To save what you can see on a webpage as an image on a Mac, press Shift-Command-4, drag over the page area, then release. macOS saves the screenshot to your default screenshot location—normally the desktop. To capture an entire scrolling page rather than just the visible portion, use a Safari extension or a webpage capture service; the built-in screenshot shortcuts do not automatically produce a full-page PNG.
Choose the right kind of capture
“Save a webpage as an image” can mean several different things: a picture of the visible page, a picture of the whole browser window, a full-length image that includes content below the fold, or the original image file embedded on the page. Choose based on what you need to keep.

Capture part of a webpage with a Mac shortcut
- Open the webpage in Safari and bring the portion you want to capture into view.
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag to select the webpage area. Include or exclude the browser toolbar and tabs according to whether you want them in the image.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button. The screenshot is saved to the current screenshot location.
This makes an image of the pixels in the selected region, not a copy of the page’s underlying HTML. It is useful for a chart, an error message, a short article excerpt, or a visual record of a page as it appeared at that moment. Text in the resulting screenshot is not automatically selectable as text.
Capture the Safari window instead
Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer becomes a camera. Move it over the Safari window and click. This captures the window as a unit, rather than requiring you to trace its edges. It may include browser interface around the webpage. Some apps block window captures; Apple notes that an app such as Apple TV may not allow one.

Capture the whole screen
Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the screen. Use this when the page is only part of a larger view you need to document, or when a window-selection capture is unavailable. It will include everything visible on that screen, not just Safari, so check for private information or other windows before sharing the file.
Use Screenshot controls for a timer and save options
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the macOS Screenshot controls. The controls provide screen, window, and selected-area capture modes, as well as options such as a timer and save location. They are useful if you need a delay to open a menu or arrange a page before capture, or if you do not want new screenshots saved to the desktop. The available labels and format behavior can vary by macOS release.
Apple’s current documentation notes PNG as the compatible SDR format and HEIF for HDR on supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. If a particular file type or color mode matters, check the Screenshot options and verify the saved file before using it in a workflow. Do not assume that every Mac and macOS version presents identical format choices.
Capture an entire scrolling page
A selected-area or window screenshot only captures content that is visible when the capture is made. Scrolling and taking several screenshots can document a long page, but it leaves you with separate images that may not align cleanly. For one long image, use a tool designed for full-page capture.

Safari extension
The Mac App Store listing for FullPage Screenshot for Safari advertises full-page and visible-area capture with PNG and PDF export. The full-page option is the relevant one when you need content below the current viewport; visible-area capture is closer to the built-in shortcut. Check the extension’s current listing and permissions before installing, since features and availability can change.
Full-page capture may need to load content that appears only as you scroll, such as lazy-loaded images. A dynamic page can also change while it is being captured. Review the exported file from top to bottom, especially when exact completeness matters. If the extension cannot capture an element or page state, try the site’s print view or another capture approach rather than treating a partial image as a complete record.
When a PDF is better than a PNG
For a long page intended for reading, printing, or archiving, a PDF can be easier to navigate and distribute than a very tall PNG. For a visual asset that will be placed in a presentation or image editor, PNG may be more convenient. The extension listing advertises both types; the built-in shortcuts are screenshot tools rather than a dedicated full-page webpage export.

Save the original image instead of a screenshot
If you want a photo or graphic itself, rather than a picture of the webpage around it, Control-click the image in Safari. Choose the available command, such as Save Image to Downloads, Save Image As, or Add Image to Photos. The exact choices can vary with the image and macOS version.
This saves the image element as a file; it does not preserve its position, caption, surrounding text, or appearance within the page. Some webpage background images cannot be saved directly this way. If there is no image-specific save command, capture the visible page or use a webpage capture tool instead.
Save a webpage for offline reference
Safari’s File > Save As is for preserving webpage content, not exporting a screenshot. Choose Web Archive to save a webpage with its graphics and links; links work while their destinations remain available. Choose Page Source to save the HTML source only. Neither choice is a PNG screenshot, and a saved archive of a dynamic page may render differently from the live page.

Use a screenshot when the exact visible appearance matters. Use a Web Archive when you want a page file for later reference and a still image would not preserve enough context. If your goal is simply to extract an image, use the image’s own save command where available.

Check the screenshot before sharing or relying on it
- Confirm the crop. Make sure the selected area includes the content you intended and excludes browser controls, notifications, or unrelated windows.
- Check long captures from top to bottom. Look for missing sections, repeated sections, cut-off images, or content that had not finished loading.
- Match the format to the next step. PNG is a common choice for screenshot sharing and editing; a full-page PDF may be easier to read or print. Format availability depends on the capture method and macOS version.
- Protect sensitive details. A screenshot is a flat visual record and may expose account details, open tabs, or personal information that is visible on screen.
- Keep the capture in context. A screenshot does not itself preserve working links or prove that a page has remained unchanged since capture. For reference, retain the source URL and capture date separately.
Troubleshooting Mac webpage captures
The screenshot includes too much of the screen
Use Shift-Command-4 and drag a tighter selection, or use Shift-Command-4 followed by Space to capture a window. Shift-Command-3 captures the whole screen by design.
The page is cut off below the visible area
That is expected from the built-in selected-area and window shortcuts: they capture the screen’s current visible content, not the page’s full scroll length. Use a full-page Safari extension or a capture service for a single long output.
A window capture does not work
Some apps prevent window capture. Try a selected-area screenshot instead, if the content is visible and the app permits it, or use the app’s own export option where available.

A page may not expose an image as a directly savable image element, and Apple notes that some background images cannot be saved directly. If you need how it looks on the page, use a screenshot. If you need the original asset, look for the site’s own download option.

The saved webpage looks different from Safari
A Web Archive is a webpage file, not a frozen screenshot. Dynamic content can render differently when saved, and linked destinations may no longer be available later. For a visual record of the current display, capture an image instead.
You cannot find the screenshot file or change where it goes
Open the Screenshot controls with Shift-Command-5 and inspect the save-location options. Screenshot destination settings and menu wording can vary by macOS release; the desktop is the default location described for the standard shortcut workflow.
Which method should you use?
For a quick image of what is visible in Safari, use Shift-Command-4 and select the page area. Use Shift-Command-5 when you need a timer or want to choose a save location, and use a full-page capture extension when the output must include the whole scrolling page. Save an image element directly when you need the original graphic, or choose File > Save As > Web Archive when keeping a webpage file matters more than getting a screenshot.
