Use a source image large enough for the biggest layout you support, then let CSS control how it is rendered. For a background that must fill its container, set background-size: cover; it preserves the image’s proportions but crops whichever edges do not fit the container’s aspect ratio. Use contain when the entire image must remain visible, and inspect both wide and narrow layouts because no single pixel size works for every website.
What “resize for a background” actually means
A background image has two separate sizes:
- Source dimensions: the pixel width and height of the file you serve.
- Rendered dimensions: the size CSS gives the image inside a particular element and viewport.
CSS can scale a source up or down, but it cannot preserve detail that was never captured. Choose a source large enough for the largest intended display, then use CSS sizing and positioning to control the result. The required dimensions depend on the element’s size, its aspect ratio, display density and the viewport range you support—not on a universal “website background” number.
Choose the right sizing behavior

MDN’s guidance on background-size defines cover as scaling until both dimensions cover the box while preserving the source ratio. That is why a wide image can lose its left and right edges in a tall mobile hero. contain scales until the whole image fits; set background-repeat: no-repeat or the remaining area may tile.

Baseline CSS that fills a section

background-position decides which part survives the crop. center is only a starting point. If a person’s face is near the top, try center top; if the subject is on the right, try 70% center. Verify the focal point at every breakpoint rather than assuming one position works everywhere.

How to calculate a practical source size
- Measure the largest rendered box. Include the maximum content width and height your design can produce, not just the default desktop screenshot.
- Account for the image’s ratio. A source that is much wider than the box will crop more under
cover; a source with a similar ratio wastes fewer pixels. - Allow for high-density displays. Retina and other device-pixel-ratio screens can display more source detail. Do not upscale a small file and expect it to become sharp.
- Keep a safe area. Leave margin around text, faces and logos because responsive crops can remove edges.
- Inspect real breakpoints. Test the largest desktop, a tablet width and the narrowest phone layout you support. Change
background-positionor provide another asset when the subject no longer fits.
For example, a banner that is approximately 1,440 CSS pixels wide on desktop but becomes a tall, narrow block on phones needs a composition that survives both crops. A single 1,440-pixel-wide image may be technically usable, yet a phone-specific portrait asset can preserve the subject and avoid downloading unnecessary pixels.
Serve different background files responsively
Media queries can select a smaller or differently composed source so narrow screens do not have to fetch the desktop image. This is the approach described by web.dev for optimizing CSS background images.

Put the mobile rule first, then override it at the breakpoint. The files can have different aspect ratios and crops; they do not need to be resized versions of one another. Compress each file appropriately, retain enough quality for its largest rendered use, and confirm that the browser requests the expected asset in developer tools.

CSS backgrounds are appropriate for decoration, such as a texture or a hero photograph behind text. If the picture communicates information, represents a product, or is essential to understanding the page, use an HTML <img> instead. MDN’s responsive-images guidance covers srcset and sizes so the browser can choose a suitable file, and it gives decorative header imagery as a CSS-background use case.

An img can have meaningful alternative text, participate in intrinsic sizing and be lazy-loaded when appropriate. Do not hide a meaningful image in a background merely to obtain a convenient crop.

Prepare and export the source file
- Crop during design. Make the desktop and mobile compositions intentional rather than relying on accidental edge loss.
- Choose a web format. WebP is used in the examples; JPEG or another supported format may suit photographic content. Keep a fallback if your browser support policy requires one.
- Remove unnecessary metadata. It adds bytes without improving the rendered background.
- Do not enlarge a small original. Upscaling creates softness; obtain or export a larger source instead.
- Check contrast. Overlay text, gradients or a darker alternate crop when the image makes content hard to read.
- Respect licensing and privacy. Resizing does not change image rights or remove sensitive content.
There is no evidence-based universal recommendation such as “always use 1920 pixels.” The correct file is the smallest one that remains sharp at your largest supported rendering and still works with your crop strategy.
Debug common background problems
The image is cropped on mobile
Cause: cover must fill a container whose ratio differs from the source. Fix: move the focal point with background-position, reduce the mobile section height, or select a mobile-specific asset with a more suitable composition.
Empty bands appear around the image
Cause: contain preserves the whole image and therefore may leave unused space. Fix: use cover if cropping is acceptable, or keep contain and style the surrounding background color. Always set background-repeat: no-repeat when tiling is not intended.
The background looks stretched
Cause: the image was forced into both dimensions independently, commonly through a fixed width and height on an image element. Fix: use background-size: cover or contain, both of which preserve proportions. Avoid manually setting unrelated width and height values that distort the source.

The subject disappears behind text
Cause: the focal point and content column compete for the same area. Fix: reposition the background, change the crop, add a gradient overlay, or create a variant with intentional negative space.
The file is sharp but the page is slow
Cause: the browser downloads a large desktop source even on a small viewport, or the file contains unnecessary bytes. Fix: use media-query-selected assets, compress each source, and inspect the network panel to verify that the intended file is fetched. Responsive selection can prevent smaller-screen visitors from downloading an unnecessarily large source.
The background does not appear at all
Check the URL, filename case, network response status and whether the element has height. A background on an empty element with no height has no visible area. Also check that a later shorthand declaration has not overwritten background-image.
A repeatable testing checklist
- Test the smallest and largest supported viewport widths.
- Test a high-density display or browser zoom to expose softness.
- Confirm the focal subject remains visible in every crop.
- Verify text contrast in both light and dark portions of the image.
- Use the network panel to confirm mobile assets are not unnecessarily replaced by desktop files.
- Test slow connections and cached visits; large backgrounds can delay visual completion even when layout is correct.
- Check keyboard and screen-reader experience when the image conveys meaning; switch to
imgif needed.

Can one background image support every screen?
It can, but it may crop badly or download more bytes than necessary. Separate sources selected with media queries are preferable when the composition or performance requirements differ substantially.
Is cover always better than contain?
No. Choose cover when complete coverage matters and cropping is acceptable; choose contain when every pixel must remain visible and empty space is acceptable.
