Windows 11 does not provide an automatic Light/Dark mode schedule in the regular Settings app. The simplest supported solution is Microsoft PowerToys Light Switch, which can change themes at fixed times, at sunset and sunrise, or according to your existing Night light schedule.
Do not confuse Dark mode with Night light: Dark mode changes Windows and supported apps from light colors to dark colors, while Night light warms the display’s color temperature.
The quickest method: Microsoft PowerToys Light Switch
PowerToys Light Switch is a free, open-source Microsoft utility that adds automatic Light/Dark theme scheduling to Windows 11. It can target the Windows interface, supported apps, or both.
It supports three useful scheduling methods:
- Fixed hours: switch at times you choose.
- Sunset to Sunrise: follow local sunset and sunrise.
- Follow Night Light: use the schedule already configured for Windows Night light.

Install Microsoft PowerToys
The easiest graphical method is to install Microsoft PowerToys from the Microsoft Store, then open PowerToys Settings. You can also install it with WinGet:
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source wingetUse Microsoft’s official installation instructions or the Microsoft Store rather than an unofficial download site. PowerToys supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or newer on x64 and ARM64 processors.
Schedule Dark mode at fixed times
- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select Light Switch in the left sidebar.
- Turn on Enable Light Switch.
- Choose the fixed-hours or manual scheduling option shown in your installed version.
- Set the time for Turn on dark mode.
- Set the time for Turn on light mode.
- Choose whether to apply the change to System, Apps, or Both system and apps.
For example, you could set Dark mode for 7:00 p.m. and Light mode for 7:00 a.m. These are example times; choose a schedule that suits your routine.
Light Switch runs in the background and evaluates the schedule. If your installed version displays different labels, follow the labels in its Settings interface.
Switch themes automatically at sunset and sunrise
Choose Sunset to Sunrise in Light Switch when you want the schedule to adjust throughout the year. PowerToys calculates local sunrise and sunset times, rather than using the same fixed evening and morning times every day.

You can also add an offset—for example, switching to Dark mode 15 minutes before sunset. Location services must be enabled and synchronized. If automatic location data is unavailable, Light Switch can use coordinates that you enter manually.
If the schedule is inaccurate, check that Windows has the correct date, time, time zone, and location permissions.

Sync Dark mode with Night light
If you already use Night light, choose Follow Night Light in Light Switch. This lets the Dark mode schedule follow Night light’s existing hours or sunset-to-sunrise schedule.
To configure Night light in Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Night light.
- Turn on Schedule night light.
- Choose Sunset to sunrise or Set hours.
Night light alone will not switch Windows into Dark mode. It changes the display’s color temperature; Light Switch is what changes the Windows and app theme.

- System: Windows surfaces such as the Start menu and taskbar.
- Apps: applications that respond to Windows’ theme setting.
- Both system and apps: changes both where supported.
Not every application supports Windows Dark mode. Some apps have their own appearance setting, while older or noncompliant apps may remain light. If an app does not change, select Apps or Both system and apps, check the app’s own theme settings, and restart it if necessary.

PowerToys’ developer documentation lists Ctrl+Shift+Win+D as the default Light Switch shortcut. Treat the shortcut shown in your installed PowerToys Settings as authoritative because it can vary by version.
Using the shortcut manually overrides the current scheduled state until the next transition event. If the PC sleeps through a scheduled change, Microsoft’s developer documentation says Light Switch applies the correct setting at its next check. Unusual hibernation, crashes, or other power-state problems may require reopening PowerToys or checking the schedule.
Fix common problems
Light Switch is missing
Update PowerToys, reopen PowerToys Settings, and confirm that Light Switch appears in the sidebar and is enabled. PowerToys can check for updates while it is running.
Sunset scheduling does not work
Enable and synchronize Windows location services, or enter valid coordinates manually. Also verify the system clock, time zone, date, and Light Switch schedule mode.

Only part of Windows changes
Confirm that Light Switch targets System, Apps, or Both system and apps as intended. An app-specific theme setting can override Windows’ setting, and some apps do not support Dark mode.
I only see Night light in Settings
Night light is under Settings > System > Display. Dark mode is under Settings > Personalization > Colors. The native Colors page offers Light, Dark, and Custom, but not a time-based scheduler.

Auto Dark Mode is a third-party, open-source alternative for users who want more automation than Light Switch provides. Its features include fixed schedules, sunrise and sunset switching, ambient-light-sensor support, wallpaper and cursor changes, accent-color changes, keyboard shortcuts, custom scripts, and conditions such as avoiding changes while gaming.
It can be installed with:
winget install autodarkmodeThe official release page lists Auto Dark Mode 11.1.1, released August 16, 2026. Check its release notes and limitations before installing; it is not a Windows component or Microsoft product.
Choose Auto Dark Mode when you specifically need wallpaper, cursor, accent-color, scripting, or gaming controls. Choose PowerToys when you want the more straightforward Microsoft-maintained option.

Can you do this without installing an app?
Not through the normal Windows 11 Settings interface. Advanced users can create Task Scheduler jobs and registry-changing scripts, but those workarounds require maintenance and may fail to refresh every app. They can also be affected by permissions, user profiles, sleep, startup, and theme-refresh issues.
For most users, PowerToys Light Switch is safer and easier to maintain than building a custom registry automation.
