If WSUS shows updates as downloaded but their files are missing or damaged, the normal first action is the low-risk content reset—not an uninstall. Open an elevated PowerShell window on the WSUS server and run:

& "$env:ProgramFilesUpdate ServicesToolsWsusUtil.exe" reset

This reconciles SUSDB metadata with the WSUS content directory and redownloads missing files. It does not delete approvals, rebuild SUSDB, repair IIS, or reset client computers.

Choose the right meaning of “reset WSUS”

Symptom Correct action Relative risk
Updates are listed as downloaded, but files are missing Run wsusutil reset Low
EULA or update content will not download Check proxy, firewall and connectivity, then run reset Low
The content directory moved or uses the wrong path Correct configuration with postinstall or the appropriate content-move procedure Medium
Shared SUSDB or UNC content is misconfigured Correct SQL/content parameters and verify share and NTFS permissions Medium
Console is slow, cleanup times out or SUSDB is bloated Back up and maintain the database Medium
WSUS, IIS or the database role is broken Repair or rebuild only after documenting dependencies High
Only one computer fails to report Re-register that client instead of resetting the server Low
Configuration Manager software-update point fails Troubleshoot the SUP, WSUS and Configuration Manager logs together Variable

Microsoft defines reset as a metadata-to-content reconciliation operation, not a factory reset (Microsoft documentation).

Before running a reset

  • Use an elevated PowerShell or Command Prompt session on the actual WSUS server. The utility is installed on WSUS server machines, not merely on a computer with a management console (WSUS command-line documentation).
  • Back up SUSDB before database maintenance, post-installation changes or a rebuild.
  • Pause or avoid maintenance during an active synchronization, especially in a downstream hierarchy.
  • Confirm free space in the content volume; a reset can redownload a large amount of data.
  • Check that the Update Services service is running and that IIS and BITS are available.
  • Record the database and content configuration if WSUS uses remote SQL Server, Windows Internal Database (WID) or a shared UNC path.
Get-Service WsusService, W3SVC, BITS
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:SOFTWAREMicrosoftUpdate ServicesServerSetup' | Select-Object SqlServerName, ContentDir

In the registry output, ##SSEE or ##WID generally identifies Windows Internal Database; a server or instance name indicates SQL Server. Do not assume content is on the system drive.

  • 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Expand your network with 8 high-speed ethernet ports for enhanced connectivity and performance
  • Easy Smart Management: Manage and configure your network effortlessly via a web interface or free software
  • Support VLAN: Segment traffic with up to 32 VLANs simultaneously out of 4K VLAN IDs for better security
  • Network Monitoring: Monitor your network effectively with port mirroring, loop prevention, and cable diagnostics
  • IGMP Snooping: Enhances multicast application performance for improved network efficiency

Run the standard WSUS content reset

1. Open an elevated shell

Start Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt with Run as administrator.

2. Open the WSUS tools directory

Set-Location "$env:ProgramFilesUpdate ServicesTools"

3. Start reconciliation

.WsusUtil.exe reset

Alternatively, use the fully qualified PowerShell command shown above. Microsoft documents this operation for redownloading missing update files, including missing EULA content (synchronization troubleshooting).

4. Let it finish

Do not terminate the process just because the console appears idle. Runtime depends on the number of missing files, disk performance, network speed, proxy behavior and Microsoft Update connectivity. Older Microsoft guidance warns that WSUS can appear unresponsive for several minutes; current workloads can take substantially longer (Microsoft reset guidance).

5. Watch the log

Review C:Program FilesUpdate ServicesLogFilesSoftwareDistribution.log for download activity, HTTP errors, EULA failures and completion messages. In shared-SUSDB deployments, an entry such as State Machine Reset Agent Finished indicates that the reset state machine completed (shared database guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Run the health check

.WsusUtil.exe checkhealth

Then open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application. checkhealth writes its results to the Application event log.

  4. Verify that a test client reports, downloads and installs it.
  5. For Configuration Manager, review WCM.log, WSyncMgr.log and WSUSCtrl.log as applicable.

What wsusutil reset does—and does not do

It does

  • Compare SUSDB metadata with files in the local content store.
  • Identify missing or corrupted update files.
  • Redownload content absent from local storage.
  • Help after a database restore or content-storage failure.
  • Help with missing EULA files when network access is otherwise working.

It does not

  • Delete SUSDB or rebuild its schema.
  • Remove approvals, computer groups or synchronization settings.
  • Decline superseded updates or reindex the database.
  • Repair IIS virtual directories, SQL/WID connection settings or incorrect paths.
  • Fix DNS, proxy, firewall, certificate or ACL errors.
  • Reset Windows Update state on client computers.
  • Replace a damaged WSUS role installation.

