If the Camera icon has vanished from your iPhone or iPad Home Screen, it is usually hidden on another page, removed from the Home Screen but still in App Library, or blocked by a restriction—not simply lost. Start by searching for Camera; that tells you whether you need to restore its icon or change a restriction.
1. Search for Camera first
Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen and type Camera. Tap the result to check whether the app opens. If Search finds it, the app is present; its icon may be on another page, in App Library, or affected by a temporary display issue.
You can also open App Library. On iPhone, swipe left past your Home Screen pages. On iPad, swipe left through the pages or tap the App Library button at the right side of the Dock. Search for Camera or browse the alphabetical app list. Apple explains how App Library works on iPhone and iPad.
2. Put Camera back on the Home Screen
If Camera appears in App Library, touch and hold its icon, then drag it toward the left to a Home Screen page and release it where you want it. On iPad, tap Done if that control appears. This restores the shortcut without changing the rest of your layout. If you only need to open the app while troubleshooting, launch it from Search or App Library.

3. Check for a hidden Home Screen page
A page can be hidden without deleting the apps on it. To show it again:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Tap the row of dots near the bottom of the screen.
- Look for a page without a checkmark and tap the circle beneath it.
- Tap Done.
If Camera was on that page, it should be visible again. Hidden-page apps also remain accessible in App Library. See Apple’s Home Screen and App Library guidance if the controls look different on your software version.

4. If Search cannot find Camera, check Screen Time
Screen Time restrictions can disable Camera and make its icon disappear. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, then look for Allowed Apps or Allowed Apps & Features and make sure Camera is enabled. Menu names can vary by iOS or iPadOS version and account setup. Apple describes how Screen Time can manage a child’s device and how parental controls restrict apps and features.
If a parent or guardian set a Screen Time passcode, you may need them to change the setting. With Family Sharing, a parent can manage a child’s Screen Time settings from their own Apple device. Don’t try to bypass a restriction that was intentionally set.

5. Check whether the device is managed by work or school
An organization can use device management to disable the camera. Apple documents an allowCamera restriction that removes the Camera icon and prevents photography. Clues include a notice in Settings that the iPhone or iPad is supervised and managed, or a Camera icon that remains absent even though you cannot change the relevant restriction yourself. If the device belongs to a school, employer, or other organization, contact its IT administrator. The restriction may be part of policy; erasing the device or removing management yourself is not the right fix.

6. Reset the Home Screen layout only if needed
If Camera exists but the Home Screen arrangement seems stuck, resetting that arrangement is a non-destructive option. It does not erase photos, messages, or other personal data, but it removes folders you created and rearranges downloaded apps alphabetically after built-in apps.

- iPhone: Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout, then confirm Reset Home Screen.
- iPad: Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.
This resets icon organization, not the operating system. Do not choose “Erase All Content and Settings” for a missing icon; that separate operation erases the device. Apple’s instructions cover the iPhone and iPad layout reset.

If you mean a different camera icon
The Home Screen app icon, a Lock Screen camera shortcut, and camera access inside another app are separate things:
- Only the Lock Screen shortcut is missing: If Camera opens from Search or App Library, the app is still there. Troubleshoot the Lock Screen customization rather than resetting the Home Screen; controls can vary by software version and device configuration.
- Another app cannot use the camera: If Apple’s Camera app opens normally but an app such as FaceTime or Instagram cannot access the camera, check that app’s privacy permissions and any Screen Time restrictions. That is an access-permission problem, not a missing Camera icon.
When to get help
If Camera is absent from Search and App Library, Screen Time does not explain it, the device is not managed, and resetting the Home Screen layout does not help, restart the device and install available software updates. Contact Apple Support if the icon remains missing, Camera crashes, or the camera hardware also fails. A full device restore is disproportionate for an icon-placement issue; consider one only with appropriate backup and Apple Support guidance.
