For most PCs, resetting the BIOS or UEFI means restoring its setup defaults—not reinstalling Windows. Enter BIOS/UEFI Setup, choose Load Defaults, Load Optimized Defaults, or a similar option, then choose Save Changes and Exit, often with F10. This normally changes firmware settings only; it does not delete personal files or applications.

If you cannot enter the firmware menu, a desktop may need a model-specific Clear CMOS procedure. If you see a BIOS ROM or checksum error, you likely need BIOS recovery instead. These are different operations.

Choose the right kind of reset

Situation Use What it does
You changed a BIOS setting and the PC became unstable or would not boot Load BIOS/UEFI defaults Restores firmware configuration values
You cannot reach BIOS/UEFI or the PC will not POST Clear CMOS/RTC memory Removes stored firmware settings using a button, jumper, or battery procedure
You see a BIOS ROM, checksum, or failed-update error BIOS recovery Reloads or repairs firmware using the manufacturer’s recovery method
You want to reinstall Windows or remove everything Windows Reset this PC Reinstalls Windows and may remove applications, settings, or personal files

BIOS is the older term many people still use for the firmware setup environment. Modern PCs generally use UEFI, but manufacturers and support pages often still call the process a “BIOS reset.”

Before resetting

  • Save your work and shut down normally if possible.
  • Photograph or write down important settings, especially boot mode, storage-controller mode, fan profiles, virtualization, and memory profiles.
  • Find your BitLocker recovery key before changing TPM, Secure Boot, boot mode, or related firmware settings. Firmware changes can trigger BitLocker recovery.
  • Identify the exact PC or motherboard model before opening a desktop or clearing CMOS.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB drives and other removable boot media.
  • Do not update the BIOS merely because you want to restore its settings.

Microsoft’s guidance on UEFI, Secure Boot, and Windows explains why firmware changes may affect startup and recovery.

How to enter BIOS or UEFI

From Windows 11

If Windows still starts, use the built-in route instead of guessing a startup key:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Recovery.
  3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  4. Choose Troubleshoot.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select UEFI Firmware Settings, then Restart.

This option may not appear on every system. If it is missing, use the manufacturer’s startup key or consult the exact model’s support documentation.

During startup

Restart the PC and repeatedly press the setup key as soon as the manufacturer logo appears. Common keys include Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12, but the correct key varies by model. Dell commonly uses F2; other systems may use Delete, F10, or another key. Microsoft lists common keys in its UEFI and BIOS startup guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows starts too quickly, begin pressing the key earlier. A wired USB keyboard is often more reliable than a wireless keyboard during early startup. On a desktop, try a rear motherboard USB port and disconnect hubs or docks.

How to restore BIOS or UEFI defaults

  1. Enter BIOS/UEFI Setup.
  2. Find an option named Load Defaults, Load Optimized Defaults, Restore Defaults, Load Setup Defaults, Factory Defaults, or Reset to Default.
  3. Confirm the operation.
  4. Review the settings if the firmware interface allows it.
  5. Choose Save Changes and Exit, commonly by pressing F10.
  6. Confirm saving and allow the PC to restart.

The wording and shortcut differ by manufacturer. On many Dell systems, select Load Defaults, confirm BIOS Defaults, then exit and save. Older Dell interfaces may use F9 or an option under the Exit menu before using F10. ASUS commonly documents F5 or a Default button followed by F10 or Save & Exit. See the relevant Dell instructions or ASUS instructions.

Do not confuse Load Defaults with Discard Changes and Exit. The latter abandons changes made during the current session; it does not necessarily reset previously saved settings. A firmware update is also a separate operation.

What to check after loading defaults

The first restart may take longer than usual while the firmware redetects hardware or retrains memory. If Windows does not start, enter BIOS/UEFI again and check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Boot order: Windows Boot Manager or the correct system drive should be first.
  • Boot mode: Modern Windows installations normally use UEFI. Switching to Legacy/CSM can make a UEFI installation disappear from the boot list.
  • Storage mode: RAID, AHCI, or another controller setting may need to match the previous configuration.
  • Secure Boot: Restore the setting expected by your operating system and bootloader.
  • TPM, fTPM, or Intel PTT: Keep it enabled if Windows security or encryption depends on it.
  • Virtualization: Re-enable Intel VT-x, AMD SVM, or the equivalent if you use virtual machines or emulators.
  • XMP or EXPO: A reset may disable a memory performance profile, leaving RAM at safer default speeds.
  • Fan and performance profiles: Custom cooling, power, or overclocking settings may be gone.
  • Date and time: A CMOS clear can reset the firmware clock.

Resetting defaults can undo an incorrect configuration, but it cannot repair a failing SSD, defective power supply, damaged Windows installation, or every firmware problem.

