There is no single method for rooting every Android 8.1 Oreo phone. The safe route depends on the exact model, region, build, bootloader policy and partition layout. For a device whose bootloader can be unlocked, the usual approach is to unlock it, patch the matching stock boot image with the official Magisk app, then flash it using that phone’s documented method. Unlocking normally erases the phone, so back up first.
What rooting involves—and what it does not
- Bootloader unlocking permits modified images to be installed. It is usually a prerequisite to rooting, and normally triggers a factory reset.
- Root access gives approved apps elevated system privileges. Magisk provides root by modifying the boot process rather than traditionally rewriting the system partition.
- Custom recovery, such as TWRP, is optional and device-specific; it is not required for every Magisk installation.
- A custom ROM replaces the operating system. Root is not automatically required to install one.
Android 8.1 is a software version, not a device model. Many phones may be rootable, but there is no supported generic method for every Oreo device. If the bootloader cannot be officially unlocked, there may be no safe, supported rooting route.
Check your phone and decide whether to proceed
Before downloading an image or issuing a flash command, record the device details. Menu names vary, but model and build information are usually under Settings → About phone. Developer options are commonly under Settings → System → Developer options.

Do not substitute an image for a similarly named model, another region or carrier, or a different build. Check whether the manufacturer requires an unlock token, account approval, waiting period, SIM or other condition. Some carrier variants do not permit unlocking.

Consider whether root is necessary for your goal. You may be able to disable unwanted apps in Android settings or with ADB, change the interface with a launcher, or use a custom ROM without keeping root. Root can enable system-level tools, but it also complicates updates and can affect security and app compatibility.
Prepare the tools, files and backup
- A Windows, macOS or Linux computer and a reliable USB cable.
- Current Android SDK Platform-Tools, which include
adbandfastboot. Google says current tools are intended to remain backward-compatible with older Android versions: Platform-Tools downloads. - The correct Windows USB driver, if needed.
- The exact stock firmware, or at minimum the stock boot image for the build currently installed.
- The official Magisk APK from the Magisk project or its releases page.
- The manufacturer’s bootloader-unlock instructions and a device-specific flashing guide.
Back up photos, videos, contacts, messages, app data, internal-storage files, authenticator codes and recovery keys. Ensure you can restore accounts that use two-factor authentication. Keep the original boot image and full stock firmware available for recovery. Charge the phone to about 60% or more before starting.
Magisk’s official release page listed v30.7 as the latest stable release on August 18, 2026. That does not establish compatibility with every Android 8.1 device; consult the device-specific instructions if the current app does not work. Avoid APK mirrors, unknown pre-patched images and old guides built around unofficial “Magisk Manager” downloads or obsolete ZIP steps. Unlock the bootloader
Android’s standard unlocking flow requires enabling OEM unlocking, then confirming the unlock on the phone. The exact command and eligibility rules vary by manufacturer and model; unlocking normally wipes user data and changes the verified-boot state. - On the phone, enable Developer options → OEM unlocking if the setting is present. Follow manufacturer requirements first. If the setting is absent or unlocking is prohibited, stop rather than trying random exploit tools.
- Enable USB debugging, connect the phone, and accept the computer authorization prompt.
- Open a terminal in the Platform-Tools folder and check the tools:
adb version fastboot --version - Check that ADB sees the authorized phone:
adb devicesA serial number should appear after you approve the prompt on the phone.
- Reboot to the bootloader and check the fastboot connection:
adb reboot bootloader fastboot devices - Use only the unlock command specified for the exact phone. A common modern command is
fastboot flashing unlock; some older devices usefastboot oem unlock. Do not try one blindly in place of the other. Confirm the warning on the phone’s screen using its hardware buttons. - After the reset, complete Android setup and enable USB debugging again.
Samsung phones generally do not use this standard fastboot route: their process may involve Download mode, Odin or a compatible tool, and a model- and region-specific AP firmware package. Unlocking can permanently trip Knox-related security features. Follow a guide for the exact Samsung model rather than applying the commands above.
Find the stock image that matches the installed build
The stock boot.img is the image you will patch. It must match the exact model and installed build, including the relevant region or carrier firmware. Obtain it from an official firmware package, manufacturer support page, or the current OTA package where the image can be extracted. Google provides factory images and flashing information for eligible Pixel and Nexus devices at its factory-image page.
Keep a clean copy of the image and the complete firmware package before modifying anything. Do not use a pre-patched image from an unknown poster when you can obtain and patch the matching stock file yourself. A wrong image or wrong slot can prevent startup.
Patch the stock image with Magisk
- Download and install the official Magisk APK. If Android blocks installation, temporarily allow the source under the relevant Install unknown apps setting; turn that permission off afterward.
- Copy the matching stock
boot.imgto the phone. - Open Magisk, tap Install, choose Select and Patch a File, and select that stock image.
- Let Magisk finish. The patched image is normally saved in
Downloadwith a name resemblingmagisk_patched_[random].img. Note the actual filename. - Check Magisk’s Ramdisk result and follow the matching branch in its current installation documentation. A device without a boot ramdisk may require the Magisk in Recovery procedure instead of the ordinary boot-image route.
Copy the patched image back to the computer, replacing the example name with the actual filename:

adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched_[random].imgChoose the correct flashing route
There is no safe universal flash command for all Android 8.1 phones. Android 8.0 introduced system-as-root changes, and partition layouts differ across devices. A/B slots, recovery-based installation and vendor-specific tools add further variation. Android describes these layouts in its system-as-root documentation and this AOSP background page.

Some guides may instruct you to boot an image temporarily with fastboot boot magisk_patched_[random].img before flashing. Others require a manufacturer utility or a different partition. Use such commands only when they are specified for your exact model, build and layout. TWRP, if relevant, must also be made for the particular device; its device-specific recovery guidance is not a universal image recipe.
Android 8.1’s verified-boot and integrity requirements are described in its compatibility definition. A modified image can lead to warnings or boot failure, but disabling verification or changing vbmeta is not a default fix: Magisk documents that as a device-dependent branch and warns of possible data loss.

Once the correct image has been installed by the device-specific method, reboot using the method that guide specifies. On a standard fastboot flow this may be:

fastboot rebootThe first boot can take longer than usual. Open Magisk and confirm that it reports an installed version. To test from a computer, run:
adb shell su -c idIf Magisk grants the shell request, a successful result includes uid=0. A root-checking app alone does not prove every root-dependent feature works.
Troubleshoot detection, unlocking and boot failures
fastboot devices shows nothing
- Confirm the phone is actually on its bootloader screen and try another cable or USB port.
- On Windows, install the correct manufacturer USB driver. On Linux, check USB permissions or udev rules.
- Run
fastboot --versionandfastboot devicesfrom the extracted Platform-Tools directory. - For ADB authorization issues, reconnect and accept the RSA prompt; if needed, revoke USB debugging authorizations on the phone and reconnect.
Unlocking is refused
Messages such as Flashing Unlock is not allowed or Command not allowed can indicate OEM unlocking is disabled, a carrier restriction applies, the model needs an unlock token, or the bootloader does not support the requested command. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for the exact variant; do not keep retrying destructive commands.
The phone bootloops after flashing
- Use the model’s hardware-key combination to return to bootloader or recovery.
- Restore the untouched stock boot image for the exact installed build using the device’s documented procedure.
- If that does not restore startup, use the manufacturer’s complete stock-firmware or unbrick procedure.
- Wipe data only if the recovery instructions require it and you already have a backup.
A recovery environment may restore a modified image, and a verification problem may cause repeated boot failures, encryption prompts or a warning that device software cannot be checked. Do not reach for a generic recovery image: TWRP itself notes that recovery images must be built or obtained for the specific device.

Magisk is installed, but root requests fail
Confirm you installed the official app, approved the root request, patched the exact current stock image, and flashed the partition or active slot actually used at startup. Another boot-image modification or a different slot can interfere. Magisk’s installation guide advises removing other boot-image modifications and starting from stock boot or a non-pre-rooted ROM.
Updates or apps stop working as expected
Rooted devices may need the stock boot image restored or a device-specific update procedure before accepting an OTA; do not assume updates will continue unchanged. An unlocked bootloader or modified boot state can also affect banking, streaming, work and game apps, device certification, or DRM. Behavior depends on the app, device, build and current integrity policy, and Magisk cannot be relied on to hide root from every app.
Weigh the benefits against the cost
Root can enable root-only backup and automation tools, system-level customization, some kernel or interface modifications, and certain modules. The trade-offs include the unlock wipe, soft-brick risk, weaker security if a malicious app receives root, possible warranty or service implications that vary by jurisdiction and manufacturer, update friction, possible loss of DRM or certification features, and permanent security-fuse changes on some brands. Modern Huawei devices without an available bootloader unlock, for example, do not have an official Magisk route described in Magisk’s installation guidance.

If you want to proceed, first verify that your exact model has an official unlock path and a reliable stock-firmware recovery route. For model-specific help, provide the manufacturer, exact model, build number, carrier or region, and current bootloader status; without those details, no flash instruction can be made reliably device-specific.