If the reset does not fix WSUS

Missing content, EULA errors or failed downloads

Read SoftwareDistribution.log and verify that the server can reach Microsoft Update through its configured proxy and firewall. Check DNS and, where SSL is used, certificate validity and HTTPS configuration. A reset cannot repair an Internet-connectivity or TLS problem (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).

HTTP 404 errors

Check that the WSUS virtual directories and content path refer to the same location. In shared-content deployments, a local-path versus UNC-path mismatch commonly produces 404 responses (shared database guidance).

HTTP 401.3 errors

Inspect both share and NTFS permissions. Each WSUS front-end computer account needs Full Control on the shared WSUSContent directory at both levels when that topology is used.

Wrong content directory or SQL configuration

Use postinstall only when evidence shows that the database or content configuration is wrong. For example, a SQL-backed shared UNC deployment might use:

Set-Location "$env:ProgramFilesUpdate ServicesTools"
.WsusUtil.exe postinstall SQL_INSTANCE_NAME="SQLServer" CONTENT_DIR="\FileServerWSUS"

Replace both values with the actual deployment. Do not use this example unchanged for WID, local content or a different SQL instance. After correcting the configuration, run reset and validate health (Microsoft shared-SUSDB procedure).

Slow console, cleanup timeouts or a bloated SUSDB

This is a database-maintenance problem, not a content-reset problem. Microsoft’s general sequence is:

  1. Back up SUSDB.
  2. Create recommended indexes where applicable and reindex the database.
  3. Decline superseded or expired updates.
  4. Run the Server Cleanup Wizard.
  5. Reindex again after cleanup.

Long-neglected databases may require several cleanup passes. In a downstream hierarchy, clean the lowest downstream server first and move upward (maintenance guide). Cleanup can remove private-catalog update files, requiring reimport, and approved superseded updates may remain until their approval state is changed (Server Cleanup Wizard documentation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configuration Manager Software Update Point failures

Treat WSUS and the SUP as one system. Check the Configuration Manager console settings and the WCM, WSyncMgr and WSUSCtrl logs before changing WSUS independently. Configuration Manager manages or validates several WSUS settings; shared-SUSDB deployments also require correct master-server selection, paths and permissions.

When to reset a client instead

If only one or a few computers fail to report, the server may be healthy. On the affected Windows client, Microsoft’s re-registration sequence begins with:

gpupdate /force
wuauclt /detectnow

In rare cases, use:

wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow

Check the client’s Event Viewer and its computer status in WSUS (Microsoft client re-registration guidance). Do not clear SoftwareDistribution on every machine when the actual failure is server-wide.

When rebuilding WSUS is justified

Reinstalling the role with a fresh SUSDB is a last resort for an irreparably unhealthy or disproportionally costly installation. Before doing it, document products, classifications, languages, synchronization source, proxy, SSL, computer groups, approvals, content location and all downstream or Configuration Manager dependencies. Back up SUSDB and plan for the initial synchronization, high bandwidth and disk use, plus full or more expensive client scans against the new database. Uninstalling WSUS does not guarantee that approvals and configuration will be preserved (Microsoft maintenance guidance).

Should you replace WSUS?

Microsoft says WSUS remains supported for production deployments on Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025, but it is deprecated and receives no new features (WSUS overview). Repair it when you need local Microsoft content control, offline operation or existing Microsoft-native workflows. Consider another platform when you need mixed-platform or third-party application patching, SaaS operations, RMM, inventory or compliance reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wsusutil reset delete approvals?

No. It reconciles update metadata with the content store and redownloads missing files; approvals and computer groups remain.

Will the reset recreate SUSDB?

No. Recreating SUSDB requires a separate rebuild or reinstallation plan.

Can I run it during synchronization?

Avoid overlapping maintenance with synchronization. Wait for synchronization to finish, particularly in downstream or shared-database topologies.

What if WSUS uses WID?

The reset command is the same. Confirm the SqlServerName registry value and do not supply SQL-instance parameters intended for a remote SQL deployment.

How long will it take?

There is no dependable fixed duration. Missing-file count, storage, network, proxy and Microsoft Update access determine runtime.

What if content is on another drive or UNC share?

Verify ContentDir, path consistency, share permissions and NTFS permissions before running or repeating the reset.

When should I reinstall WSUS?

Only after backup, dependency documentation and a recovery plan show that repair and database maintenance are no longer practical.
