You can save game progress to iCloud only if the game supports an iCloud or other cloud-save feature. For supported games, turn on the game’s iCloud access on each device and use the same Apple Account; syncing usually happens automatically, with no universal “upload save” button. Check the game’s own account or cloud-save settings too.
Check whether the game supports cloud saves
First, look in the game’s settings for options such as Cloud Save, Sync, Account or Restore Progress. Check the developer’s support page if the option is not obvious. The game must implement a compatible service; enabling iCloud cannot add cloud saving to a game that does not support it. Apple notes that supported third-party app data can include game progress, but availability depends on the app (Apple’s guide to third-party app data in iCloud).
If the game appears in your iCloud app list, that is a useful place to enable its access. If it does not appear, the game may not use iCloud app syncing, may rely on its own publisher account, or may use another Apple service without a separate app switch.
Turn on iCloud for the game
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap your name, then tap iCloud.
- Tap See All or Show All beside the apps using iCloud.
- Turn on the switch for the game, if it is listed.
Use the same Apple Account on every device where you want the progress to appear. The menu wording can vary by iOS or iPadOS version, device and region. Apple’s instructions for setting up iCloud with third-party apps note that some apps also require iCloud Drive.

If the game requires iCloud Drive
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, tap Drive or iCloud Drive, and turn on Sync this iPhone or the comparable device-specific switch. Then return to the iCloud app list and enable the game if it appears there. See Apple’s iCloud Drive setup guide for iPhone.
You do not generally need to find or create a game folder in the Files app. Some apps expose iCloud Drive documents there, but a visible folder is not a universal sign of whether a game can sync its save.
Move progress to another iPhone or iPad
- On the old device, open the game and confirm that the progress you want is present.
- Check that the game’s iCloud switch or its own cloud-save setting is enabled. If it uses a publisher account, confirm that you know which account and profile holds the save.
- Connect the old device to the internet and give the game time to sync. If you played offline, your newest progress may still be local.
- On the new device, sign in to the same Apple Account, install the same game, enable its iCloud access and sign in to the same game account if needed.
- Open the game online and follow any restore or sync prompt. Confirm that the expected progress appears before erasing, trading in or uninstalling the old device.
For a cautious test, make a small, identifiable change on the old device, close the game normally, wait while connected, and check whether that change appears on the new device. If the game presents a choice between saves, do not start a new game or overwrite either save until you know which one contains the progress you want.

iCloud syncing, iCloud Backup and Game Center are different

Apple describes iCloud as supporting both app-data syncing and device backups, which serve different purposes (iCloud Support). Apple’s GameSave framework, introduced for developers in WWDC25, can support cloud saves and conflict-handling interfaces, but the experience depends on whether a particular game implements it (Apple Developer: Level up your games).

If your progress is missing
- Compare Apple Accounts. Check that both devices use the same Apple Account for iCloud. App purchase sharing through Family Sharing does not guarantee shared save data.
- Check the game account. Sign in to the same publisher account or game profile used on the device with the progress.
- Check the iCloud switch. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All/Show All and check the game, if listed.
- Check iCloud Drive. Turn it on if the game requires it.
- Reconnect and wait. Use a reliable internet connection and open the game; progress played offline may not have uploaded yet.
- Update the game and operating system. Menu names and sync behavior can change between versions.
- Look for restore controls or a conflict prompt. Check the game’s settings and read any choices carefully. If saves conflict, stop playing on the other devices until you know which version is safest to keep.
- Preserve the old copy. Do not delete the game, erase the old device or sign out of accounts while it may still contain the only copy of the save.
- Check Apple’s service status and iCloud guidance. Apple recommends checking connectivity, account use, System Status and software updates when iCloud does not work (Apple’s iCloud troubleshooting guide).
If the game is missing from iCloud settings, that does not prove the progress is unrecoverable: it may use a publisher account or another service. Check the game’s documentation rather than creating a folder in iCloud Drive or relying on iCloud Backup as a live save.
Handle save conflicts carefully
If the game asks whether to use a local or cloud save, or to replace one with the other, do not choose Overwrite, Replace or Use This Device without checking which version has the progress you want. Stop playing on other devices, keep the device with the valuable save intact, and contact the developer if the prompt is unclear. Conflict-resolution screens are game-specific; not every title offers the same recovery options.

When to contact the game developer
Contact the game’s support team if you cannot find a restore option, the wrong progress keeps appearing, or a conflict prompt is unclear. Include the game title and version, device models and operating-system versions, the approximate last date the progress was visible, whether the old device still has it, and the game’s player ID or account details. Screenshots of relevant game settings can help. Never send your Apple Account password.
Cloud saves may also be platform-specific: an iCloud save between Apple devices is not necessarily transferable to Android, Windows or a console. And if a game relies on the developer’s servers, its save service can be affected by changes or closure of that service. More iCloud storage cannot add cloud-save support to an unsupported game.
