Build a separate argument for every option with ProcessBuilder, wait with a bounded timeout, collect CutyCapt’s output, check the exit code, and confirm that the output file is present and non-empty. The basic contract is cutycapt --url=... --out=...; Java does not embed CutyCapt’s renderer.
What you need before writing Java code
- A CutyCapt executable available on the Java process
PATH. - The Qt libraries required by your distribution’s package.
- A writable destination for the image or PDF.
- A display arrangement supported by your operating system. CutyCapt uses a Qt/WebKit-based runtime, and its documentation does not promise a universal headless mode.
Install CutyCapt on Kali
Kali documents installation with:
sudo apt install cutycapt
Use your distribution’s equivalent package elsewhere. Installing the packaged executable and its matching Qt libraries together avoids version mismatches. Verify the command before involving Java:
cutycapt --url=https://example.com --out=/tmp/example.png
If the shell cannot find cutycapt, use its absolute path in Java, such as /usr/bin/cutycapt, or correct the service user’s PATH.
A minimal Java capture
This complete example captures a page to PNG, enables JavaScript, gives the page 1.5 seconds after loading, and limits the overall CutyCapt wait to 90 seconds.

ProcessBuilder receives a list, not one shell command. That keeps URLs, file names, headers, and bodies as distinct arguments and avoids quoting errors. Merging standard error into standard output gives you Qt warnings and CutyCapt diagnostics in one log. Read the stream while the process runs so a noisy child cannot block on a full pipe.
Make process handling reliable
Use a timeout longer than CutyCapt’s page wait
--max-wait is documented in milliseconds and defaults to 90,000. Your Java timeout should be slightly longer than that value to allow process shutdown. On timeout, terminate the child, escalate to destroyForcibly() if necessary, and record the URL and command settings.
Validate both status and content
An exit code of zero proves only that the process completed according to its command contract. Check that the output exists, has non-zero length, and can be opened by the consumer that will use it. A syntactically valid image can still show missing scripts, fonts, or images.
Keep secrets out of diagnostics
Headers, cookies, authorization values, and request bodies can contain credentials. Pass only what the target requires and redact those values before writing merged process output to application logs.

| Need | CutyCapt options | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Destination and format | --out, --out-format |
Use PNG, JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, SVG, PDF, or other formats supported by the installed build. The file extension alone should not be your only format control. |
| Minimum viewport | --min-width, --min-height |
The documented defaults are 800 × 600. Increase them for responsive layouts that otherwise select a mobile breakpoint. |
| Wait for page activity | --delay, --max-wait |
Use a delay for client-rendered content, but retain a bounded maximum so a stalled request cannot occupy a worker indefinitely. |
| Scripts and resources | --javascript=on|off, --auto-load-images=on|off, --plugins=on|off |
Turn JavaScript and images on when the visual result depends on them. Disable unnecessary resources only when you understand the page’s dependencies. |
| Rendering scale | --zoom-factor, --zoom-text-only |
Adjust page scale or text scale when layout or legibility is the issue. |
| Backgrounds | --print-backgrounds |
Enable this when a PDF or print-oriented capture must retain CSS background colors and images. |
| Network routing | --http-proxy |
Supply the proxy required by your network, and test it from the same account that runs Java. |
Pass headers, methods, and request bodies
CutyCapt accepts repeatable --header values. It also supports --method=get|post|put and request data through --body-string or --body-base64. Add each item as its own Java list element:

"--delay=2000",

Use --body-base64 when binary or exact byte representation matters. For authenticated pages, prefer narrowly scoped headers and avoid putting tokens in a command log. --user-agent, --app-name, and --app-version let you identify the client or request the markup intended for a particular client class.
Capture a local file or produce a PDF
The --url option accepts HTTP, file, and other supported URL forms. A local page can therefore be passed as a file URL, subject to the permissions and resource paths visible to the CutyCapt process:
List<String> command = List.of(
"cutycapt",
"--url=file:///opt/reports/index.html",
"--out=/tmp/report.pdf",
"--out-format=pdf",
"--min-width=1280",
"--min-height=900",
"--print-backgrounds=on"
);
For PDF output, confirm the installed build’s format support and inspect page breaks, background rendering, fonts, and margins. A screenshot viewport is not the same thing as a paginated print layout.
Wait for JavaScript without guessing blindly
CutyCapt exposes a fixed delay rather than a modern browser-style “wait for selector” primitive. Start with a short delay, inspect the result, then increase it for known client-rendered sections. Keep --javascript=on and images enabled when the page needs them. If the page never settles because of a long poll or an unavailable resource, --max-wait remains the safety boundary.
When a page has a deterministic server-rendered URL, prefer that URL or a request body that returns the completed state. Timing alone is less reliable than capturing a representation that does not depend on asynchronous work.

