To save one web page as HTML, open it in your browser, choose Save Page As, and select an HTML-only or complete-page format. HTML-only gives you the document but usually not its pictures or other resources; a complete save adds a companion folder of files. For one portable archive, use a browser or tool that offers a single-file format. To browse many linked pages offline, make a site mirror instead—saving one page does not back up an entire website.
Choose the kind of copy you need
Before saving, decide whether you need the page’s markup, its appearance, a portable file, or a collection of pages. Those goals produce different results.

Mozilla Support’s “How to save a web page,” last updated August 11, 2023, describes Firefox’s HTML-only and complete-page choices. Microsoft Learn’s WebView2 save-kind documentation, last updated August 3, 2026, distinguishes HtmlOnly, SingleFile, and Complete in that API. These labels are not guaranteed to appear identically in every browser.
Save one page from a browser
Firefox: HTML-only or complete page
- Open the page you want to keep.
- Open the browser menu and choose Save Page As.
- Choose a filename and destination folder.
- Choose Web page, HTML only if you need the document by itself, or Web page, complete if you want associated pictures and other files too.
- Save the page. If you chose the complete option, keep the HTML file and its companion directory together when moving or sharing the saved copy.
Mozilla says the complete option stores the page with pictures and other files, so it can be viewed with those pictures; it may not preserve the original HTML link structure. HTML-only saves the original page without pictures and preserves the original HTML link structure in one file. The separate Text files choice saves text rather than HTML. Mozilla’s instructions were last updated in 2023, so menu names or placement can differ in later Firefox versions.

What “single file” means
A single-file archive is useful when keeping a page and its resources together matters more than keeping a plain HTML document. Microsoft’s WebView2 API defines SingleFile as saving an HTML document in MHTML format. Its HtmlOnly kind saves the top-level document without subresources; Complete saves HTML and related files such as CSS, JavaScript, and images in a directory sharing the filename prefix. These are WebView2 API options, not instructions for finding an identically named command in every consumer browser.
Check the resulting file extension and format before relying on it: an archive such as MHTML is not interchangeable with a standalone .html file in every app. If you specifically need editable markup or want to inspect the document structure, choose HTML-only or complete HTML rather than assuming a single-file archive is plain HTML.
Save a whole site for offline browsing
A browser’s Save Page As command targets the page currently open. For a set of linked pages, HTTrack can mirror a starting site, follow links within configured scope, and rewrite saved links so the local pages can be browsed together. Its documentation says the default crawl stays on the starting host; depth, host or domain scope, and filters can change what it follows. The default behavior also obeys robots.txt. Use the logs to see URLs that were refused, redirected, or filtered when expected pages are absent.

- Choose a starting page or site and decide which pages you need offline.
- Use HTTrack’s scope, depth, and filter controls to limit the mirror to the relevant pages and hosts. A broad scope can fetch more than intended; a narrow one can leave links out.
- Run the mirror and inspect its logs for refused, redirected, or filtered URLs.
- Open the saved local pages and follow their rewritten links to check whether the sections you need are present.
- Keep the local directory structure intact. The mirror is a collection of files, not a server-side copy of the original website.
HTTrack’s guide and command-line documentation were reviewed September 29, 2026; the documentation pages do not state a publication date. Its link discovery parses HTML and CSS but does not execute JavaScript. A link or asset URL assembled only after a script runs may therefore be missed. For large crawls, tune scope and filters rather than assuming that starting from a homepage will capture every page.
HTTrack’s one-file conversion
After a crawl, HTTrack can convert saved pages into single HTML files by embedding stylesheets, scripts, images, and fonts as data URIs. The guide documents a default limit of 10 MB per asset. Assets exceeding that limit, audio, video, and links between pages remain linked rather than embedded. The result can make an individual page easier to move, but it does not turn the multi-page mirror into one self-contained file.
What may be missing or behave differently offline
- Pictures and styling: HTML-only saves omit subresources. Use a complete save or an archive option when those files matter, and keep any companion folder with the HTML file.
- JavaScript-generated content: a crawler that does not run JavaScript may not discover content or resource addresses created at runtime. A static downloaded copy can also miss content that appears only after scripts run.
- Audio and video: HTTrack’s single-file conversion does not embed these media types; they remain linked.
- Login- or form-dependent pages: HTTrack documents cookie support and login-related mechanisms, but a public crawl should not be assumed to reproduce an authenticated session, submitted form state, or interactive workflow. Session information may be needed.
- Remote services and live behavior: downloaded files do not recreate a site’s server-side database or services. Treat the result as a snapshot of fetched resources, not a functional clone.
For offline reading, check the saved copy without relying on an active internet connection. If it looks incomplete, first identify whether the missing item is a local resource that was not saved, dynamically generated content, or a remote service the original page depends on. A different packaging option can help with missing files, but it cannot reproduce server logic or content that was never fetched.

Troubleshoot common save problems
The saved HTML opens without images or styling
You likely saved HTML-only, or moved the HTML away from its companion resource directory. Save again using the complete-page option if available, then keep the HTML and related folder together. If you need a single package, use a supported archive format and confirm that your target app can open it.

Review HTTrack’s logs for refused, redirected, or filtered URLs. Check the crawl’s depth, host or domain scope, and filters; adjust them only as far as needed. The crawler’s default behavior obeys robots.txt, so a refused page may not be retrievable through the default crawl.
A page looks different from the live version
Check whether the difference comes from JavaScript-generated content, a remote service, or an asset the save did not include. HTTrack does not run JavaScript to discover links. A downloaded snapshot cannot be expected to preserve content that depends on a live server-side database or service.

A single-file page still has linked resources
For HTTrack conversion, verify whether an asset exceeds the documented 10 MB default per-asset embedding limit or is audio or video; those remain linked. Also, links between pages remain links because an individual converted page is not the entire mirrored site in one file.
The downloaded page does not preserve a login or form state
Do not assume a crawler’s public-site mirror contains your authenticated state. HTTrack documents cookie and login-related mechanisms, but the appropriate session information may need to be supplied. Even then, a saved file is not a replacement for the site’s live application behavior.
When a screenshot is the better deliverable
