Reverse tethering sends your computer’s internet connection to an Android phone or tablet. The most practical no-root USB method is Gnirehtet, which uses ADB and Android’s VPN service to carry device traffic through a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC. You’ll need a data-capable USB cable, USB debugging, and permission to install the Android client and create a VPN. If your PC can make a Wi-Fi hotspot, that is usually easier.
One important distinction: Android’s built-in USB tethering normally shares the phone’s mobile connection with the computer—the opposite direction.
Quick setup
- Install Google’s SDK Platform-Tools to get ADB.
- Enable USB debugging on Android and connect it to the computer with a data-capable cable.
- Unlock the device and approve the computer’s USB debugging prompt.
- Download and extract the appropriate Gnirehtet package from the official project repository.
- Run
adb devicesto check the connection. - Run Gnirehtet and approve its Android VPN request.
Keep the Gnirehtet process running while you use the connection. The PC must remain online.

What reverse tethering does
With ordinary tethering, Android shares its mobile data outward to a computer. With reverse tethering, the flow is PC to Android: the computer’s Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or other internet connection is relayed to the Android device. Gnirehtet does this over USB using ADB; Android traffic passes through a VPN-based tunnel rather than turning the phone into a USB network adapter.

Android’s standard USB tethering instructions describe sharing the phone’s connection with another device, not a universal PC-to-phone USB setting. Some manufacturers or custom Android builds may offer additional network options, but their names and availability vary.
Before you start
- Android: Gnirehtet documents support for Android 5.0 (API 21) and later. Device, ROM, management-policy, and VPN compatibility can still vary.
- Computer: Windows, macOS, or GNU/Linux, with working internet access.
- USB: A data-capable cable and port; a charge-only cable will not work.
- ADB: Install Google’s official Platform-Tools, rather than an unofficial repackaged download. Full Android Studio is unnecessary for this task.
- Android permissions: Developer options and USB debugging must be enabled. You must also approve Gnirehtet’s VPN request and allow its client to be installed.
- Linux access: Your account may need USB-device permissions or distribution-specific ADB rules.
USB debugging gives an authorized computer significant control over your device through ADB. Only authorize a computer you trust. When finished on a shared or unfamiliar PC, stop the tunnel and consider revoking that computer’s debugging authorization.
Enable USB debugging and verify ADB
- On Android, open Settings, then About phone or About tablet.
- Find Build number and tap it repeatedly—typically seven times—until Android confirms Developer options are enabled. The exact path can vary by manufacturer.
- Return to Settings and open System > Developer options, or search Settings for “Developer options.” Turn on USB debugging.
- Connect the unlocked Android device to the PC. If prompted, choose a USB mode that permits data transfer.
- Accept the Android dialog asking whether to allow USB debugging from this computer. Select the always-allow option only for a computer you trust.
- Open a terminal or command prompt where ADB is available and run:
adb devicesA connected, authorized device should appear under “List of devices attached” with the status device. If it says unauthorized, unlock Android and accept the RSA authorization prompt. If the list is empty, see troubleshooting.
Run Gnirehtet
Download the package for your operating system from the Genymobile Gnirehtet repository. The repository currently lists version 2.5.1 and says the project is not actively maintained apart from major blockers and build issues. Use the Rust implementation where available; it avoids the Java dependency and is the project’s preferred implementation. Check the release notes and checksums on the official project page, and use files from the same release.
Windows
- Extract the Windows Rust package.
- Download Google’s Windows Platform-Tools. If ADB is not already available on your system, put
adb.exe,AdbWinApi.dll, andAdbWinUsbApi.dllin the Gnirehtet folder. - Connect and unlock the device, enable USB debugging, and approve the RSA prompt.
- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt in the Gnirehtet folder. Check the device:

.To avoid ambiguity, the intended command is .—replace the character shown as “” with gnirehtet.exe run if your package extraction differs.
When Gnirehtet is running, approve the Android prompt to create a VPN connection. Leave the terminal open; press Ctrl+C to stop simple mode. The project’s Windows package also includes gnirehtet-run.cmd for a simple run.
macOS
- Install ADB from Google Platform-Tools or another established package source.
- Extract the Gnirehtet macOS package. The project’s listed Rust macOS archive is older than its Windows and Linux Rust packages, so check the repository’s release details rather than assuming identical package versions across platforms.
- Connect the device, enable USB debugging, unlock it, and authorize the Mac.
- In Terminal, change to the extracted Gnirehtet directory and check ADB:
adb devicesThen start Gnirehtet:
./gnirehtet runApprove the VPN request on Android. Google’s note that its ordinary USB-tethering workflow does not work with a Mac concerns Android-to-computer tethering; it does not by itself rule out Gnirehtet’s separate ADB-based reverse-tethering method.
Linux
- Install ADB using Google Platform-Tools or your distribution’s package manager. Gnirehtet identifies
android-tools-adbas an ADB option on Debian-based distributions. - On Ubuntu, Google’s device setup documentation describes adding your account to
plugdevand installing Android USB rules:
sudo usermod -aG plugdev $LOGNAME
sudo apt-get install android-sdk-platform-tools-commonLog out and back in after changing group membership. Other distributions may have different rules or package names.

