What’s actually slowing this PC down?

In Safari on your Mac, Control-click the picture and choose Save Image to Downloads, Save Image As, or Add Image to Photos. Use Save Image As when you need a specific filename or folder. If Safari does not offer an image command, try Download Linked File or save the entire page as a Web Archive.
Choose the right saving method
The best method depends on whether you need one original image, a converted copy, or a record of the whole page.
| Goal | Safari method | What you get | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save one picture quickly | Control-click > Save Image to Downloads | An image file in Safari’s download location | Safari chooses the filename and folder |
| Choose a name or folder | Control-click > Save Image As | A downloaded image with your chosen destination | Requires an extra save dialog |
| Organize it in Apple’s library | Control-click > Add Image to Photos | An item in the Photos app | The command is not available for every image |
| Get a file exposed by a link | Control-click > Download Linked File | The resource targeted by the link | It may download an asset rather than the displayed image |
| Preserve the page | File > Save As > Web Archive | A page collection containing graphics and working links while destination pages remain available | It is not necessarily a standalone image file |
Save a picture in Safari
- Open the webpage in Safari on your Mac.
- Move the pointer over the picture you want.
- Hold the Control key and click the picture. This is the Mac equivalent of a right-click.
- Choose Save Image to Downloads for the fastest option. Safari saves the file using its configured download location.
- Choose Save Image As if you want to rename the file or select another folder.
- If the menu includes Add Image to Photos, choose it to place the image directly in Photos instead of managing a downloaded file yourself.
Some images, including certain background images, cannot be saved through these commands. A page can display an image as a CSS background or through another rendered element rather than as a directly downloadable image.
Drag an image instead
For some images, you can drag the picture directly to the desktop or into a document. This is convenient for a quick copy, but it may not give you control over the original filename or final format.

Where Safari saved the image
Safari normally sends downloads to the folder selected in its settings. To check or change it, open Safari > Settings, select General, and inspect File download location. Choose a different folder there if you want future downloads somewhere other than Downloads.
To locate a completed download, click Safari’s Downloads button. In the downloads list, click the magnifying-glass control beside the item; Safari reveals the file in Finder. You can then move, rename, or open it like any other Mac file.
When “Save Image” is missing
Try the linked resource
- Control-click the picture or the surrounding downloadable object.
- Choose Download Linked File if that command appears.
- Open Safari’s Downloads list to confirm completion.
- Use the magnifying-glass control to reveal the file in Finder.
This works when the page exposes a downloadable image link even if the visible presentation does not provide the normal image menu.
Check whether it is a background image
If the image is part of the page’s background styling, Safari may not expose it as an image object. The ordinary save command can therefore be absent even though you can see the artwork. Do not assume that a visible picture is automatically an available download.

Consider access restrictions
A login wall, a bot check, a temporary loading failure, or a site that deliberately prevents direct downloads can stop Safari from obtaining the asset. Follow the site’s terms rather than trying to bypass an access control.
Save the whole webpage instead of one picture
If your purpose is to preserve an article or reference page, use File > Save As in Safari. Select Web Archive to save the page’s graphics and keep links working while the destination pages remain available. Select Page Source when you only need the HTML source.
A Web Archive is a collection representing the page, not a guaranteed replacement for a separate JPG, PNG, or WebP file. Use the image-saving workflow when you need an individual asset that another app can open independently.
Understand file formats and conversion
Save Image As generally downloads the resource supplied by the website; it does not promise a conversion to a format you choose. A site may provide JPEG, PNG, WebP, or another type, and the extension should match the actual file.

If you specifically need a PNG, JPG, or WebP choice in Safari’s contextual menu, the Mac App Store listing for Save Image as Type describes a Safari extension that adds those options. The listing showed $2.99 when it was crawled, but price and availability can change. Review the current listing and the extension’s permissions before installing it.
Troubleshooting checklist
Nothing appears in Downloads
- Open Safari’s Downloads list and check whether the transfer is still in progress or failed.
- Confirm the File download location in Safari > Settings > General.
- Use the magnifying-glass control to reveal the actual file location.
- Check available disk space and whether macOS is allowing Safari to write to the selected folder.
The saved file will not open
- Check the filename extension and try opening the file in Preview.
- Download it again; an interrupted transfer can leave an incomplete file.
- If the website delivered a modern format, use an image editor or converter that supports that format rather than merely changing the extension.
The result is a thumbnail or low-resolution image
Many sites display a small preview that links to a larger asset. Use Download Linked File on the link, open the image in a new tab when available, or look for the site’s own full-size download control. Saving a thumbnail cannot recreate detail that was never delivered to your Mac.
The menu shows no image commands
- Control-click the image again, making sure the pointer is over the artwork rather than nearby text.
- Try dragging it to the desktop or a document.
- Try Download Linked File on the surrounding link.
- If it is a background element, use the site’s download feature or request permission from the owner instead of attempting to defeat the page’s design.
The image is in Photos but not in Finder
Add Image to Photos imports the item into the Photos library. It does not necessarily create a conveniently named file in your Downloads folder. Export a copy from Photos when you need a file for another application.
Privacy, copyright, and practical limits
Saving a file for personal reference does not automatically grant permission to publish, sell, or redistribute it. Check the website’s terms, the image’s license, and any copyright notice before using the picture in a presentation, product, social post, or commercial project. Attribution requirements and permitted uses vary by creator and license.

If you need repeatable screenshots rather than a one-off manual download, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow can accept cookie and consent banners before removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. A one-call cURL example is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The equivalent Python request is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
In Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. Options include full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save an image directly to an external drive?
Yes. Choose Save Image As and select the mounted drive or a folder on it in the save dialog.
Does saving an image remove a watermark?
No. Safari saves what the website delivers; it does not remove watermarks or alter ownership information.
Why is my saved image a different size from the one on screen?
The page may be displaying a resized preview, while the linked file is larger or smaller. Check the downloaded file’s dimensions in Finder or Preview.
