Use Chrome DevTools’ Device Mode. Open the page, open DevTools, turn on the device toolbar, select More options, then choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image of the complete page, including content below the visible viewport. For only the visible area, choose Capture screenshot instead.

Choose the result you actually need

Chrome offers two built-in screenshot commands. Both are in the Device Mode toolbar’s More options menu, but they produce different results.

Goal Chrome command What it captures
Save the whole webpage as one image Capture a full size screenshot The page from top to bottom, including content outside the current viewport
Save only what is visible now Capture screenshot The current viewport shown in the browser
Preserve the page and its resources for later browsing Save as MHTML through an extension using Chrome’s pageCapture API An archive, not an image

Use the first command for documentation, design reviews, bug reports and receipts that span an entire page. Use the viewport command when you need a precise picture of the current browser view.

Save an entire webpage as an image in Chrome

  1. Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to save. Wait for the content you need to appear. If the page loads sections only after scrolling, note that behavior before capturing.
  2. Open DevTools. You can use Chrome’s developer-tools shortcut or open the browser menu and choose the developer-tools entry. DevTools normally docks beside or below the page.
  3. Enable Device Mode. In DevTools, click the Toggle device toolbar button. The page will appear inside a device-style viewport with controls for dimensions, orientation and scale.
  4. Open More options. On the Device Mode toolbar, open More options. This menu contains the screenshot commands.
  5. Capture the full page. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome captures the complete page, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport.
  6. Check the downloaded image. Open the resulting file and inspect the top, bottom and any interactive sections you expected to include. Chrome’s exact filename, format and download location can vary by operating system and browser version, so do not rely on a particular extension or folder.

Capture only the visible viewport

Follow the same steps, but select Capture screenshot rather than the full-size command. This is useful when you have positioned a chart, dialog, menu or responsive layout exactly as you want it. The command captures what is currently visible in the Device Mode viewport, not the entire document.

Set the viewport before capturing

Device Mode lets you choose a device preset or enter custom dimensions. Set the width and height before opening More options. A wider viewport can change responsive layouts, navigation and text wrapping; a narrow one may reveal a mobile menu instead of a desktop header. If the image is for a design handoff, record the selected dimensions so another person can reproduce the view.

Make full-page captures more reliable

Wait for lazy-loaded content

Some sites load images or cards only as they approach the viewport. A full-size capture may therefore contain placeholders if the page has not triggered those requests. Scroll through the page once, wait for images to finish, and then run the capture again. This is especially important for feeds, galleries and long product listings.

Handle fixed headers and overlays

Sticky navigation bars, cookie notices, newsletter prompts and chat bubbles can cover content in a stitched image. Dismiss legitimate notices before capturing. If an overlay cannot be closed, try the site’s own settings or capture the relevant section with the viewport command. Do not remove or alter page content you do not have permission to modify.

Check dynamic or interactive pages

Animations, carousels, auto-refreshing dashboards and video frames can produce a result that changes from one capture to the next. Pause animation where the page allows it, wait for the desired frame, and avoid refreshing between the final check and capture.

Know the limits of very long pages

A full-size screenshot can be extremely tall. Large images may be difficult to open or share, and some pages use canvases or virtual scrolling that do not contain every item in the document at once. Capture important sections separately when a single image is unwieldy, and retain the original URL and capture time alongside the files.

Screenshot versus saving the webpage

A screenshot is a raster image of how the page renders at a particular viewport and time. It is convenient for sharing, but links, forms and scripts are no longer interactive. Chrome’s pageCapture API, available from Chrome 116, saves a tab as MHTML when an extension has the pageCapture permission. MHTML packages the page and its resources into one archive; it is not a PNG, JPEG or WebP screenshot.

Choose MHTML when your priority is preserving page content and resources for later inspection. Choose a screenshot when the recipient needs a picture for a report, ticket, presentation or visual comparison.

Optional extensions

You do not need an extension for Chrome’s built-in full-size command. Extensions can be useful when you want a toolbar button, annotations or export choices, but their permissions, features and version details can change.

That privacy statement is the vendor’s listing claim, not an independent audit. Review the current store listing and requested permissions before installing any extension.

Troubleshooting Chrome screenshots

The full-size option is missing

  • Confirm that DevTools is open and the Device Mode toolbar is enabled; the command is not in the normal page context menu.
  • Open the Device Mode toolbar’s More options menu rather than DevTools’ other menus.
  • Reload the page, enable Device Mode again and check whether the page is being displayed inside an embedded frame or restricted browser context.

The image stops before the bottom

  • Scroll through the page to trigger lazy-loaded sections, wait for network activity to settle, and capture again.
  • Check whether the site uses virtual scrolling. In that design, older items may be removed from the document as you scroll, so one full-size capture cannot contain the entire feed.
  • Capture separate sections with the viewport command if the page intentionally renders content in stages.

Images or fonts are missing

  • Wait for the page to finish loading before opening the screenshot menu.
  • Check your connection and reload once. A blocked third-party resource, authentication timeout or content-security policy can prevent an asset from rendering.
  • If the page requires a login, make sure the correct account and session are active before capturing.

A cookie banner, chat bubble or popup covers the page

Close the element using its own control, adjust the site’s privacy settings, or capture a smaller region after repositioning the viewport. Do not assume that an image editor can reconstruct text hidden underneath an overlay.

The result is blurry or the layout is wrong

Review the Device Mode width, height, orientation and scale. Responsive breakpoints can move content when the viewport changes. For high-detail work, use a larger viewport or a device setting with a higher pixel ratio, then verify that the resulting file remains practical to open and share.

The file is not where you expected

Chrome’s download behavior depends on your browser and operating-system settings. Check the download shelf or Chrome’s downloads page, and inspect the configured download folder instead of relying on a universal filename or path.

If you need repeatable captures in a script, build pipeline or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are also accepted to ease migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Cost and workflow considerations

  • Occasional manual capture: Chrome DevTools is built in and requires no service account.
  • Repeatable automation: An API avoids opening a browser for each URL and can return a predictable response for pipelines.
  • Unwanted page chrome: ScreenshotNeo’s consent, popup and chat-widget removal is useful when the image must show page content rather than overlays.
  • Failure handling: ScreenshotNeo distinguishes clean, failed and cache results in response headers, while a manual Chrome workflow requires you to inspect each file yourself.

For a single page, use Chrome’s full-size command. For scheduled, bulk or agent-driven work, an API can be easier to repeat and monitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Chrome save a full webpage as a JPG instead of another image format?

The documented DevTools procedure establishes the screenshot commands, but not a guaranteed format for every Chrome version and operating system. Check the downloaded file and convert it with an image editor if your workflow requires a specific format.

Does a full-page screenshot include content behind a collapsed accordion?

Only content rendered in the page is captured. Expand sections you need and trigger lazy-loaded content before using Capture a full size screenshot.
