the data for
“Scraping Amazon” can mean anything from checking one price by hand to repeatedly collecting listings and building a searchable database. Those are different activities, and the answer depends on the applicable marketplace terms, your purpose, the amount collected, and how you plan to use or retain the information.
This article is not a legal opinion. The directly cited extraction restriction below is from Amazon UK’s Conditions of Use & Sale. Check the terms for the marketplace you intend to use; do not assume that one marketplace’s wording settles the rules everywhere.
- One-off research: If you only need to compare a few items, use the pages manually and record only what you need. Manual access is not a blanket permission to republish Amazon content or to build a database.
- Program-based product display or promotion: If your project is intended to advertise an Amazon site and drive sales there, investigate the Associates program and its PA API eligibility and license.
- Bulk collection, monitoring, or reuse: Do not start with an automated crawler and assume public visibility is authorization. First obtain any required express written consent or use a specifically authorized data route whose terms cover your use.
What Amazon UK says about automated extraction
Amazon UK’s Conditions of Use & Sale state: “You may not utilise any data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools to extract (whether once or many times) for re-utilisation any substantial parts of the content of any Amazon Service, without our express written consent.” The same terms say users may not create or publish a database featuring substantial parts of the service, giving prices and product listings as examples.

The wording is about Amazon UK and substantial parts of Amazon Service content for reuse. It is not a complete answer to every possible one-off collection, every country’s law, or every marketplace’s contract. Read the terms that apply to your marketplace and get qualified advice for a consequential or uncertain use.
Most importantly, don’t treat technical access as permission. A page loading in a browser, a successful HTTP response, or a tool capable of rendering a page does not itself authorize extraction, aggregation, retention, or republication.
Can you use Amazon product data without scraping?
Manual research for a small number of products
For a limited comparison, visit the relevant marketplace pages yourself and note the facts needed for your private decision. Avoid copying substantial listing content into a public catalog or treating a spreadsheet of prices and listings as automatically permissible. If the data will be published or used commercially, check the applicable marketplace terms and permissions before collecting it.
Amazon Associates Product Advertising API
Amazon Associates offers the PA API as a conditional route for eligible program participants. Amazon’s help page lists three requirements: an open Associates account, compliance with the Associates Operating Agreement, and a separate application for API access followed by compliance with the API license. An Associates account alone is not API access, and approval is not a blanket license to copy or repurpose product content.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Amazon’s Associates policy describes Product Advertising Content as being provided under a limited license for participation in the program. Use is tied to program purposes, including advertising and marketing an Amazon site and driving sales there, and is subject to the applicable policies and specifications. The policy also places restrictions on extracting or repurposing content, caching product content, and displaying certain content. Before implementing a feature, consult the current Associates license, operating agreement, and API specifications for the exact marketplace and use case.
Do not build a general product-data warehouse on the assumption that API credentials make any downstream use acceptable. Confirm what content may be displayed, where and how it may appear, what may be retained, and what may be used for other purposes. If your intended use does not fit the program terms, seek a separate authorization or choose a different source whose license covers it.
Third-party data services
A third-party provider is not automatically authorized to collect Amazon content simply because it offers an API or dataset. Before relying on one, establish what source and collection rights it has, which marketplaces and fields are covered, how current the data is, and whether its license permits your display, retention, and reuse. No specific provider is recommended here.
Compare the practical options
| Route | Access and eligibility | Purpose and reuse | Freshness and limits | Implementation and upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual page research | Visit pages yourself; marketplace terms still apply. | Do not infer that manual viewing permits substantial copying, database publication, or other reuse. | Reflects what you see at that visit; no recurring update is built in. | Simple for a small number of products; labor grows with scale. |
| Associates PA API | Requires an open Associates account, compliance with the Operating Agreement, and separate API access application and approval. | Limited program license; follow current license, policies, and specifications. Not general permission to scrape. | Access and request rate are conditional; the help-page rate details are described below. | Requires enrollment, API integration, and ongoing compliance with changing documentation. |
| Third-party data service | Depends on the provider and its demonstrated rights; assess the specific marketplace and source. | Depends on its contract and provenance. Verify display, retention, and reuse terms. | Provider-specific; verify update timing and any limits directly. | May reduce collection engineering, but requires provider and license review. |
PA API rate limits: check the current help page
Amazon.com Associates Central’s undated help page, crawled September 30, 2026, states an initial allowance of 1 request per second. It says the rate can increase by 1 request per second for each $4,600 in qualifying shipped revenue in a trailing 30-day period, up to the page’s stated maximum of 10 requests per second. These are Amazon’s program figures, not an independent performance benchmark, and they may change. Verify the current rules before designing a workload; do not assume a new applicant has the maximum rate.