./gnirehtet runApprove the VPN request on Android. If you use Gnirehtet’s Java implementation instead of Rust, the project specifies Java 8; the Rust build avoids this requirement.
Confirm the connection and stop it
On first run, Android asks whether Gnirehtet may create a VPN connection. Approve it. A VPN/key indicator should appear while the tunnel is active. Try loading a normal HTTPS website in Android’s browser, then test the apps you need. Gnirehtet must remain running on the computer, and the PC must still have internet access.
For the simple run mode, press Ctrl+C in the terminal. If Android still shows a VPN connection, disconnect it from the VPN notification or Android’s VPN settings.
Advanced commands and multiple devices
The simple mode starts the relay, installs the client if needed, and starts the tunnel:
./gnirehtet runOn Windows, use gnirehtet.exe run from its folder. If more than one Android device is attached, identify devices with adb devices and specify the intended serial where supported by the installed build. Check local help with ./gnirehtet if command syntax differs.
The project also documents autorun for all connected devices and manual commands such as relay, install, start, stop, and tunnel. Manual mode starts the relay in one terminal, then installs and starts the client for a selected serial in another. After unplugging and reconnecting, the documented recovery command is:

Troubleshooting
adb devices shows no device
- Check that the cable and USB port support data, not just charging.
- Unlock Android and confirm USB debugging is on; select a data-capable USB mode if the device offers one.
- Try another cable or a direct PC port rather than a hub.
- On Windows, install the device manufacturer’s ADB USB driver if required. On Linux, check USB permissions and
udevrules. - Confirm ADB runs, then restart its server:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devicesThe device is listed as unauthorized
Unlock the screen and accept the USB debugging RSA prompt. If it does not return, open Developer options and select Revoke USB debugging authorizations, disconnect and reconnect, then approve the new prompt. Restart ADB if needed.
Gnirehtet cannot install its Android client
First make sure ADB reports the device as device. Check that Android is API 21 or later, storage is available, and the executable and APK came from the same release. A device-management policy may block APK installation or VPN apps. Remove an obsolete or conflicting Gnirehtet installation only if appropriate for your setup.
No VPN prompt, or Android will not allow it
Gnirehtet needs Android’s VPN permission. Accept the request when it appears; if necessary, stop and restart the tunnel. Temporarily disconnect another VPN and check whether a work profile or administrator policy blocks VPN use. Do not assume every app will behave like it does on ordinary Wi-Fi.
The tunnel runs but Android has no internet
- Confirm the terminal is still running and Android shows the VPN indicator.
- Check that the PC itself can reach the internet, including through any sign-in page or proxy required by its network.
- Check whether another VPN on the PC, a firewall, corporate filtering, or upstream network policy is interfering.
- Disconnect and reconnect the Android device, then restart Gnirehtet.
- If only some apps fail, consider IPv6, DNS, app-specific VPN restrictions, or apps bound to a particular interface.
It stopped after unplugging the cable
Reconnect the device and run ./gnirehtet tunnel SERIAL (or the equivalent executable command on Windows). If that does not restore the connection, restart the simple run command and accept any Android prompt that reappears.

Run adb devices, identify the serial for the intended phone or tablet, and pass it to Gnirehtet when the installed command supports a serial argument. Avoid all-device modes unless you intend to share the tunnel with every connected, authorized device.

Alternatives: hotspot, Ethernet, or Bluetooth
Use the PC as a Wi-Fi hotspot
If the PC’s Wi-Fi adapter supports hotspot sharing, this is generally the simpler option: turn on the computer’s mobile hotspot or internet sharing, then connect Android to that Wi-Fi network. Labels and steps vary by Windows, macOS, Linux distribution, and edition. This is wireless sharing, not USB reverse tethering; it avoids ADB and Android VPN setup, but depends on compatible Wi-Fi hardware and may be restricted by workplace policy or drivers.
A PC that receives internet over Wi-Fi may or may not be able to create a hotspot at the same time; this depends on the adapter, drivers, and operating system. A USB Wi-Fi adapter can help with some desktops, but it does not resolve policy or driver limits.
Connect Android to Ethernet
A USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter can connect a compatible Android phone or tablet directly to a router or switch. This is a different topology from using the PC’s connection; it requires Android USB-host/Ethernet support and may need extra power. It does not automatically route the PC’s internet to Android unless the PC is separately configured as a bridge or router.

Bluetooth tethering is mainly designed to share Android’s connection outward, not to provide a straightforward PC-to-Android reverse tunnel. For this use, USB Gnirehtet or a PC hotspot is generally the more direct choice.
Limits and security to consider
Gnirehtet documents TCP and UDP over IPv4 and does not support IPv6. As a result, IPv6-only destinations or apps that depend on particular network behavior may fail, even if a browser can load other sites. VPN-based routing can also interact with app restrictions, DNS, firewalls, captive portals, proxies, or management policies. The PC’s network restrictions are not automatically bypassed.
Gnirehtet installs an Android client and uses Android’s VPN framework; USB debugging authorizes ADB control from the PC. Download only from the official Genymobile repository and verify release checksums where practical. Stop the tunnel and revoke the PC’s USB debugging authorization when you no longer trust or need it.
