For a local MCP server, let the MCP client start the server as a child process over stdio. A quick example is npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything. For access over a network, start the server with Streamable HTTP instead. The right command depends on whether the client launches a local process or connects to a remote endpoint.
These are different transports, not just different ways to spell the same startup command. With stdio, MCP messages travel through the process’s standard input and output. With Streamable HTTP, clients reach the server over HTTP. Keep protocol output clean, choose the transport your client supports, and check the selected server’s own instructions for configuration such as authentication.
Choose the transport before choosing the command
The first question is where the MCP client will run relative to the server. A client that can launch a local process normally uses stdio. A client that needs to reach a server over a network uses Streamable HTTP. HTTP+SSE remains an option for compatibility with older clients, but the MCP TypeScript SDK describes it as deprecated for new implementations.
| Transport | Who starts the server? | How the client reaches it | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
stdio |
The MCP client launches the server as a child process. | Newline-delimited JSON-RPC messages travel over the child process’s stdin and stdout. | A local integration where the client can spawn a command. |
| Streamable HTTP | Start the server separately. | The client connects over HTTP; the transport can also carry server-to-client SSE notifications. | A server that must be reachable over a network. |
| HTTP+SSE | Start the server separately. | Clients use the legacy SSE transport and its associated message endpoint. | Compatibility with an older client or server that requires it. |
Transport choice does not by itself settle security or deployment details. The MCP sources establish the local-versus-remote distinction, but authentication, TLS, and package-specific settings depend on the server and environment you select. Check that server’s documentation before exposing it beyond your machine.

Run a local MCP server over stdio with npx
To try the example server in its default stdio mode, run this in a terminal with Node.js and npm available:
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything
The -y option tells npx to proceed without an interactive confirmation prompt. For an explicit transport selection, the example repository also documents:
npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything stdio
These commands start the process; they are not a standalone interactive chat interface. In a normal local integration, configure the MCP client to spawn the command and exchange MCP JSON-RPC messages with it. Starting a stdio server in an ordinary terminal without a client attached does not create a network endpoint that another machine can connect to.
What must go over stdin and stdout
A stdio connection is a protocol stream. The client writes MCP messages to the server’s stdin, and the server writes responses and other protocol messages to stdout. Messages are newline-delimited JSON-RPC. The server may write diagnostic logs to stderr, but stdout must contain only valid MCP messages. A startup banner, progress message, or debug print sent to stdout can corrupt the session even if the server otherwise starts successfully.

cd src/everything
npm install
npm run start:streamableHttp
This sequence installs the checkout’s dependencies and starts its Streamable HTTP mode. It is not the command for a local stdio client launch. The repository also lists npm run start:sse for its legacy SSE mode; use that only when compatibility with an older client or server calls for it.
Start the example server over Streamable HTTP
When a client needs to reach the server over HTTP rather than spawn it as a local child process, select Streamable HTTP explicitly:
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything streamableHttp
This command selects the example server’s Streamable HTTP mode. The client then needs the endpoint and any required server-specific configuration. Do not assume a port, path, authentication method, or TLS setup not documented for the server you are running.

It uses HTTP request/response and supports optional server-to-client notifications over SSE. That makes it distinct from the older HTTP+SSE transport, which remains useful only when an older client or server requires it. If you control both ends of a new integration, choose Streamable HTTP rather than starting with the legacy transport.

Bridge stdio to HTTP with Supergateway
Some MCP servers only speak stdio, while the client that needs them expects a network transport. Supergateway can run the stdio process and expose it as Streamable HTTP:
npx -y supergateway
--stdio "npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem ./my-folder"
--outputTransport streamableHttp
--port 8000
In this example, Supergateway starts the filesystem server pointed at ./my-folder, bridges its stdio transport, and listens on port 8000. Supergateway documents /mcp as the default endpoint for Streamable HTTP. A client connecting to the bridge must use the appropriate endpoint and be able to reach the host and port where the bridge is running.
The directory argument is a meaningful access boundary: select only the folder the server needs. Do not substitute a broader path just to make a test work unless you intend to grant that broader filesystem access. Network reachability also changes the exposure of a local process, so review authentication and TLS requirements for your chosen server and deployment before making the bridge accessible outside a trusted environment.