Why modern pages can fail
CutyCapt renders through Qt/WebKit. That is useful for legacy or straightforward pages, but it may not reproduce APIs, JavaScript behavior, CSS, fonts, or security checks expected by a current Chromium browser. A blank or incomplete capture can therefore be a compatibility problem rather than a Java error.
- Check the generated file visually for missing scripts, images, fonts, and layout.
- Compare the same URL in a current browser and note features the page requires.
- Record the operating system, CutyCapt package version, display setup, URL, viewport, and timing values.
- For pages that require current browser behavior, evaluate a Puppeteer/Chrome-based command-line tool such as
capture-website-cli, which uses Puppeteer/Chrome and supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output.
Troubleshooting CutyCapt launched by Java
“Cannot run program cutycapt”
The executable is absent from the Java service’s PATH. Install the package, use an absolute executable path, and verify permissions under the same user and service environment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The process hangs
A resource, script, proxy, or display operation may be waiting indefinitely. Set a finite --max-wait, apply the Java timeout, capture diagnostics, then terminate the process. Do not leave unbounded child processes in a worker pool.
Exit code is zero but the file is empty or missing
Check the output directory’s permissions and the exact --out argument. Then verify file existence and size in Java; a successful exit is not a substitute for output validation.
JavaScript content is absent
Ensure --javascript=on, allow enough --delay, and confirm the page does not require browser APIs unavailable in Qt/WebKit. Inspect the page rather than repeatedly increasing the delay when the renderer is fundamentally incompatible.

Images or fonts are missing
Keep --auto-load-images=on, check network access and proxy settings, and confirm that the runtime can resolve the resource URLs. Missing fonts can also change line wrapping and page height.

It works interactively but not in CI
The service may lack a graphical display or have a different environment, filesystem, proxy, or font set. Validate the distribution’s display requirements and use an appropriate virtual-display arrangement when needed; CutyCapt’s documentation does not promise universal headless operation.
Authenticated capture returns a login page
Supply only the required --header values, check that the method and body are correct, and ensure redirects and cookies are handled by the installed build. Never print authorization headers in diagnostics.
Operational checklist for a Java worker
- Resolve and verify the executable path at startup.
- Create a unique output path rather than allowing concurrent jobs to overwrite one file.
- Build arguments as a list; never concatenate untrusted URL or header text into a shell command.
- Set viewport, JavaScript, image, delay, and maximum-wait values explicitly for the page class.
- Run with a Java timeout slightly longer than
--max-wait. - Collect and redact diagnostics.
- Check exit status, file existence, file size, and—where practical—the decoded output.
- Retain the OS, package version, display configuration, URL, and options with failure records.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server, so Java can request a capture over HTTP instead of managing a local Qt/WebKit process. The API accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF responses and supports the same common parameter names used by many screenshot APIs.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. In plain terms, it accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try the API.

When to choose each approach
| Situation | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy page, local deployment, and full control of a CLI | CutyCapt from Java | No service request is required, and command-line options cover formats, timing, headers, methods, proxy, and viewport. |
| Current JavaScript-heavy site | A current Chromium-based capture tool or service | Modern browser APIs and rendering behavior are more likely to match the page. |
| Production capture without maintaining browser or display dependencies | ScreenshotNeo | HTTP and MCP interfaces avoid local browser setup, with explicit verdict and billing headers. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Java call CutyCapt without invoking a shell?
Yes. Use ProcessBuilder with a list of arguments; it starts the executable directly and avoids shell quoting.
What does CutyCapt render?
Its documented renderer is Qt/WebKit-based, so it captures WebKit’s rendering and may differ from a current Chromium browser on modern sites.
Does increasing --delay guarantee JavaScript will work?
No. Delay only gives asynchronous work more time. A page that depends on unsupported browser APIs can remain incomplete regardless of the delay.
Which values should be stored for reproducing a failed capture?
Record the operating system, CutyCapt package version, display setup, URL, output format, viewport, JavaScript/image settings, delay, maximum wait, and relevant network options.
