VirtualBox is the practical choice if you need seamless guest-application windows today. Install VirtualBox Guest Additions inside the virtual machine, reboot the guest, and press Host + L—normally Right Ctrl + L. VirtualBox hides the guest desktop background and displays guest application windows beside your host applications.
VMware Workstation’s similar Unity Mode is now a legacy feature. VMware documentation says Unity was deprecated beginning with Workstation 17.6, so do not choose VMware solely for Unity. It may still be useful in an older, compatible Workstation setup, but current releases may not offer or support it.
What seamless VM windows actually do
Seamless Mode and Unity Mode make applications running in a virtual machine appear alongside normal host applications. They do not turn guest applications into native host programs.

That means closing, suspending, shutting down, or crashing the VM also closes or removes its integrated application windows. Host file associations do not automatically launch guest applications, and guest programs cannot automatically access host files unless you configure shared folders, networking, clipboard integration, drag-and-drop, or another host–guest connection.
For a new setup, use VirtualBox Seamless Mode. Treat VMware Unity as a compatibility feature for existing installations rather than as an equally current alternative.
Enable VirtualBox Seamless Mode
Prerequisites
- A working VirtualBox virtual machine with a graphical guest operating system.
- VirtualBox Guest Additions installed inside that VM.
- A reboot after installing or updating Guest Additions.
- Working guest graphics integration, with adequate virtual display memory and, where appropriate, 3D acceleration.
- A host desktop capable of displaying the integrated guest windows correctly.
Guest Additions are essential. Installing only the VirtualBox Extension Pack on the host is not enough: the Extension Pack and Guest Additions are separate components, and seamless windows depend on the package installed in the guest.

Open VirtualBox and boot the guest normally. Log in and wait for its desktop to finish loading.
2. Insert the Guest Additions image
With the VM running, open the VirtualBox VM window’s Devices menu and choose the command to insert the Guest Additions CD Image.

Then run the installer inside the guest:
- Windows guest: Open the mounted virtual CD, run the installer, accept the driver prompts, and reboot when prompted.
- Linux guest: Mount the image if necessary and run the guest-specific installer from the mounted disc. Depending on the distribution and kernel, compiler tools, kernel headers, and matching kernel modules may be required. There is no single Linux command that applies to every distribution and release.
- Other guests: Follow the Guest Additions instructions for that operating system. Feature availability varies.
Where possible, use Guest Additions that match the installed VirtualBox release. Oracle’s VirtualBox download page lists the current release and matching Guest Additions downloads.
3. Reboot the guest
Restart the guest operating system after installation. The video and integration drivers may not load correctly until the reboot is complete.
4. Toggle Seamless Mode
Press:
Host + LThe default VirtualBox Host key is normally Right Ctrl, so the usual shortcut is:
Right Ctrl + LVirtualBox documents this shortcut as the Seamless Mode toggle. Press the same combination again to return to the normal VM display. If Right Ctrl is not your Host key, check or change it in VirtualBox’s input preferences.
5. Launch a guest application
Open a simple guest program, such as a text editor or file manager. Its window should appear on the host desktop without the ordinary guest desktop surrounding it. Test a basic application first before relying on a demanding 3D, video, or hardware-accelerated program.