How to clear CMOS when BIOS/UEFI is inaccessible

Clear CMOS only when the firmware menu cannot be reached or a bad setting prevents startup. Desktop motherboards may provide a Clear CMOS button, a designated two-pin or three-pin header, or a removable coin-cell battery. The location, naming, and timing are model-specific.

Use the exact motherboard or PC manufacturer manual. Do not short arbitrary pins, and do not assume that a laptop battery is accessible or removable.

Generic desktop procedure

  1. Shut down the PC.
  2. Turn off the power supply if it has a switch and unplug the AC cable.
  3. Disconnect peripherals as appropriate.
  4. Press the power button several times to discharge residual power.
  5. Use the designated Clear CMOS button or jumper described by the manual.
  6. If the manual specifically permits it, remove or disconnect the CMOS/RTC battery.
  7. Wait for the period specified for that model.
  8. Restore the jumper, button state, or battery.
  9. Reconnect power and start the PC.
  10. Enter BIOS/UEFI, set the date and time, load defaults if necessary, and save.

For example, ASUS documents button, pin, and battery methods in its Clear CMOS guidance. Its examples use a button or pins for approximately 5–10 seconds. HP’s desktop procedure can include removing AC power and the battery, holding the power button for at least 60 seconds, and reinstalling the battery. MSI documentation gives model-specific examples, including a 3–5 minute battery-removal procedure and jumper methods of roughly 5–10 seconds. These timings are not universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After clearing CMOS, confirm that a jumper has been returned to its normal position and that the battery is installed correctly. Improperly positioned jumpers or incorrectly connected batteries can prevent startup.

BIOS recovery is different from a settings reset

A settings reset will not normally repair corrupted firmware. Use the manufacturer’s recovery procedure if you see a BIOS ROM or checksum error, a failed firmware-update message, repeated automatic recovery attempts, or a black screen immediately after a failed flash.

Depending on the model, recovery may use:

  • A built-in BIOS recovery function.
  • A USB recovery drive.
  • A motherboard BIOS Flashback feature.
  • A manufacturer-specific key combination.
  • Authorized service.

HP documents model-specific recovery methods, including a Windows + B key combination on supported systems. Use firmware intended for the exact model, board revision, and region where required. Never interrupt a firmware update, force an uncertain image, or download a random BIOS file. See the manufacturer’s official recovery documentation, such as HP BIOS recovery guidance.

Will resetting BIOS remove a BIOS password?

Usually, no. A Windows password, Windows PIN, BIOS administrator password, power-on password, drive password, and BitLocker recovery key are different credentials.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Loading defaults normally does not remove an administrator BIOS password. ASUS explicitly notes that restoring BIOS settings does not remove its BIOS password. Clearing CMOS may or may not affect a password depending on the system and password type; it is not a reliable bypass. Do not assume that removing a battery will unlock a modern laptop or business-managed PC.

Why BitLocker may appear after a BIOS reset

Changing TPM, Secure Boot, boot mode, or related firmware state can cause Windows to request the BitLocker recovery key. This does not necessarily mean that your files are damaged.

  • Retrieve the legitimate recovery key from the associated Microsoft account, organization, or saved recovery record.
  • Enter the key when Windows requests it.
  • Avoid repeatedly toggling TPM, Secure Boot, or UEFI/Legacy settings while troubleshooting.
  • Do not delete or bypass encryption.

Find the key before making firmware changes whenever possible. Microsoft’s Reset this PC guidance covers recovery-key requirements and Windows recovery choices.

BIOS reset versus Windows Reset this PC

Operation Changes firmware settings? Reinstalls Windows? Deletes personal files?
Load BIOS/UEFI defaults Yes No No
Clear CMOS Yes No No
BIOS recovery Repairs or reloads firmware Normally no Normally no
Windows Reset this PC: Keep my files No Yes Personal files generally preserved
Windows Reset this PC: Remove everything No Yes Yes, subject to selected options

Do not choose Reset this PC merely to undo an incorrect BIOS setting. Microsoft’s current Windows recovery options include Keep my files or Remove everything, with Cloud download or Local reinstall.

If the PC still will not boot

  1. Re-enter BIOS/UEFI and confirm that the system drive is detected.
  2. Check Windows Boot Manager and the boot order.
  3. Restore the previous UEFI/Legacy or CSM setting if you recorded it.
  4. Check RAID/AHCI or other storage-controller settings.
  5. Disconnect external drives and USB media.
  6. Allow extra time for memory training after a CMOS clear.
  7. Confirm that the Clear CMOS jumper is back in its normal position and the battery is seated correctly.
  8. Check power connections and, on a desktop, reseat memory only if you are comfortable working inside the case.
  9. Run the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics.

If the system shows a firmware error, remains black after a correct reset, or has a failed BIOS update, stop experimenting and use the exact manufacturer recovery procedure or authorized service. A resetting process cannot fix defective hardware or a corrupted operating system.
