For a map with several custom markers, use Google My Maps on a computer, then choose Menu → Print map. If you need a fast picture of exactly what is visible on screen, take a desktop screenshot instead. Keep Google’s attribution visible and legible in either case. My Maps’ documented export options for KML/KMZ and CSV contain map data, not a flat image.
Choose the right way to save your map
| What you need | Best workflow | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A printable map | Google My Maps → Menu → Print map | Google’s built-in print workflow. The current help description does not specify which file formats the print dialog offers. |
| A quick image of the current view | Desktop screenshot | A picture of the visible map area, including the markers and any attribution left on screen. |
| Data to edit in another mapping tool | Export the map as KML/KMZ, or a layer as CSV | Geographic data, not a ready-made image. |
| Viewing an existing custom map on a phone | Open it in Google Maps | Google says My Maps is not available as an Android app; the documented print route is for a computer. |
Create or open a map with multiple markers
Open Google My Maps in a desktop browser. My Maps is Google’s browser-based tool for creating and sharing custom maps. You can add places one at a time, import points from a spreadsheet, and style features in separate layers.
- Sign in to the Google account that owns the map, or create a new map.
- Add each marker with the place search box or the Add marker tool. Give markers useful names so they remain understandable in the printed result.
- Use layers to organize categories such as offices, stores, routes or events. Turn unwanted layers off before capture.
- Drag the map and adjust zoom until every required marker is in the visible area. Open a marker only when its label or details must appear in the image.
- Check the map at the final zoom. A marker at the edge can be clipped by a browser screenshot or by the print layout.
Google documents limits of 10,000 places, lines or shapes in one map and 2,000 features in a single layer. Those are product limits, not a guarantee that all features will be readable in one image; for dense maps, split the work into several views or layers.
Use My Maps’ print workflow
- With the desired layers and viewport visible, open the map’s left panel.
- Select Menu → Print map.
- Follow the on-screen print instructions. Select the paper orientation, destination and scale options offered by your browser or system dialog.
- Preview the result before saving or printing. Confirm that markers, labels, the legend and Google attribution are present and legible.
- Save through the dialog if it provides a file destination, or print to a PDF printer when a PDF is the required deliverable.
The current Google help description documents the print command but does not state which image formats, if any, the print dialog exposes. Do not assume that this command is a PNG or JPEG export button. If you need a conventional image file and the dialog does not provide one, use the screenshot method below.
#1 Best Overall
Capture the visible map as an image
A desktop screenshot is the practical fallback when you need a quick PNG or JPEG of the map currently displayed. It is a capture of the screen, not a special My Maps export.
- Resize the browser window and zoom the map so all required markers fit without overlapping the browser’s controls.
- Leave Google’s attribution visible. Do not crop, cover or blur it.
- Use your operating system’s region or window screenshot command and select only the map and the surrounding information needed by the reader.
- Save the result as PNG for sharp labels and transparent-looking interface edges, or convert a copy to JPEG when file size matters.
- Open the saved image and inspect small labels, marker icons and attribution at 100% zoom.
Windows
Use Snipping Tool to select the map region, or press Win + Shift + S and then save the snip.
macOS
Press Shift + Command + 4 to select a region, or Shift + Command + 5 for window and recording controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLinux
Use the screenshot utility supplied by your desktop environment and choose a rectangular region or window capture. The exact shortcut differs by distribution.
Browser zoom changes how much map detail fits on screen. It does not create more geographic data. For a larger deliverable, use a larger browser window, a higher-resolution display or several screenshots rather than shrinking labels until they are unreadable.
Keep Google attribution and check permission
Google’s mapping guidelines require attribution to remain provided, unobscured and legible. The guidelines also say attribution styling and placement may be customized when it stays close to the content and remains legible to an average viewer or reader. Never crop it out of a screenshot or cover it with a title bar.
Google allows map content to be printed for personal or non-commercial use, while distributed printed materials and commercial projects can have additional requirements. Review the current Google Maps guidelines for your intended audience, geography and distribution before publishing a map in marketing material, a book, a paid report or a public website. A screenshot is not automatically cleared for every use.

When KML, KMZ or CSV is the better choice
Choose data export when another application needs to edit, filter or redraw the locations. Export the complete map as KML/KMZ when the receiving application supports Google Earth-style map data. Export an individual layer as CSV when a spreadsheet or data-processing tool is the destination. Neither format is a flat image; you will need to render the data in another mapping application before producing a picture.
Common problems and fixes
The print command is missing
Confirm that you opened the map in My Maps on a computer and that the left panel is expanded. The documented procedure is not an Android My Maps workflow. If you are only viewing a shared map in Google Maps, open the map in My Maps with an account that has the required access.
Some markers are absent
Turn on the layer containing those markers, zoom out slightly, and check that the markers were actually saved. A screenshot captures only the current viewport; the print preview can also omit items outside the selected map area.
Labels or icons are too small
Reduce the geographic area per image, enlarge the browser window, or create separate captures by layer. Avoid relying on extreme browser zoom: it can make controls larger while reducing the area that fits.

Printing commonly produces a paper-oriented result or PDF destination. Use a region screenshot for PNG/JPEG, or render a saved PDF to an image with a tool approved for your workflow.
Attribution was cut off
Retake the screenshot with the attribution inside the selection. Do not remove it during editing. If a print layout places it awkwardly, change the layout or use a screenshot that keeps it close to the map.
The map is too crowded
Group features into layers, hide categories that are not needed in this image, or split the map into multiple views. My Maps’ 2,000-feature-per-layer and 10,000-feature-per-map limits do not solve visual overlap.

For an automated screenshot of a URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request API. It is useful when the map is part of a repeatable capture pipeline rather than a one-off manual export. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Use the URL of a publicly reachable map page (authentication and sharing settings still apply):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/maps/about/mymaps/ -o map.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.google.com/maps/about/mymaps/"}, timeout=90)
open("map.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.google.com/maps/about/mymaps/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the parameter reference and option names in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Relevant controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks before capture, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common screenshot-API parameter names are accepted to ease migration.
