You can reply to an incoming iPhone call with a text without answering it: tap the call banner, choose Message, then select a preset response or Custom. You can edit those preset replies at Settings → Apps → Phone → Respond with Text on current iPhone software.
However, these call replies are not automatic. iPhone does not include a general setting that texts every caller for you. Its built-in automatic reply feature, Driving Focus Auto-Reply, responds to incoming messages—not ordinary phone calls.
Send a text instead of answering an iPhone call
- When the call arrives, tap the incoming-call banner if the controls are not already visible.
- Tap Message.
- Choose one of the preset responses, or tap Custom to write a one-time message.
- If you choose Custom, type your reply and send it.
Choosing a message declines the call. Under normal conditions, the caller is sent to voicemail, although Apple notes that a declined call may be disconnected instead in some countries or regions. Carrier settings and voicemail availability can also affect what happens.

Change the preset call-reply messages
To replace the canned responses shown when a call arrives:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Phone.
- Tap Respond with Text.
- Tap any response under Respond With and enter your preferred wording.
Older iOS versions may show the shorter path Settings → Phone → Respond with Text. The current Apple guide places Phone inside the Apps section.

Useful preset wording
- “I can’t talk right now. I’ll call you back soon.”
- “I’m in a meeting. Can I call you later?”
- “I’m driving. Please text me instead.”
- “I’m unavailable until 3 p.m.”
- “Is this urgent? Please leave a voicemail.”
Avoid including your exact location, travel plans, confidential work information, or details that reveal when your home is unattended.
Send a one-time custom response
You do not need to edit a saved preset for every unusual situation. During the call, tap Message → Custom, write the response, and send it. This is useful when the caller needs a specific instruction, such as “Please text me the address” or “I can talk after 4:30.”

Can iPhone automatically text every caller?
No—not with the standard Respond with Text feature. That feature is interactive: you must choose a reply while the phone is ringing. There is no general built-in Phone setting that automatically sends a text whenever any person calls.

The normal call feature is a manual response, even though it lets you answer quickly with a prepared message.
Use Driving Focus for automatic messaging replies
Driving Focus is the closest built-in option to a true automatic reply. It can send a customized message when selected people message you while Driving Focus is active. It is not a universal automatic reply for incoming phone calls.
Set up Driving Focus Auto-Reply
- Open Settings.
- Tap Focus.
- Tap Driving.
- Tap Auto-Reply.
- Choose an audience, such as No One, Recents, Favorites, or All Contacts.
- Edit the automatic message if needed.
Depending on the selected settings, favorites and people permitted to send notifications may be able to receive the auto-reply. Choose the audience carefully: a broad setting can send your message to more people than intended.

When Driving Focus turns on
Apple supports several activation methods:
- Automatically when iPhone detects that you may be driving
- When connected to your car’s Bluetooth system
- Manually
- When connected to CarPlay
Driving Focus is designed to reduce distractions and limit notifications while driving. Apple also documents an exception in which a contact can send another message containing “urgent” to notify you. That exception applies to messaging; it does not create a way to bypass phone-call handling or automatically answer calls.
Configure Focus before you start driving. Do not handle the iPhone to change settings or type replies while the vehicle is moving, and follow local distracted-driving laws.

Respond without typing on the screen
If you need more information before deciding whether to answer, some incoming-call situations offer Type to Reply. Tap that option, type a question or request, and send it to the caller. The caller’s response may appear as text on your iPhone.

Type to Reply is different from a preset Respond with Text message: it is an interactive exchange rather than a generic canned response.
Siri, CarPlay, your vehicle’s Bluetooth system, or a compatible hands-free accessory may provide safer ways to manage calls and messages. Availability depends on the device, vehicle, software, and settings. Hands-free operation does not remove the need to obey local driving rules or maintain attention on the road.

If you cannot find Message or Respond with Text, check these possibilities:
- Different call layout: A locked-screen full-screen alert and an unlocked banner may expose different controls. Tap the banner or reveal the incoming-call controls.
- Different iOS menu: On newer software, look under Settings → Apps → Phone → Respond with Text. Older versions may place Phone directly in Settings.
- Unsupported call type: A call from a third-party calling app may not provide the same controls as Apple’s Phone app. Alternative default calling apps must support relevant features themselves.
- The call changed state: If it has already been silenced, declined, answered, or ended, the response controls may no longer be available.
- Regional or carrier behavior: Voicemail and declined-call handling can vary by country, region, and carrier.

If the text reply does not appear to send
- Check cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Confirm that the intended recipient can receive text messages.
- Open the relevant conversation in Messages and check whether the message appears.
- Confirm that the incoming call was declined rather than merely silenced.
- Check whether the problem affects one caller or every caller.
A call-response text is not a guaranteed substitute for voicemail. Delivery can depend on messaging connectivity, carrier support, and the recipient’s ability to receive texts, and the caller may not see it immediately.

FAQ
Does replying by text reject the call?
Yes. Choosing a Respond with Text message declines the incoming call. It normally goes to voicemail, but regional or carrier behavior can differ.
Can I automatically text unknown callers?
Not with the standard iPhone Phone feature. It requires you to select a response manually. Driving Focus Auto-Reply can message selected contacts when they send you a message, but it is not an automatic phone-call response.
Does this work with FaceTime or every third-party calling app?
Not necessarily. The controls described here are for the iPhone’s supported incoming-call interface. Third-party calling apps may expose different options and must support relevant iPhone calling features themselves.
