For a screenshot of the map as it appears in a browser, use CefSharp’s off-screen Chromium browser and save the bytes returned by CaptureScreenshotAsync. If you need a map image without rendering a browser page, request one from the Google Maps Static API instead. The right choice depends on whether you need the live page’s visible state or a map composed from API parameters.

Choose between a browser screenshot and the Static API

These approaches produce different kinds of images. A browser screenshot captures rendered pixels from a page; a Static API request asks Google for a map image described by parameters. A screenshot is usually the closer fit when the result must reflect the map viewport, overlays, or other state already displayed in the page. The Static API is the better fit when you want a browser-free request with explicit map dimensions and supported map options.

Requirement CefSharp browser screenshot Google Maps Static API
Match the current interactive viewport Strong fit: capture the rendered browser page. Weak fit: request a map image from parameters.
Preserve overlays or user state rendered in the page Strong fit, provided that state is visible when the capture runs. Only what the API parameters support.
Set image dimensions and map styling deterministically Possible by controlling the screenshot viewport. Strong fit through parameters such as size, scale, and style.
Avoid JavaScript and browser rendering No. Yes.
Credential and billing setup Depends on the page being loaded and the usage involved. Required for Google’s Static API.

Neither route makes Google Maps content unrestricted. Google’s Maps Platform rules govern what you may capture, store, display, or redistribute. Keep the Google logo and other supplied attribution visible and legible, and use a saved image only in ways allowed by the applicable terms. Do not bulk-download map tiles or turn map content into an external database.

Capture the rendered page with CefSharp

CefSharp’s off-screen browser can load a Google Maps page and capture the rendered page as PNG. Its API reference describes CaptureScreenshotAsync as “Capture page screenshot.” The method supports a format and an optional viewport. WaitForInitialLoadAsync waits for the initial page load; it is not a guarantee that every map tile or application-specific overlay is ready.

Minimal PNG capture

This example follows the CefSharp off-screen workflow. It opens a map centered on the supplied coordinates, requests a 1200-by-800 PNG capture, and writes the returned bytes to disk:

using CefSharp;
using CefSharp.OffScreen;
using System.IO;

using var browser = new ChromiumWebBrowser("https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7128,-74.0060,12z");
await browser.WaitForInitialLoadAsync();

// Add an application-specific readiness check here. Initial page load does not
// guarantee that every visible map tile or overlay has finished rendering.
byte[] png = await browser.CaptureScreenshotAsync(
    CefSharp.DevTools.Page.CaptureScreenshotFormat.Png,
    quality: 100,
    viewport: new CefSharp.DevTools.Page.Viewport
    {
        X = 0,
        Y = 0,
        Width = 1200,
        Height = 800,
        Scale = 1
    });

await File.WriteAllBytesAsync("map.png", png);

Use this as a method body in an application configured for CefSharp OffScreen and with an async-capable entry point or caller. The exact readiness event or helper depends on the CefSharp version and on how your application identifies the map and its visible tiles. There is no single universal “Google map is ready” event established here. If your capture runs too early, the PNG can reflect an incomplete page even though the initial load task has completed.

Control the capture area and format

  • Viewport: The supplied Viewport sets the capture rectangle and dimensions. Adjust Width, Height, and Scale for your output requirements; the captured image corresponds to the rendered browser, not an unlimited map export.
  • Format: The example explicitly selects PNG. The CefSharp reference confirms format selection and optional viewport support. Choose a format supported by the CefSharp version used by your project; do not assume a quality argument has the same effect for every image format.
  • Visible state: Pan, zoom, open overlays, or add application state before capture if those details need to appear. The screenshot records what is rendered at the time the method runs.
  • Output path: The example writes to the process’s current working directory. Use an explicit, writable path in a desktop application or service, and handle file-system errors in production code.

Request a map image directly with Google Maps Static API

The Static API returns an image—GIF, PNG, or JPEG—in response to an HTTP request via a URL. This avoids launching a browser, but it does not capture the interactive Google Maps page. Instead, specify a center, zoom, dimensions, map type, and any supported markers, paths, or styling. Google documents a maximum request URL length of 16,384 characters.

