Short answer: You can usually retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages only if they still exist in a backup or another copy. A backup made before deletion may contain them; one made afterward may preserve the deleted state. Without a backup or surviving copy, WhatsApp offers no general-purpose trash folder or user-accessible server archive for restoring deleted chats. Before reinstalling or backing up, check the backup date: restoring an older backup can make newer messages unavailable.
First, identify what was deleted
The right option depends on whether you deleted a message, a whole conversation, or lost chat history while changing phones.
- Delete for me: This removes your copy. The other participant may still have the message and can forward it, copy it, send a screenshot, or export the chat.
- Delete for everyone: There is no dependable official way to put the message back. You may find a notification preview or a copy on another device, but neither restores it to the chat.
- Deleted chat or cleared chat: A WhatsApp backup created before the deletion may contain the conversation. Clearing a chat and deleting it are different actions, but both can leave you needing a backup or another copy.
- Uninstalled WhatsApp or changed phones: The history may be recoverable if you restore or transfer it using the right account, number, and process. A move to another phone is not itself a recovery of messages that were already deleted.
- Disappearing message: It may have expired before a backup was made. Check for a saved media file, screenshot, quoted reply, export, or another participant’s copy rather than assuming a backup will bring it back.
- Missing media but visible text: Photos, videos, documents, and voice notes may have separate copies in your gallery, Files app, cloud photo library, or another participant’s phone.
Check the backup date before changing anything
Do this before uninstalling WhatsApp, clearing app data, or tapping Back up now. A backup is useful for recovery only if it predates the deletion and still contains the message. A newer backup may have captured the chat after the deletion. WhatsApp’s instructions for backups and restoration are in its chat-backup guide and restore guide.
Android
In WhatsApp, open Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Check the last backup date and time, the Google Account shown, and whether videos were included if the missing item is a video. Menu labels can vary by app version and device. Do not create a new backup until you understand whether it could replace a useful older backup.

iPhone
In WhatsApp, open Settings → Chats → Chat Backup and check the last backup date. You will generally need the same Apple Account and iCloud environment used for the WhatsApp backup. Apple’s iPhone backup guide describes device backups, but a general iPhone backup should not be treated as a guarantee that WhatsApp chats can be restored; follow WhatsApp’s own chat-backup and restore flow.
Restore a WhatsApp backup
Restoring is the main supported way to bring back chat history, but it is not a selective undelete button. It restores the history represented by the available backup and may replace or make unavailable newer messages on the phone. If you need newer conversations, save or export important ones first where possible. Never proceed until you have checked the backup date and are willing to accept that trade-off.
- Confirm the backup predates the deletion and is associated with the account you can access.
- Make sure you can verify the same WhatsApp phone number and sign in to the relevant Google Account or Apple Account.
- If a backup is end-to-end encrypted, make sure you have its required password, passkey, or recovery key.
- Reinstall WhatsApp from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Open WhatsApp and verify the same phone number.
- When WhatsApp detects the backup, follow the prompt to restore chat history. Do not choose to skip restoration if this is the backup you need.
- Allow chat history and any included media to finish restoring, then check the relevant conversation.
Exact prompts can change by app version. If no backup is detected or restoration fails, consult WhatsApp’s backup and restore troubleshooting guide before trying risky workarounds.

Check other places where a copy may remain
Before restoring an older backup, look for a surviving copy that will not disturb your current chat history:
- An old phone that still has WhatsApp and its chat data
- A linked phone, tablet, WhatsApp Web session, or desktop installation that still shows the conversation
- The other participant’s chat, especially after Delete for me
- A chat export saved to email, cloud storage, or a computer
- Saved attachments in Photos, Gallery, Files, Downloads, Google Photos, iCloud Photos, or a shared album
Do not wipe or trade in an old phone until you have confirmed that the history you need is present on the new one. A visible notification preview is only a partial copy, not a restored WhatsApp conversation.
Android: check notification history for a preview
On some Android phones, notification history may show text from a WhatsApp notification, including a recently dismissed one. Look under Settings → Notifications → Notification history. The exact route varies, and some devices do not offer the feature; see Google’s notification guidance.

