To run a JAR on a Mac, install a compatible Java runtime or JDK, then open Terminal and run java -jar "/path/to/file.jar". This works only if the JAR is an executable application with a main class; many JARs are libraries or need other files alongside them.
Before you run a JAR
A JAR (“Java ARchive”) is a ZIP-compatible package that can contain compiled Java classes and resources. Some JARs are applications; others are libraries meant to be used by another program. An executable JAR normally identifies its starting point with a Main-Class entry in its manifest. The Java launcher’s documentation for java -jar explains this requirement.
Only run a JAR from a source you trust. It is executable code, not a document. Avoid running unknown downloads with administrator privileges or bypassing security warnings without checking the publisher.

Open Applications → Utilities → Terminal and enter:

java -versionIf a Java version appears, Java is available from Terminal. If macOS reports that no Java runtime is present, install one before continuing. If a version appears but the JAR fails, the application may require a different Java release.
Check your Mac’s processor
In Terminal, run:
uname -marm64means Apple Silicon; choose an ARM64 or AArch64 Java installer.x86_64means Intel; choose an x64 installer.
You can also check Apple menu → About This Mac for the Chip or Processor information. Java bytecode is generally portable, but a JAR that uses native libraries may require a build for your Mac’s architecture. Install the Java version the app requires
Check the JAR publisher’s system requirements first. The right Java version depends on the application—not simply on which release is newest. As of August 18, 2026, Oracle lists JDK 26 as its current release and JDK 25 as its latest LTS release, but older software may require Java 8, 11, 17, or 21. Oracle’s download page lists releases and licensing terms.

Reputable download options include Oracle JDK, Eclipse Temurin, and Azul Zulu. Download the architecture that matches your Mac. If you choose Oracle Java, check the current license terms for your intended use rather than assuming all versions and uses have identical terms.

For Oracle’s graphical installer, open the downloaded DMG, open the PKG inside it, and follow the prompts. Oracle installs JDKs under /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/. Then verify the installation with java -version. Details are in Oracle’s installation instructions.
Run a JAR from Terminal
- Open Terminal.
- Type
java -jar(including the space after-jar). - Drag the JAR from Finder into the Terminal window to insert its full path.
- Press Return.
The command will look similar to this:
java -jar "/Users/alex/Downloads/My App.jar"Keep the quotation marks around paths with spaces. You can also type the path yourself, or move to the JAR’s folder first:
cd ~/Downloads
java -jar "My App.jar"The official Java launcher reference defines java -jar jarfile as launching the main class named by the JAR’s manifest. Running it from Terminal is also the best first troubleshooting step because Terminal shows errors that a Finder launch may hide.
Can you double-click a JAR in Finder?
Sometimes. Double-clicking can work if Java is installed and associated with JAR files, the JAR has a valid entry point, and the application is designed to launch this way. It may fail or appear to do nothing if the program needs command-line arguments, a particular working directory, or other files. Oracle documents both Finder and Terminal approaches in its Mac JDK readme. If Finder does not open the program, run it from Terminal to see the actual error.

Run a JAR with arguments, more memory, or a specific Java version
Put application arguments after the JAR filename:
java -jar "MyApp.jar" --help
java -jar "MyApp.jar" input.txt --output results/To set the maximum Java heap to approximately 2 GB, put -Xmx2G before -jar:
java -Xmx2G -jar "MyApp.jar"More memory can help an application that genuinely needs a larger heap, but it will not fix a missing dependency, incompatible Java version, or invalid JAR.
If the JAR expects nearby configuration files, libraries, or assets, run it from the application’s folder and keep its distribution together. To see which Java versions macOS can find, run:
/usr/libexec/java_home -VSelect a particular installed version for one command like this:

/usr/libexec/java_home -v 21 --exec java -jar "MyApp.jar"Replace 21 with the version the application requires and that you have installed. Oracle documents java_home for locating and selecting installed JDKs in its macOS installation guide. This command selects Java for that launch; it does not permanently change your default.
Fix common JAR errors

Could not find or load main class |
The JAR may be incomplete or incorrectly packaged, or the launch method may be wrong. | Use the publisher’s documented command and complete distribution. A JAR launched with -jar relies on its manifest; do not assume a random class-path change will fix it. |
ClassNotFoundException, NoSuchMethodError, or missing-library messages |

If macOS warns that the developer cannot be verified
First determine what triggered the warning: it might concern the JAR’s native .app wrapper, a Java installer, or another downloaded component. Only proceed if you trust the source and have verified that you have the expected file. Apple’s guidance is to attempt to open the app, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the security message, and choose Open Anyway if you decide the software is safe. See Apple’s instructions for opening a blocked app. macOS security checks depend on how the software was packaged and signed; Apple describes Gatekeeper’s checks in its platform security guide.
Do not disable Gatekeeper system-wide as a routine fix. Apple documents spctl controls in its developer documentation, but changing a global security setting is not necessary to run a trusted JAR in the normal case. Oracle also explains the risks of unsigned or self-signed Java applications in its Java security guidance.

Treat a JAR like any other downloaded program: get it from the developer’s official site or another trusted source, and check the publisher’s signature or checksum if one is provided. For a SHA-256 checksum, run:

shasum -a 256 "MyApp.jar"Compare the result with the checksum published by the developer. Do not run an unfamiliar JAR with sudo, and do not bypass a warning just because a website says to. If the source is questionable, do not run the file.
When a JAR cannot be run by itself
If a JAR lacks a Main-Class, it may be a library rather than a user-facing program. If it reports missing classes, libraries, or native components, the publisher may expect you to keep a folder structure intact or use a script or installer included in the download. Some software also needs JavaFX or a particular Java version. In those cases, use the publisher’s launch instructions or a packaged Mac application rather than trying to turn an incomplete JAR into a standalone app.
A JAR that opens a window is still not automatically a native macOS application. The publisher must package and test any native components and, if distributing an app wrapper, handle its signing and notarization. If the JAR is intended for Windows or Linux, its Java code may be portable but its interface or native dependencies may not be.

Can I run a JAR on a Mac without installing Java?
Only if the application includes its own Java runtime or launcher. Otherwise, macOS needs a compatible Java runtime or JDK to execute the JAR.
Can I open a JAR with Archive Utility?
A JAR is ZIP-compatible, so an archive utility may show or extract its contents. Extracting it does not run the program; use Java and the publisher’s launch instructions.
How do I stop a JAR running in Terminal?
Click the Terminal window where it is running and press Control-C. If the application has its own quit command or menu, use that instead.
Can I make a JAR behave like a Mac app?
A publisher can package a JAR with a native .app launcher and, where appropriate, bundle a runtime and sign or notarize the app. A raw JAR does not provide those Mac-app features by itself.