Use the legacy SSE output only for compatibility
Supergateway also documents a stdio-to-SSE arrangement with --ssePath /sse and --messagePath /message. Use those options only when the client requires the legacy SSE transport. For a new remote setup, prefer the Streamable HTTP output shown above.

Connect a remote Streamable HTTP server back to local stdio
The bridge can also run in the opposite direction: Supergateway documents the --streamableHttp URL option for connecting a remote Streamable HTTP server back to local stdio. This is useful when a local stdio-only client needs to work with a remote server. The actual URL and any access requirements must come from the remote server’s operator; do not guess them.
Run the bridge in Docker
Docker is an optional packaging layer if you do not want to set up Node.js locally for the bridge. Supergateway documents this command:
docker run -it --rm -p 8000:8000 supercorp/supergateway
--stdio "npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /"
--port 8000
The container runs Supergateway, publishes port 8000, and launches the filesystem server inside the container. The documented example points that server at /. For real use, mount or select a narrower host directory instead of granting access to the entire container filesystem. Docker changes packaging and isolation; it does not remove the need to choose an appropriate transport or to check network and access controls.

- The stdio server appears to hang in a terminal. A stdio server expects a client to speak MCP over stdin/stdout; it is not necessarily a terminal UI. Configure an MCP client to launch it, or choose an HTTP transport if clients need network access.
- The client reports malformed JSON-RPC or disconnects immediately. Check that nothing writes banners, logs, or other non-protocol text to stdout. Send diagnostics to stderr and keep stdout for valid MCP messages only.
- The client cannot connect to a server started with stdio. A local stdio process is not an HTTP listener. Have the client spawn that process, start the server in Streamable HTTP mode, or use a bridge such as Supergateway.
- The client cannot reach the Streamable HTTP server. Confirm the server was started in the intended HTTP mode and use its documented endpoint. With the Supergateway example, the documented default Streamable HTTP path is
/mcp. Also check host and port reachability and the server’s own access requirements. - An older client fails with Streamable HTTP. Check whether that client requires the legacy HTTP+SSE transport. If so, use the server’s supported SSE mode or a documented bridge configuration; do not assume all clients support the same transports.
- A bridge starts but the filesystem tool cannot access the expected files. Verify the directory argument and, when using Docker, the mounted path. Give the server only the intended directory rather than broad access.
- The server process does not exit cleanly when the client disconnects. The MCP TypeScript SDK’s stdio client transport closes stdin and then attempts SIGTERM and, if needed, SIGKILL. If a process remains, inspect the client and server’s shutdown behavior rather than assuming that ending a terminal command alone has closed every child process.
Keep startup reliable and costs predictable
For local stdio, keep the server under the MCP client’s process management so the client can start and close it as part of its session. For HTTP deployments, treat the server as a separate service: document its endpoint and transport, and separately verify the authentication, TLS, and network access controls required by that particular implementation. The MCP transport choice does not provide a universal answer for those deployment settings.
For repeatable deployments, use a pinned and reviewed package or image version according to your organization’s release practices; the example commands here demonstrate invocation, not a version-pinning policy. The sources behind these commands do not establish comparative performance, uptime, or reliability figures, so choose based on client compatibility, deployment constraints, and the server’s own documented behavior. If you bridge an HTTP-accessible service, account for the additional running process and network exposure as well as the underlying server.

Does running an MCP server command by itself connect it to an AI client?
No. For stdio, the client must launch and communicate with the process. For HTTP, the client must be configured to connect to the server’s endpoint.
Can I use Streamable HTTP from a local machine?
Yes. It is a transport choice, not a requirement that the server be hosted on a different machine; use it when the client should connect over HTTP instead of spawning a stdio child process.
Is the example server a production-ready server for my application?
The example commands show how to start its documented modes. They do not establish production suitability; assess the selected server’s own documentation, access controls, and operational requirements.