This can only help if the relevant notification was recorded. It may show a short preview rather than the full message, and it generally will not reconstruct a chat or recover media, stickers, or voice notes. Treat it as a way to read a notification that survived—not as WhatsApp message recovery. Anyone with access to the phone may also be able to see sensitive notification content.

Some Android installations may have local WhatsApp database backups, but their availability and location depend on the phone, Android and WhatsApp versions, storage behavior, and whether files were deleted or overwritten. Do not assume that a particular folder or backup file exists on every device.
If you are comfortable handling files, first make a separate copy of any potentially relevant database files before moving, renaming, or restoring anything. Preserve the original, check file dates, and understand that restoring an older local database can also cost you newer messages. If the files are encrypted or inaccessible and you do not have the required credentials, stop rather than handing keys to an unverified service. Deleted for everyone and disappearing messages
When a sender uses Delete for everyone, do not count on restoring the message from WhatsApp. A backup could help only in limited circumstances: it must predate the deletion, remain available, and still contain the earlier chat state. Even then, a restore may replace newer history, and the result is not guaranteed. Check another participant’s copy or, on a supported Android device, notification history for a preview.
Disappearing messages are designed to vanish after a chosen period. A normal backup is not a reliable way to defeat that behavior; whether anything remains depends on what was retained elsewhere. WhatsApp explains the feature in its disappearing-messages help page.

WhatsApp offers optional end-to-end encryption for chat backups stored through Google Drive or iCloud. If the backup requires a password, passkey, or recovery key, you need the required credential to restore it. Encryption is intended to protect the backup; do not assume WhatsApp or the cloud provider can bypass a missing key. Meta describes the feature in its announcement about encrypted backups. Never give an unknown recovery vendor your WhatsApp verification code, backup password, or encryption key.

Moving between Android and iPhone
A chat history missing on a new phone may not have transferred, rather than having been deleted. WhatsApp supports chat-transfer flows under certain device and software conditions, including transfers between platforms; the available process can change. Follow the current in-app instructions and complete the transfer before erasing the old phone. A transfer is not the same as restoring a cloud backup from one platform on the other, does not recover messages deleted before transfer, and does not generally merge conflicting histories. If WhatsApp cannot find or restore the backup
- Confirm that you are using the same phone number and the Google Account or Apple Account associated with the backup.
- On iPhone, check that iCloud is available and enabled for the relevant backup process; verify that the backup actually exists and is not newer than the deletion.
- Check that the backup was not deleted or replaced and that the correct WhatsApp account and app are being used.
- If encrypted backup is enabled, confirm that you have the required password, passkey, or recovery key.
- If you skipped the restore prompt on a fresh installation, avoid creating another backup until you know whether the original backup can still be used.
- If the phone was reset, also check for a separate computer backup, another device, exported chat, or separately saved media.
- Preserve possible local backup files rather than deleting or repeatedly overwriting them. For device or Android-version compatibility issues, consult the relevant Google Android backup guidance and WhatsApp’s restore troubleshooting.
If the only backup is newer than the deletion, it may no longer contain the missing content. If no earlier backup or other copy survives, recovery may not be possible.
Should you use a WhatsApp recovery app?
Be cautious. A recovery tool cannot recreate information that no longer exists on a device, backup, export, notification, or another person’s phone. A tool also cannot legitimately fetch a user-accessible historical archive from WhatsApp’s servers where no such recovery route is provided. Claims that a free scan proves a deleted message can be recovered are not proof that the data is available or that the tool can safely restore it.

Unverified apps or services can expose private conversations, request account credentials or encryption keys, or create additional risk by asking you to root or jailbreak a phone. Do not install an unofficial WhatsApp APK, share a verification code, or pay before you understand exactly what data the service can access and how it protects it. If you are considering forensic recovery for an important matter, stop using the affected device and seek a reputable specialist; continued use can overwrite data, and recovery is still not assured.

Reduce the chance of losing chats again
- Set a regular WhatsApp chat-backup schedule and periodically check that a recent backup completed.
- Know which Google Account or Apple Account holds the backup and keep access to it.
- If you use end-to-end encrypted backups, store the required password, passkey, or recovery key somewhere secure and private.
- Export irreplaceable conversations when appropriate and save essential attachments separately.
- When changing phones, keep the old device intact until the transfer is complete and you have checked that important chats and media arrived.
