Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo require an individual WordPress account to view a page, use a page-restriction or membership plugin that checks whether the visitor is logged in or has an allowed role. WordPress’s built-in Private setting is not for every logged-in user: by default, private pages are available to users with the necessary capabilities, such as Editors and Administrators. Password Protected uses one shared password, not account login.
Choose the right kind of access control
| Option | Who can view the page | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Password Protected | Anyone who knows the shared password | A shared password, not a WordPress account |
| Private | Users with the required WordPress capabilities; WordPress documentation identifies Editors and Administrators as roles able to view private pages | An eligible WordPress account |
| Page-restriction or membership plugin | Users allowed by the plugin’s login, role, or membership rules | A plugin configured for the audience and access behavior you want |
Pages are public by default. If the requirement is “any logged-in account,” or access for Subscribers or selected membership levels, use a plugin that explicitly supports those rules. A directory listing for Page and Post Restriction describes login- and role-based restrictions; check the current listing and plugin documentation for supported behavior and compatibility before relying on it.
Change a page’s visibility in WordPress
- Open the page for editing. In the Block Editor, find Document → Status & Visibility. In the Classic Editor, look in the Publish panel.
- Select the appropriate visibility or restriction. Choose Password Protected for a shared-password prompt, or Private for users with the required capabilities. For ordinary logged-in users, specific roles, or membership levels, install and configure a plugin that expressly supports that audience.
- Publish or update the page. The change takes effect when the page is published or updated.
- Test the result. Open the page in a logged-out browser, then test with an account for each role that should and should not have access. Check what an unauthorized visitor sees and whether the plugin sends them to a login page or displays a message.
For the built-in settings, see WordPress’s instructions for content visibility and the Password Protected option.
What the built-in settings do—and do not do
Password Protected shares access rather than identifying visitors
WordPress prompts visitors for the page’s shared password. Anyone who knows it can view the protected content; the setting does not verify an individual account or assign different permissions to different users. WordPress stores the password in a browser cookie so a visitor does not have to re-enter it on each visit. The documented behavior is one password at a time.

#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Do not assume this setting hides every piece of related data. WordPress notes that custom-field data is not automatically hidden by password protection. If theme or plugin code displays metadata separately, that output may need its own access check.
Private visibility is capability-based
A private page is restricted to users with the required capabilities. WordPress’s documentation names Editors and Administrators as roles able to view private pages; it is not a general “any logged-in user” switch. A logged-in user without the necessary permissions cannot view the page merely because they have an account or know its URL.

Configure a plugin for logged-in or role-based access
Plugin controls vary, so check the selected plugin’s current instructions rather than assuming every restriction feature works the same way. Before relying on a setup, confirm:
- Whether the rule checks login status, specific WordPress roles, or membership levels—and whether it admits the intended audience.
- What logged-out and unauthorized users see, including whether a login redirect or explanatory message is available.
- Whether restrictions apply to direct page URLs and to related output such as excerpts, archive listings, custom fields, and cached pages.
- Whether the plugin is compatible with your WordPress setup and is maintained for your needs; a directory description of features is not an independent security audit or compatibility guarantee.
After configuring the rule, test direct links as well as links from your site. Use separate logged-out and test-account sessions so you can verify both access and denial for the intended roles.

Page access and whole-site privacy are different
Restricting one page does not make the rest of a WordPress site private. WordPress says that hiding an entire blog from public view or restricting it to selected users is not part of core functionality. Whole-site restrictions require a separate solution, such as a suitable plugin or server-level restriction; choose based on the scope and access rules you need. See WordPress’s content visibility documentation.
