If you forgot the pattern on a modern Android tablet, the official way back in is usually to erase the tablet and set it up again. Before doing that, check for a supported exception: Android 4.4 or earlier may offer “Forgot pattern,” and some Samsung tablets on One UI 6.1 or later may let you use a previous PIN or password for 72 hours after changing the lock. A reset deletes internal data and may require the Google Account previously used on the tablet.
What “reset the pattern” can mean
Changing a screen lock is different from recovering a forgotten one. If you know the current pattern, PIN, or password, you can change the lock in Settings without a factory reset. If you cannot unlock a modern tablet, Google’s guidance is to erase it and create a new lock; its legacy “Forgot pattern” option applies to Android 4.4 or earlier. - Change the pattern: Requires the current credential and normally preserves the tablet’s data.
- Recover a forgotten pattern: Usually not available as a data-preserving option on modern Android.
- Factory reset: Erases internal accounts, apps, settings, and personal data, then returns the tablet to setup.
- Remote erase: Starts a factory reset from another device.
- Recovery reset: Starts a factory reset using the tablet’s hardware buttons and recovery menu.
Check for a way in before erasing
If fingerprint or face unlock still works
Unlock the tablet and back up anything important immediately. Then change the screen lock in Settings. A tablet may still require its primary pattern, PIN, or password after a restart or other security event, so do not rely on biometrics as a lasting substitute for the forgotten credential.
If the tablet is a supported Samsung with a recently changed lock
Samsung says some phones and tablets running One UI 6.1 or later can use a previous unlock method within 72 hours of changing the lock. After enough incorrect attempts, look for Forgot, tap it, and enter the previous PIN or password to set a new lock. This option is not available on every model or software build, and it may not appear if the previous credential was deleted. Samsung describes this exception in its Galaxy unlock support guidance.

If the tablet runs Android 4.4 or earlier
After repeated failed attempts, the lock screen may show Forgot pattern. If it does, follow the prompts to verify the Google Account previously used on the tablet and set a new lock. This is a legacy Android option, not a general solution for current tablets.
If the touchscreen is broken but you know the pattern
A USB mouse or keyboard connected through a compatible adapter may help operate a Samsung device so you can unlock and back it up. It does not bypass an unknown pattern; see Samsung’s support instructions for the device-specific guidance.

Before you factory-reset the tablet
A factory reset is destructive. Check what is backed up before proceeding: Google Photos, Drive, contacts, app data, Samsung Cloud, Smart Switch, and files stored elsewhere may each have different coverage. A Google Account on the tablet does not mean every photo, message, file, or app setting was backed up; Android’s reset guidance notes that some app data may not be included. Removable SD-card behavior also varies.
- Confirm the Google Account email address used on the tablet and verify that its password works by signing in on another device.
- For a Galaxy Tab, confirm the associated Samsung Account as well.
- Check whether important files are on removable storage and whether a backup exists.
- If the tablet belongs to a school, employer, or other organization, contact its administrator before resetting; management controls may restrict erasure or affect setup.
- Google recommends charging the device to at least 70%. Its guidance says a reset can take up to an hour, and a recently changed Google Account password may require a 24-hour wait before resetting. See Google’s factory-reset preparation guidance.
Plan for Factory Reset Protection (FRP). After a reset, Android may require a Google Account that was previously associated with the tablet. A reset does not remove this anti-theft check. If you cannot verify the account, pause rather than trying bypass tools.

Erase a generic Android tablet remotely with Google
Remote erase is convenient when the tablet is reachable, but it still wipes the device; it does not remove the pattern while preserving files. Google’s instructions use Find My Device / Find Hub. For the tablet to appear and receive the command, it generally needs to be powered on, connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, signed in to the correct Google Account, enabled for the finding service, and visible in Google Play. Requirements can vary by device and Android version.
- On another phone or computer, open android.com/find.
- Sign in with the Google Account used on the locked tablet.
- Select the correct tablet if more than one device is listed.
- Choose Erase device or Factory reset device, depending on the displayed label.
- Review the warning and confirm the erase.
- Wait for the tablet to receive the command and reset. During setup, sign in with the previously associated Google Account if asked.
If the tablet is powered off or offline, the erase may remain pending until it reconnects. It may also be unavailable because you are using the wrong account, the finding service was not enabled, the tablet is not visible in Google Play, or an organization blocks the action. Confirm those conditions before switching to the manufacturer’s recovery-reset instructions.

