In Firefox, open the page, right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot, then select Save full page. To request a larger raster capture, open Firefox’s Web Console and run :screenshot --fullpage --dpr 2. A higher device-pixel ratio (DPR) can increase the image’s pixel dimensions, but it cannot restore detail that the page’s original images or other assets do not contain.
Choose what you need to capture
Before saving, decide whether you need the entire document, the portion currently on screen, a specific region, or one page element. These are different capture scopes, and a larger image is not automatically a more useful one. A full-page image may be very tall; a viewport image is usually easier to share when the relevant content is already visible.
- Whole page: Use this to keep a long page together in one image.
- Visible area: Use this for the current browser view, without content farther down the page.
- Region: Use this when only a chosen part of the screen matters.
- Page element: Use this to capture a particular element rather than the entire page.
Firefox’s built-in screenshot flow supports full-page and visible-area capture, as well as selecting a region or an automatically highlighted page element. Firefox Developer Tools also provides a way to capture an inspected element using Screenshot Node.
Save a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Mozilla documents a built-in screenshot flow that saves an image as a PNG. The page should be open and loaded in Firefox before you start. The menu labels below follow Mozilla’s documented instructions; browser interfaces can change over time.

- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty part of the page. Mozilla also documents
Ctrl+Shift+Son Windows and Linux, orCommand+Shift+Son macOS, as a way to open the screenshot tool. - Choose Take Screenshot.
- Select Save full page to capture the whole document, or Save visible to capture only what is currently on screen.
- Download the resulting PNG image.
If you need only a section, use the screenshot tool’s region selection. If you want one element, use the automatically highlighted element option or inspect it in Developer Tools and use Screenshot Node. Pick the capture scope deliberately: a full-page capture includes content outside the current viewport, while a region or element capture keeps the output focused.
Request a larger capture with Firefox’s Web Console
For a screenshot with a larger raster scale, Firefox’s Web Console screenshot helper accepts a device-pixel-ratio option. Mozilla documents --fullpage for the whole webpage and --dpr for specifying the device pixel ratio.
- Open the webpage you want to capture in Firefox.
- Open the Web Console in Developer Tools.
- Enter
:screenshot --fullpage --dpr 2and run it. - Open the saved image and inspect its pixel dimensions before using it.
The example requests a DPR of 2 for a full-page screenshot. Mozilla describes values above 1 as producing “zoomed-in” images and values below 1 as producing “zoomed-out” images. A larger DPR can produce substantially more pixels, particularly on a long page, and therefore a larger file. The documentation does not promise a fixed maximum image size or output dimensions; check the actual file rather than assuming a particular resolution.
The screenshot helper also supports a delay, a filename, a selector and forcing file output. Its exact syntax and available options should be checked in Mozilla’s current Firefox Source Docs rather than guessed from the basic example. If the screenshot icon is missing from Developer Tools, Mozilla notes that it may need to be enabled in the toolbox settings.
What “high resolution” actually means
Resolution can refer to the number of pixels in the saved file, the density at which the browser renders those pixels, or how much real detail the page’s assets contain. Increasing DPR changes the requested capture scale; it does not manufacture fine detail that was absent from the original page.

A webpage may serve different image resources for different pixel ratios. Apple’s responsive-design documentation describes this kind of device-pixel-ratio context, and MDN’s screenPixelRatio documentation describes screen capture at logical or device-independent resolution. In practical terms, inspect both the saved image and the source content: a larger screenshot of a small, soft image is still a larger screenshot of a small, soft image.
- For readable text, check the actual image at the size at which it will be viewed or printed.
- For an image-heavy page, remember that the website may be displaying a lower-resolution asset even if the screenshot dimensions are large.
- For a very long page, consider the trade-off between a single tall file and a more manageable capture of only the relevant region.
If your main goal is legible text at arbitrary zoom or printing, a PDF may be worth investigating, but it is a different output format—not an equivalent high-resolution screenshot. It may not preserve the page’s on-screen appearance, and there is no universal guarantee that it will suit a particular page or workflow.
What the documented browser options do—and do not—establish
Firefox is the clearest built-in route in the browser documentation cited here: it has a consumer-facing full-page image flow and a Web Console option for requesting a DPR. The available documentation does not establish the same precise full-page image-export steps for every browser.
Recommended Free Tools
- Chrome: The cited
pageCaptureextension API saves a tab as MHTML. MHTML is an archive format, not a raster screenshot, so it should not be mistaken for a PNG export. The cited official material does not verify a specific Chrome DevTools sequence for saving a full-page image. - Safari: Apple’s cited material covers Responsive Design Mode, viewport behavior and pixel-ratio context, but does not confirm a full-page image-export workflow. No exact Safari menu path is given here.
- Chrome extension option: The Chrome Web Store listing for GoFullPage describes it as a full-page capture extension. Its listing showed a changelog entry dated 2026-09-24; check the current listing for compatibility and feature details before relying on it.
These distinctions matter when choosing a tool. Compare capture scope, control over pixel ratio, output format and the detail available in the page’s source assets. A saved webpage archive, a PDF and a raster screenshot are not interchangeable outputs.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot contains only the visible screen
In Firefox’s built-in screenshot flow, choose Save full page, not Save visible. If you use the Web Console example, make sure the command includes --fullpage.

The file has more pixels but still looks blurry
A higher DPR changes capture scale; it cannot restore detail missing from an original image or other page asset. Check whether the page itself displays a suitable higher-resolution resource, and judge the saved image at its intended display size.
The full-page file is unexpectedly large or unwieldy
A long document captured at a larger DPR can create a substantially larger raster image. Try the ordinary full-page capture first, or capture only a region or element if that contains everything you need. The reviewed documentation does not specify a universal size limit or guaranteed output dimensions.

You cannot find the screenshot button in Developer Tools
Mozilla notes that the screenshot icon may need to be enabled in toolbox settings. The Web Console command is another documented route; verify the current Firefox Source Docs for the precise Developer Tools controls and command options.
You expected an image from Chrome’s pageCapture API
The cited Chrome pageCapture API saves MHTML, which is an archive rather than a PNG or other raster image. Use a screenshot workflow or a suitable extension when the required output is an image; verify any extension’s current compatibility in its store listing.
You need Safari instructions
The Apple source cited here does not confirm the steps for exporting a full-page image. Do not assume that Responsive Design Mode itself is a full-page screenshot export; consult current Safari documentation for the exact workflow you need.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a repeatable capture from code rather than a manual browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request with a URL can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, viewport and device presets, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector or network-idle waits, and image resizing. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current API details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, this cURL request captures the Stripe homepage and saves the response as a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key. If you are using a different page, replace the target URL. The API also accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free.