Rate eligibility is only one operational constraint. It does not expand the permitted purpose of the content, remove display or retention restrictions, or authorize a workflow that otherwise violates the Associates terms.
Why robots.txt does not authorize scraping Amazon
Amazon’s About Amazonbot documentation explains how webmasters can control Amazon-listed crawlers visiting their own websites, including use of robots.txt directives and stated exceptions. That guidance is about Amazon’s crawlers and how they access other websites. It is not a grant of permission for third parties to crawl Amazon retail pages.
Robots.txt is not a substitute for reading the terms that govern your access, and a rule in a site’s robots.txt file should not be presented as a legal authorization. Keep these questions separate: what a crawler is instructed to do, what a service’s terms allow, and what the law permits in a particular jurisdiction.
Keep Associates traffic rules separate from data access
Amazon Associates participation requirements also prohibit artificially generated clicks or impressions and using robots or software programs to create Amazon sessions. That is a separate program-compliance issue from whether a particular data collection method is allowed. If your workflow opens Amazon links or sessions programmatically, review the current participation requirements rather than assuming API eligibility resolves the issue.

A cautious implementation workflow
- Write down the use case. Specify the marketplace, fields needed, number of products, update frequency, audience, and whether the information will be stored, displayed, or shared.
- Check the applicable marketplace terms. Use the terms for the Amazon marketplace involved. The cited extraction wording in this article is from Amazon UK and should not be silently generalized to other marketplaces.
- Choose a permitted route before coding. For small private comparisons, consider manual research. For a qualifying Associates use, review PA API enrollment and its license. For other uses, obtain express written consent or verify a third-party provider’s rights and license.
- Confirm content handling rules. Check current restrictions on display, caching, retention, extraction, and repurposing. Avoid building features around assumptions copied from another marketplace or an outdated implementation guide.
- Design for access limits and failures. If you are approved to use an API, implement its current rate rules and error handling. Do not attempt to evade access controls or use software to manufacture Associates sessions, clicks, or impressions.
- Re-check policy before launch and when the use changes. A new marketplace, public database, additional fields, or new downstream use can change which permissions and terms matter.

If you have permission to capture a page, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. A screenshot is a visual capture, not structured product data and not permission to collect or reuse Amazon content. Do not use it to bypass Amazon’s terms. For an authorized page, the cURL form is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example target only with a page you are authorized to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Troubleshooting common project blockers
“The page is public, so can I collect it?”
Public visibility is not the same as permission for automated extraction or reuse. Identify the marketplace terms and the intended use before collecting. For Amazon UK, the cited terms specifically address data-mining and similar tools extracting substantial parts for reuse without express written consent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“I have an Associates account. Why can’t I call the API?”
Amazon’s listed requirements include a separate application for PA API access. Confirm that the account is open, the Operating Agreement is being followed, and API access has been applied for and granted. Then use the current API documentation and credentials for the relevant marketplace.
Best Value
“Can I use PA API results in my own general catalog?”
Do not assume so. The Associates license is limited and program-oriented. Check current provisions on display, caching, retention, extraction, and reuse for the precise planned feature; seek permission if the intended use is outside the license.
“Amazonbot follows my robots.txt. Does that settle my crawler’s access?”
No. Amazonbot documentation describes Amazon-operated crawlers visiting other sites. It does not grant a third party permission to access Amazon retail pages. Consult the applicable Amazon terms and any separate authorization instead.
“Can a screenshot API give me product fields?”
A screenshot API produces a rendered image or PDF, not a licensed structured product feed. It does not replace the PA API or change the permissions that apply to the page content. Use such a tool only for pages you are authorized to capture.

Frequently asked questions
Is scraping Amazon illegal everywhere?
The available Amazon UK terms do not establish a jurisdiction-wide legal conclusion. Contract terms, marketplace, purpose, and applicable law matter; consult qualified legal advice for a high-stakes project.
Does robots.txt tell me what I am legally allowed to scrape?
No. It is crawler guidance, not a complete statement of contractual permission or applicable law.
Does an affiliate relationship grant extra scraping rights?
No. Associates membership and PA API access are conditional and governed by separate program requirements and a limited license.
