In standard American English, Alexa is pronounced uh-LEK-suh (/əˈlɛksə/), with the stress on the middle syllable. It is the same pronunciation used for Amazon’s voice assistant and its default wake word.

How to pronounce each syllable
Start with a short, unstressed uh. Emphasize LEK, which sounds roughly like the first part of “wreck.” The letter x makes a ks sound. Finish with a light suh; the final vowel is usually relaxed, not a strongly stressed “ah.”

Avoid giving all three syllables equal emphasis or putting the main stress on the first or last syllable.

Saying Alexa to an Echo
Amazon calls the word that starts a voice interaction a wake word. “Alexa” is the default wake word on supported devices. Say it clearly, then give your request, for example:
- “Alexa, set a timer for ten minutes.”
- “Alexa, play music.”
- “Alexa, what’s the weather?”
You do not need a special accent to say the name correctly. Pronunciation and recognition are different, though: a device may fail to detect a clear pronunciation because of noise, distance, microphone settings, language or device settings, or another voice nearby. Amazon describes wake-word invocation in its invocation guidance.

If Alexa does not respond
- Say uh-LEK-suh clearly, including the ks sound.
- Move closer and try again with less background noise.
- Check that the device’s microphone is enabled. If its microphone-off indicator is active, use the device’s controls to turn the microphone back on; indicators and controls vary by model.
- Confirm which wake word is selected for that device in the Alexa app.
- Try saying only the wake word and wait for the device’s response indicator before giving your request.
- If ordinary voice interaction still fails, restart the device or check its connection and model-specific support guidance.
These are checks, not a diagnosis: a recognition failure does not by itself mean you pronounced the name incorrectly.

On supported devices, Amazon’s general Alexa app path is Devices → select the Echo or Alexa-enabled device → Device Settings → Wake Word. Choose an option shown in the app and confirm. Menu labels and choices can vary by app version, device, language, or region. The change applies to the device you update, so repeat the steps for other devices if you want to change them too. Wake-word choices are predefined rather than a freely typed custom name in Amazon’s documented consumer settings. Amazon’s developer glossary lists Alexa, Amazon, Echo, and Computer. An Amazon consumer article also mentions Ziggy, so availability may differ; check the Wake Word menu on your own device rather than assuming every option is offered everywhere.
