Use a Linux Azure Function, deploy Playwright’s browser executable and Linux dependencies with your app, and set the browser path explicitly. In a Node.js package deployment, configure PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH, enable a remote build with scmDoBuildDuringDeployment=true, and close the browser in a finally block. For deterministic dependencies, build a custom Linux container. If the Function should only orchestrate tests, Microsoft Playwright Testing can run the browsers outside the Function.
What Playwright needs inside an Azure Function
The Playwright npm or Python package is only the client library. A clean Function instance also needs a matching browser executable (Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit) and the Linux system libraries required by that browser. A deployment that contains JavaScript but no browser files fails at launch with an executable-missing error.
Use Linux for the patterns below. Microsoft’s Linux Function guidance requires the resource kind functionapp,linux, reserved=true, and a runtime-specific linuxFxVersion. For new serverless applications, Microsoft identifies Flex Consumption as the plan to evaluate first; the older Consumption plan is described as a migration target rather than the preferred direction for new work.

This is the simplest arrangement when your Function code is deployed as source and Azure performs the Linux dependency installation.

1. Create a Linux Node.js Function App
- Create a Function App with a Linux operating system and a Node.js runtime matching your project.
- Enable Application Insights so launch and navigation failures are visible in logs.
- Prefer Flex Consumption for a new serverless app unless your workload has a reason to use another supported plan.
2. Install Playwright and choose a browser
Install the package in package.json. The example handler below uses Chromium through the full playwright package:
npm install playwrightIf you use playwright-chromium, point the browser-path setting at that package’s local browser directory instead. Keep the package version and browser version together; updating one without redeploying the other can produce incompatible binaries.
3. Set the browser path
In Function App > Settings > Environment variables, add:
PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=/home/site/wwwroot/node_modules/playwright-chromium/.local-browsers/That path is the one used by Microsoft’s Ceruleoscope sample for the Chromium package. If you install the full playwright package, use the directory created by that package in your deployed node_modules. The important rule is that the runtime path must exactly match where the deployment placed the browser.
4. Make Azure build on deployment
Set the application setting scmDoBuildDuringDeployment=true. The remote build then runs npm install and Playwright’s install script on Azure’s Linux environment, rather than relying on browser files copied from a different operating system.

Do not include a locally generated node_modules directory when you expect Azure to perform this build. Add it to .funcignore so a Windows or macOS dependency tree cannot overwrite the Linux tree created during deployment. Confirm in deployment logs that the Playwright install step actually ran.
5. Launch and close the browser per invocation

};The handler shape varies between the classic Functions model and the newer programming model, but the operational requirements do not: launch headless, navigate with an explicit wait condition, and close the browser even when navigation throws. Treat each invocation as short-lived. A warm instance may retain files or processes, but your code should not depend on a previous invocation’s browser or page.
Pattern B: a custom Linux container
Choose a container when you need a reproducible browser stack, native libraries that the platform build cannot provide, or a controlled Playwright version. Azure’s Functions images include Node.js 22 examples such as mcr.microsoft.com/azure-functions/node:4-node22.

COPY . .Pin the base-image and Playwright versions in your build process. A moving base-image tag does not update an already published image. Rebuild and redeploy periodically so operating-system and browser security fixes enter the image. Rebuild whenever application code or either dependency lockfile changes.
Container runtime rules
- Playwright recommends Docker’s
--initflag so the browser process does not receive special PID 1 treatment. Use the equivalent init configuration available in your Azure hosting setup. - For Chromium, Playwright recommends
--ipc=hostto reduce shared-memory failures. If your hosting plan cannot provide that setting, test pages with large or complex rendering workloads and watch for browser crashes. - Do not use Alpine for Firefox or WebKit browser builds. Playwright documents glibc requirements and does not support musl-based distributions for those builds.
- For untrusted sites, run as a separate non-root user and apply an appropriate seccomp profile. A screenshot service that visits arbitrary URLs should be treated as a browser sandboxing problem, not merely an HTTP client.
Pattern C: Microsoft Playwright Testing
Microsoft Playwright Testing runs the browsers in Azure, while your Function acts as an orchestrator. It supports Linux and Windows clients and Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox workers. Microsoft lists availability in East US, West US 3, East Asia, and West Europe, consumption-based pricing, and a limit of 50 parallel tests per workspace (product information accessed September 29, 2026).

This model is useful for scheduled or CI-driven suites where browser processes should not compete with Function memory and cold starts. It is less suitable when the page must be reached through private network paths available only to your Function, or when you need complete control over the browser image and OS libraries. Check the service’s current regional availability and pricing before committing to an architecture.

Use package deployment for a small number of controlled navigations, a container when deterministic dependencies matter, and managed testing when the Function should not host browsers at all.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Cold starts and browser launch
Launching Chromium is expensive compared with handling an HTTP request. Keep navigation timeouts finite, avoid waiting for networkidle on pages that maintain long-lived connections, and return a useful status when a page exceeds your function timeout. Reuse a browser only with an explicit lifecycle design and strict isolation between tenants; otherwise launch and close within each invocation as shown above.
Memory and concurrency
Each page consumes memory for JavaScript, images, fonts, and renderer processes. Limit concurrent pages per instance, close contexts, and avoid downloading assets you do not need. A Function scale-out event can start several browsers at once, so size the plan for the aggregate rather than one invocation.
Billing
Function execution, storage, Application Insights, container hosting, and managed browser usage have separate meters. Playwright itself does not make an Azure Function invocation free. Measure navigation duration and memory in a staging workload, then set concurrency and timeout limits that fit your selected plan. Microsoft Playwright Testing uses consumption-based pricing; verify the current rate card for your region.

Troubleshooting common failures
“Executable doesn’t exist” or “browserType.launch: Executable doesn’t exist”
- Cause: the browser install script did not run, or
PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATHpoints to a directory that is absent. - Fix: enable
scmDoBuildDuringDeployment=true, remove locally builtnode_modulesfrom the artifact, redeploy, and inspect logs for the Playwright install step. Verify the exact deployed path.
Browser starts locally but fails in Azure
- Cause: local binaries or system libraries differ from Azure Linux.
- Fix: deploy to Linux, install dependencies during the Linux build, or move to a container using
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium. Do not copy a Windows or macOS browser cache.
Navigation times out
- Cause: the target is slow, blocked, waiting for never-ending network activity, or unreachable from Azure.
- Fix: use
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'for a basic response, set an explicit timeout, log the final URL and response status, and test DNS, TLS, outbound rules, and proxy requirements from the Function environment.
Chromium crashes or reports shared-memory errors
- Cause: insufficient memory or a constrained
/dev/shm. - Fix: reduce parallel pages, increase instance resources, and use the container runtime’s equivalent of Playwright’s recommended
--ipc=hostsetting where supported.
Deployment succeeds but the function returns 500
- Cause: the handler is using a programming-model shape different from the deployed Functions runtime, or an exception is escaping before a response is assigned.
- Fix: confirm the Node.js runtime and trigger model, wrap launch and navigation in
try/finally, log the exception, and return a controlled 4xx/5xx response.
Untrusted pages create a security risk
- Cause: arbitrary pages can exploit browser features, consume resources, or attempt access to internal endpoints.
- Fix: isolate the browser, use a non-root container user and seccomp profile, restrict outbound network access, validate allowed URLs, and enforce time, memory, and response-size limits.