Build the request URL

A request has this general form; encode parameter values when constructing it in code:

https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=40.7128%2C-74.0060&zoom=12&size=800x600&maptype=roadmap&markers=color%3Ared%7C40.7128%2C-74.0060&format=png&key=YOUR_API_KEY&signature=YOUR_SIGNATURE

Enable the Maps Static API in the project, configure billing, and authenticate the request. The example includes both a key and a signature; supply valid credentials for your configuration rather than copying these labels literally. Keep the complete encoded URL within Google’s documented character limit.

Download the image in C#

This .NET example accepts a fully formed Static API URL, downloads its response, checks the HTTP status, and saves the response bytes. Construct and encode the query parameters—including authentication—before calling it:

    await File.WriteAllBytesAsync(outputPath, imageBytes);
}

// Call with the complete, encoded Static API URL and a writable output path.
await SaveMapImageAsync(requestUrl, "map.png");

The request URL determines the response format. Use a matching file extension such as .png when requesting PNG. A successful HTTP transfer alone should not be treated as proof that the returned content is the intended map; inspect the response if your application must distinguish image output from an API error response.

When to prefer this route

  • Choose it when the program needs a map image from explicit coordinates and supported map parameters, rather than a screenshot of a loaded page.
  • Use it when you need to avoid JavaScript and browser rendering.
  • Prefer browser capture when the output must include rendered page state that cannot be expressed through Static API parameters.

Keep attribution and usage within Google Maps rules

Google’s Maps JavaScript policy says results must be displayed on Google Maps and that attribution must remain clear, legible, unmodified, and correctly positioned. The Maps Platform Terms prohibit exporting, extracting, scraping, pre-fetching, indexing, storing, resharing, or rehosting Google Maps Content outside the Services, and require supplied attribution to remain visible. Google API terms also restrict copying, modifying, distributing, publicly displaying, or removing proprietary notices unless expressly permitted.

  • Do not crop, cover, or edit out the Google logo or other supplied attribution.
  • Do not treat a captured image as permission to host or redistribute map content in a way the applicable terms prohibit.
  • Do not use browser automation to bulk-download tiles or build an external map-content database.
  • Check the current terms that apply to your Maps Platform use case before saving or displaying images beyond your immediate application workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a page from a URL rather than implement the CefSharp workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API with an MCP server. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The following cURL command requests a screenshot of the same map page used in the CefSharp example. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for API details and options.

Troubleshoot incomplete or unusable captures

The screenshot is blank or missing some map tiles

WaitForInitialLoadAsync only covers the initial page-load wait in this workflow; it does not establish that all map tiles have rendered. Add a readiness check appropriate to your application and capture only after the map region and the content you need are visible. Avoid treating an arbitrary delay as a guaranteed readiness signal.

The screenshot has the wrong dimensions or area

Check the capture Viewport values and the browser’s rendered layout. The sample asks for a 1200-by-800 viewport, while the Static API example requests size=800x600; these are separate settings for separate workflows. For a browser capture, adjust the viewport. For a Static API image, adjust the API parameters.

The Static API request fails

Confirm that the Maps Static API is enabled, billing is configured, and the request is authenticated. Check that query values are encoded and that the full URL does not exceed 16,384 characters. If the transfer succeeds but the result is not the expected image, inspect the response rather than assuming every successful HTTP response contains a usable map.

The saved image is missing attribution

Do not hide or crop out the logo or other supplied attribution. Rework the capture area or layout so that the required attribution stays visible, legible, unmodified, and correctly positioned under the applicable policy.

A CefSharp example does not compile in your project

Verify that your project references the CefSharp OffScreen package and that the code matches the CefSharp version and target framework you use. The exact readiness helper is application- and version-specific; the capture workflow shown here does not promise a version-independent map-ready event.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

The browser route must load and render a web page before it can capture pixels. Its completion time and resource use depend on the page and environment; no comparative speed, memory, or image-quality benchmark is established here. A readiness check can reduce premature captures, but it should observe the actual content your application needs rather than assume that initial navigation completion equals map completion.

The Static API removes the browser-rendering step and returns an image response for the requested parameters. It is still a Google developer service: project setup, billing, and authentication are required. The available information does not establish a price per request, so check the applicable Maps Platform billing details for your project instead of assuming the image request is free.

For either route, decide what the saved file is for before choosing an implementation. If it is a transient capture for a permitted workflow, save only what your application needs and preserve attribution. If it is intended for long-term storage, public display, redistribution, or reuse outside Google’s services, first verify that the use is allowed by the applicable Maps Platform terms.
