Back up the database before attempting a repair. Then distinguish a damaged-table warning from “Error establishing a database connection”: the latter can indicate incorrect connection details or an unavailable database server, not necessarily corruption. For identified damaged tables, WordPress offers a temporary repair page, and phpMyAdmin offers a table-level repair action. If neither resolves the problem, contact your host or consider restoring a verified backup.
Back up first and identify the problem
Repair operations change database state, so make a current database backup before running one. WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance advises keeping a current backup; if you are unsure how to create one in your hosting setup, ask your provider before proceeding.
Next, note the exact message and whether WordPress names unavailable or damaged tables. A table-repair procedure is relevant when specific tables are reported as damaged or unavailable. By contrast, “Error establishing a database connection” does not by itself establish table corruption. WordPress troubleshooting guidance and support discussions describe connection details and database-server availability as possible causes.
If WordPress reports a connection error
Check the database settings in wp-config.php: DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST. Compare them with the current values in your hosting account. If they appear correct, or the database service may be unavailable, contact your host to check server status and connection access before attempting table repair. The WordPress support discussion illustrates this type of connection problem; an individual forum case is not a guarantee of a particular diagnosis.

Choose a repair route for identified damaged tables
WordPress documents two routes: its built-in repair page and the hosting control panel’s phpMyAdmin interface. They require different access, and the available sources do not establish that one is more successful in every case.

The WordPress Developer Resources wp-config.php documentation explains that the repair feature must be enabled temporarily. It warns: “This should only be enabled if needed and disabled once the issue is solved.”

Open

Run the repair option offered on the page. If it reports a failure, or the tables remain unavailable, stop and move to the escalation steps below rather than assuming the database is fixed.

Remove the
WP_ALLOW_REPAIRdefinition fromwp-config.phpas soon as the attempt is complete, whether it succeeds or fails. Leaving it in place leaves the unauthenticated repair page accessible.Rank #4

Repair a selected table in phpMyAdmin
If the built-in route is unsuitable or does not resolve the reported table problem, WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance documents repair through phpMyAdmin.

Open phpMyAdmin from your hosting control panel and select the database used by this WordPress installation.

Select only the table or tables identified as damaged or unavailable. If you cannot confidently identify the correct database or affected tables, ask your host for help instead of guessing.

Choose “Repair Table” for the selected table or tables. Check the result in phpMyAdmin and then check whether WordPress still reports the original problem.
When repair fails: involve the host or restore a backup
Contact your hosting provider if a repair fails, the database server is unavailable, connection settings seem correct, or table data is missing. The host can investigate database-service issues that a WordPress table-repair page cannot address.

Confirm which backup will be restored and what data it contains with your host before proceeding; a restore can replace the current database state. WordPress support forum cases document both failed repairs and backup restoration, but those individual reports do not guarantee a recovery outcome: “Data Base Error” and “One or more database tables are unavailable”.