If VirtualBox Seamless Mode does not work
- Verify Guest Additions. Confirm they are installed inside the VM. The host’s Extension Pack is not a substitute.
- Check version matching. Update Guest Additions to correspond with the installed VirtualBox version where possible.
- Reboot the guest. Restart the operating system after any driver or Guest Additions change.
- Check the graphical session. Linux behavior can vary with the desktop environment, display server, compositing settings, and graphics drivers. Not every distribution or desktop configuration behaves identically.
- Inspect display settings. Increase virtual display memory if appropriate and test 3D acceleration settings. A graphics configuration that breaks guest rendering can also break window integration.
- Try an ordinary window. Applications using exclusive full-screen rendering, unusual window types, protected rendering, hardware acceleration, or complex child windows may not integrate correctly.
- Look for off-screen windows. Host–guest scaling or monitor changes can place a window outside the visible desktop. Use the host window switcher or temporarily simplify the monitor layout.
- Consider elevation. Guest applications running with elevated privileges may interact differently from ordinary windows, particularly on Windows guests.
To leave Seamless Mode when the desktop becomes confusing, press Host + L again. You can also use the VirtualBox mini-toolbar or VM menu to return to the normal display. If necessary, use the host window switcher or another virtual desktop to locate the VM console, then save your work before suspending or powering off the machine.
VMware Unity Mode: the legacy procedure
VMware Workstation’s older documentation describes Unity Mode, which hid the VM console and placed open guest applications on the host desktop. The historical workflow was:
- Boot the VM.
- Install VMware Tools or the appropriate guest tools.
- Reboot the guest.
- Choose the Unity command from the VMware interface.
- Launch or select a guest application.
- Use the Unity command again to return to the normal VM console.
Install VMware Tools
For a legacy Workstation setup, power on the VM and choose VM > Install VMware Tools. Let the guest mount the VMware Tools image, run the installer inside the guest, and reboot. Broadcom documents this menu path for Windows guests.
For many Linux guests, the distribution-provided open-vm-tools package is preferred instead of manually installing a VMware Tools ISO. Compatibility depends on the guest distribution and Workstation version; see Broadcom’s guidance on VMware Tools and open-vm-tools compatibility.
VMware Tools provides guest integration features such as improved display behavior, mouse handling, copy and paste, and drag-and-drop. It does not, by itself, guarantee that Unity is available in the Workstation version you are using.

Enter Unity in older Workstation interfaces
Depending on the older VMware product interface, the command appeared in one of these locations:
- Workstation: View > Unity
- Some interfaces: Virtual Machine > Enter Unity
- Player-style interface: Player > Unity
These paths come from older Workstation documentation and should not be assumed to exist in current releases.

VMware’s Workstation Pro 17.0 documentation explicitly marks Unity Mode as deprecated in Workstation 17.6 and later. Broadcom’s current Workstation product families use calendar-style version labels, including releases such as 25H2 and 26H1, but the available evidence does not establish that Unity remains supported in those releases.
Therefore, on a current Workstation installation, Unity may be unavailable, unsupported, or unsuitable for a new setup. Do not install VMware Workstation specifically expecting Unity to work. It remains reasonable to try it only when maintaining an older compatible VM and Workstation environment that already depends on it.
VMware Workstation Pro is currently offered by Broadcom at no charge for personal, educational, and commercial use, subject to its account, download, and registration process. That licensing change does not restore or guarantee Unity Mode.

VirtualBox’s base packages are listed as freely available under GPLv3 on Oracle’s download page, but separately distributed components can have separate licensing terms. For official downloads, use Oracle’s VirtualBox page. For VMware, use Broadcom’s official download instructions and do not assume the old standalone Player edition is still the recommended product.
Important limitations and security considerations
It is still VM performance
Seamless display does not make a guest program run at native speed. Performance still depends on CPU and RAM allocation, storage speed, virtual graphics support, guest drivers, host load, and the application’s workload. Demanding games, CAD, video editing, protected video, and GPU-heavy software may perform poorly or fail to integrate.
High-DPI and multi-monitor problems
Expect possible blurry windows, incorrect scaling, menus that are too large or small, windows opening partly off-screen, and redraw problems after changing monitors. Different scaling factors across displays can make the behavior worse. Test the exact monitor arrangement and scaling settings before adopting seamless windows for daily work.

Full-screen and elevated applications
Applications that require exclusive full-screen rendering can defeat seamless mode. Use windowed or borderless-window modes where available. Elevated guest applications may also behave differently from ordinary windows.
Integration is not isolation-proof
Seamless mode changes how windows are displayed; it does not remove the VM’s security boundary or create a perfect sandbox. Clipboard sharing, shared folders, drag-and-drop, networking, and USB passthrough all create possible host–guest data paths. If isolation is the main reason for using the VM, disable unnecessary integration features and keep only the channels you need.

- Choose VirtualBox Seamless Mode if integrated guest windows are a requirement for a new setup. Install matching Guest Additions and expect compatibility to depend on the guest OS and graphics configuration.
- Use VMware Unity only for a legacy environment where an older compatible Workstation release and VMware Tools installation already support it.
- Use a normal VM window, remote desktop, or application-publishing solution when seamless integration is unreliable, unavailable, or unsuitable for the application.
