A print-to-PDF file is a paginated document, so it may reflow text, split sections, or omit visual effects that appear in the browser. If preserving the page’s exact visual appearance matters more than selectable text, use a full-page screenshot instead.
Save a webpage as a PDF with images
- Wait for the page to finish loading. Scroll through long pages if the site loads images lazily as you move down.
- Open the browser’s print command. Common shortcuts are Ctrl+P on Windows and Command+P on macOS.
- Choose a PDF destination such as Save to PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Set paper size, orientation, scale, margins, page range, and color options for the result you need.
- Turn on Print backgrounds or Background graphics if the preview is missing decorative backgrounds.
- Inspect every page in the preview. Look for blank image boxes, clipped content, unexpected page breaks, and headers or footers you do not want.
- Click Save or Print, choose a filename and folder, and open the saved PDF to check it again.
The preview is important because a browser does not print the screen pixel-for-pixel. Websites can supply a separate print stylesheet, and the browser may paginate, resize, or rearrange content for paper.
Firefox desktop: Save to PDF
Procedure
- Open the page in Firefox and select the application menu, then Print.
- In the print preview, set Destination to Save to PDF.
- Choose the pages, orientation, color mode, paper size, scale, and margins. Adjust scale if a wide table or image is being cut off.
- Use Firefox’s option for printing backgrounds when the page’s artwork or colored sections are absent from the preview.
- Review headers and footers. Disable them if you want a cleaner document without the page title, URL, date, or page numbers.
- Select Print, pick a location, and save the PDF.
Firefox’s support documentation warns that a site can present itself differently on paper than on screen. A normal image placed in the document and a CSS background are separate cases: enabling background printing helps with backgrounds, but it is not a universal way to recover every missing image.
Microsoft Edge: include background graphics
Procedure
- Open the page in Edge.
- Choose Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Print. On Windows you can also press Ctrl+P; on macOS use Command+P.
- Select a PDF printer or Save to PDF as the printer or destination.
- Expand More settings.
- Enable Background graphics when colored panels, textures, or background artwork are missing. This control affects webpage backgrounds; it does not guarantee that every content image or dynamic widget will print.
- Set the paper size, layout, scale, margins, and pages. Check the preview before saving.
- Click Print, choose the filename and folder, and open the resulting file.
Edge’s documented workflow recommends enabling background graphics when the preview or output differs from the page. Labels and their location can change with the operating system and Edge release, so use the preview as the final authority.

Why images are missing in the PDF
Background artwork is disabled
Many sites draw colors, textures, hero art, and decorative panels with CSS backgrounds rather than ordinary image elements. Print dialogs commonly exclude these by default to save ink. Enable Print backgrounds in Firefox or Background graphics in Edge, then check the preview again.
The image has not loaded
Some pages defer image requests until an image is near the viewport. Wait for loading indicators to disappear and scroll through the entire page before opening Print. If an image remains blank in the normal browser view, printing cannot restore it.
The site supplies print-specific CSS
A page may intentionally hide navigation, advertisements, videos, or large artwork for paper. That is expected behavior, not necessarily a browser failure. If the print layout is unsuitable, a full-page image capture preserves more of the on-screen design.
Interactive or protected content cannot be reproduced
Live charts, videos, hover states, login-gated sections, bot checks, and content rendered only after interaction may not appear in a static PDF. Confirm that you are authorized to save the material and that it is visible before printing.

Images are clipped or split
Large images and wide tables can cross page boundaries. Try landscape orientation, a smaller scale, wider paper, or narrower margins. Do not reduce the scale so far that text becomes unreadable; a separate screenshot may be the better visual record.

Firefox’s full-page screenshot feature and Edge Screenshot are image workflows. They should not be presented as substitutes when the recipient specifically needs searchable, selectable PDF text.
Automate PDF creation with Chrome Headless
For repeatable captures, Chrome Headless can print a URL without opening a visible window. Run this from a shell with the Chrome executable available on your path:
google-chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.comOn systems where the executable is named differently, use chrome or the full path to the installed binary. The --no-pdf-header-footer option omits the print header and footer. Chrome’s reference notes that older builds used --print-to-pdf-no-header, so check the flags supported by your installed version if the command rejects the option.

Pages that load slowly or render content after navigation may need a wait:
google-chrome --headless --timeout=10000 --print-to-pdf=page.pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.comThe timeout is a maximum wait before capture commands run; it does not guarantee that every asynchronous request has completed. For a dynamic site, choose a value long enough for the page’s normal loading time and inspect the PDF afterward.
Practical quality checklist
- Images: Every expected image appears, is not stretched, and is not replaced by a blank box.
- Backgrounds: Required artwork is present after enabling the browser’s background option.
- Pagination: Headings are not stranded at the bottom of a page, and tables are not cut through critical rows.
- Readability: Text remains legible at 100% zoom; a low scale setting has not made it microscopic.
- Orientation: Wide content uses landscape or a suitable paper size.
- Metadata: Headers, footers, URL, date, and page numbers are either useful or disabled.
- Completeness: Lazy-loaded sections, consent dialogs, and interactive areas have been handled before printing.
- Final file: Open the saved PDF in a viewer rather than trusting only the browser’s preview.
Common problems and fixes
The PDF has text but no colored sections
Enable Print backgrounds in Firefox or Background graphics in Edge. If the color is still absent, the site may use a print stylesheet that removes it.
Only the visible portion of a long page was saved
Print-to-PDF should paginate the printable document, but a page that depends on scrolling or JavaScript may not expose all content to the print renderer. Scroll through the page first, wait for images, and use the print preview’s page count. For visual fidelity, use a full-page screenshot tool instead.

The first page is blank or an image is missing
Reload the page, wait for network activity to settle, and confirm the image appears in the normal view. Disable obstructive extensions temporarily if they prevent resources from loading. A failed request cannot be repaired by the PDF dialog.
The output has unwanted URLs and dates
Turn off headers and footers in the print settings. The exact control is browser- and operating-system-specific.
The automated PDF ends before the page is ready
Increase Chrome Headless’s --timeout, then verify that the site’s content is not gated behind a click, login, consent action, or infinite scroll. Automation waits cannot bypass content that never becomes available to the page.
A PDF is visually wrong but technically complete
That is a format choice, not necessarily an error. Use PDF when selectable document content matters; use a full-page image when the page’s screen layout is the thing you must preserve.

Will links in a printed PDF remain clickable?
Usually, browser-generated PDFs retain ordinary hyperlinks, but the exact result depends on the browser, page markup, and PDF viewer. Test a link in the saved file if interactivity matters.
Is MHTML better than PDF for archiving a page?
Neither is universally better. MHTML packages page resources for offline browser viewing, while PDF is more portable for reading, printing, and sharing. Choose based on the recipient and whether selectable document text is required.
