Start with the smallest safe fix. If a recent plugin, theme, code change or update caused the failure, isolate that component first. For an eligible fatal PHP error, WordPress Recovery Mode can let an administrator sign in and pause the faulty component. If the dashboard is unavailable, rename the suspected plugin’s folder through FTP or your host’s file manager. A true rollback requires a coordinated backup of both site files and the database; WordPress’s typical restore order is files first, then the database.
Identify what changed before restoring anything
Write down the last successful time and the event immediately before the break:
- WordPress core update
- Plugin or theme installation, update or auto-update
- Custom PHP, JavaScript or configuration change
- Hosting, PHP-version or database change
An error email that names one plugin or theme is a reason to troubleshoot that component rather than overwrite the entire site. A full restore is appropriate when the cause is unclear, several components are affected, or targeted fixes fail.
Use Recovery Mode for an eligible fatal PHP error
Recovery Mode, introduced in WordPress 5.2, is a temporary troubleshooting session for some fatal PHP errors that occur during normal page loads. It is not a saved previous version and does not cover every background task or cron failure. See the official Recovery Mode guide.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open the Recovery Mode email sent to the site administrator and follow its special login link.
- Read the error notice to identify the plugin or theme involved.
- Deactivate, update or otherwise fix that component while in the session.
- Visit the public site and key administrator screens in a normal browser session.
- Only exit Recovery Mode after the site works normally; then investigate a compatible replacement or corrected version.
If no Recovery Mode email arrives, the error may not qualify, mail delivery may be failing, or the problem may be outside regular page loads. Continue with filesystem troubleshooting or contact the host.
When the dashboard is unreachable, disable a suspected plugin from the filesystem
WordPress documents a temporary fallback for plugin failures: use FTP or the host’s file manager to rename the suspected plugin directory. A common location is wp-content/plugins/; change only the folder belonging to the suspected plugin, for example by adding -disabled to its name.

- Open FTP or your hosting file manager and locate the site’s
wp-content/plugins/directory. - Rename the suspected plugin folder.
- Reload the site and, if possible,
/wp-admin/. - If the site recovers, leave the plugin disabled while checking its support notes, compatibility and error logs.
- Restore the original folder name only after you have isolated the cause and have a safe fix; renaming is diagnosis, not a permanent rollback.
Do not edit or delete files you cannot identify. Ask the hosting provider to perform the rename if you are not comfortable working on server files. The documented procedure is described in WordPress’s troubleshooting FAQ and Recovery Mode documentation.

A complete WordPress recovery point contains both the database and the site files. The database holds posts, pages, settings and other content; the files contain WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads and configuration. A database export by itself cannot recreate the complete site.

Compare the recovery paths
| Situation | First choice | What it changes | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| One plugin or theme causes a fatal error and Recovery Mode works | Use Recovery Mode | Pauses or fixes the identified component for troubleshooting | Administrator Recovery Mode email and login access |
| Dashboard unavailable, suspected plugin | Rename its folder via FTP or file manager | Temporarily prevents that plugin from loading | Safe filesystem access or host assistance |
| Several components fail or targeted fixes fail | Restore a coordinated backup | Replaces current files and database with the backup state | Both file and database backups plus restore access |
| Core update leaves the site broken | Restore a backup and use the previous release files as WordPress documents | Returns core files and database to a known working point | A compatible backup and the official update procedure |
Restore files first, then import the database
WordPress’s backup handbook gives this typical order. Exact screens and commands vary by host and backup product, so follow that provider’s documented procedure.
- Put the site in maintenance mode or otherwise prevent visitors from writing new data during the operation.
- Back up the currently broken state if storage and time allow; it may be needed for investigation.
- Restore the backup’s WordPress files, including core files,
wp-contentand the relevant configuration. - Import or restore the matching database backup after the files are in place.
- Check the site URL, database credentials, file permissions and required PHP version if the host reports an environment error.
- Test the public homepage, representative posts or pages, forms, media, logins and administrator screens.
Restoring replaces the current site state. Content created after the backup may not exist in the restored database. The cited guidance specifies the sequence but does not quantify the possible data-loss window. See Backups and Backing Up Your Database.

Rolling back a failed WordPress core update
For a core-upgrade failure, WordPress’s updating guide says to restore a backup and replace files with those from the previous release as needed. Treat the older release as a recovery step, not a permanent security strategy: once the site is stable, identify the compatibility problem and plan a supported update.
Do not confuse this with WordPress’s built-in rollback behavior for plugins and themes. The documented feature added in WordPress 6.3 is scoped to failed manual plugin and theme updates; it is not a general undo button for an update that completed successfully. Details are in the WordPress 6.3 developer note.
After the site is working again
- Test both an unauthenticated public visit and an administrator login.
- Check critical workflows such as publishing, contact forms, payments and media uploads.
- Review PHP and web-server logs for the original error.
- Create a fresh backup before retrying any update.
- Keep regular backups so a known-good recovery point exists; WordPress recommends backing up before upgrades. Its plugin and theme auto-update controls were introduced in WordPress 5.5, so review those settings rather than assuming every update is manually approved. See the plugin and theme auto-updates documentation.
Prevent the next emergency
Evaluate any backup method on four practical questions: does it capture both files and database, where is it stored, how is restoration performed, and can both parts be recovered together? An exported database can be stored alongside file archives on separate storage, including optional external storage, but the storage device itself does not create or restore a backup. WordPress’s backup guidance covers database exports and file backups at Backing Up Your Database and Backups.