Erase a Samsung Galaxy Tab remotely
Samsung documents two remote erase routes for supported Galaxy devices. Either route wipes data; choose the account and service already associated with the tablet.
Use SmartThings Find
- Open findmymobile.samsung.com.
- Sign in with the Samsung Account associated with the tablet.
- Select the Galaxy Tab and choose Erase data.
- Verify the account if prompted, then confirm Erase.
- Set up the tablet again and provide the requested account credentials.
Samsung says the tablet must be powered on for SmartThings Find to locate it. See the Samsung unlock support page.

Use Google’s device-finding service
- Open android.com/find or google.com/android/find.
- Sign in with the Google Account used on the Galaxy Tab and select it.
- Choose Factory reset device, review the warning, and confirm the erase.
- During setup, use the previously associated Google Account if requested.
Samsung’s support instructions also describe this route and note that the device must be powered on.
Factory-reset through recovery mode
Use recovery mode if remote erase is unavailable or cannot reach the tablet. Button combinations vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, and hardware—for example, a physical Home button can change the sequence. Google recommends checking the manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming one combination works for every tablet. See Google’s reset guidance and Android’s reset examples.
- Find the exact model number, then open its manufacturer’s official support site and look for “factory reset recovery” or “forgot unlock code.” Lenovo’s forgotten Android-tablet unlock guidance, for example, says a factory reset is required but is not a universal button sequence.
- Turn the tablet off. If it will not respond, use the manufacturer’s documented force-restart method.
- Hold the model-specific power and volume buttons (or other specified controls) until the boot or recovery screen appears.
- Use the documented controls to highlight Recovery Mode and select it. If No command appears, use the manufacturer’s specified key sequence to show recovery options.
- Choose Wipe data/factory reset or the equivalent label, then confirm the wipe.
- Choose Reboot system now or the equivalent restart option.
- Complete setup and restore any available backups.
Those menu names are examples, not guaranteed labels. A wrong button combination may simply restart the tablet, open a different boot menu, or fail to enter recovery. For other brands, search the official support site using the brand, exact model number, and the phrase “forgot pattern” or “factory reset recovery.”

Set up the tablet after the reset
- Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data when setup asks.
- Verify the Google Account previously associated with the tablet if Android requests it. On a Galaxy Tab, provide the requested Samsung Account details too.
- Choose a backup to restore if one is offered. Restored content depends on what was backed up, the app, and the device’s software; some app data may not return.
- Create a new pattern, PIN, or password and store it somewhere secure, such as a password manager.
If setup or recovery gets stuck
- The tablet asks for an unfamiliar Google Account: Check old account addresses and ask the previous owner to remove their account if the tablet is secondhand. For a legitimate owner who cannot verify the account, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center with proof of purchase. Samsung directs owners who cannot remember account information to an authorized service center.
- The Google password was just changed: A 24-hour wait may be required before a reset; verify the account from another device and follow Google’s reset guidance.
- The remote erase is pending: Check power, network access, the account, and whether the tablet is listed in the relevant finding service.
- Recovery buttons do not work or “No command” appears: Recheck the exact model instructions rather than trying combinations from another tablet.
- The tablet is managed: Contact the school or workplace administrator, who may need to authorize the reset or complete setup.
Avoid paid “unlock” utilities, FRP-bypass videos, APKs, or unofficial flashing services. They are not official data-preserving recovery methods and can expose personal data, cause additional data loss, or circumvent anti-theft protections.
