For most apps, start with Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, then select Repair. If Repair does not help, you can try Reset—but Reset may remove local app data, preferences, or sign-in information. These controls are not available for every app; traditional desktop programs may need their own installer or Control Panel instead.
Before you repair: identify the app and the scope of the problem
Windows 11 uses different repair routes for different kinds of software. A Store-delivered app may offer Repair and Reset in Settings, while a traditional desktop program installed with an .exe or MSI may have a repair option in its installer or Control Panel. A program downloaded through Microsoft Store can still be a traditional desktop app, so the installer—not just where you got it—determines which method applies.
If only one app is failing, work on that app first. If several Windows apps or features are malfunctioning, the cause may be Windows rather than any one app; see DISM and SFC below.

- Check Settings > Windows Update for pending updates, and check whether the app has its own update.
- Confirm that the app supports Windows 11. For sign-in, syncing, or online problems, check the publisher’s service-status page; a local repair cannot fix an outage, account restriction, licensing issue, or app bug.
- Check available disk space. If the crash involves a peripheral or overlay, disconnect it temporarily and test again.
- If practical, check whether the problem occurs in another Windows account. If it affects only one account, that points toward an account-specific app profile or configuration.
Repair an app in Windows 11 Settings
- Save your work and close the app.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the app, then select the three-dot More button beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under the app’s reset options, select Repair, if it is available.
- Open the app and test the specific feature that was failing.
Repair is the least-destructive built-in choice. Microsoft describes it as an attempt to fix the app without losing its data, but app-specific behavior can vary. Back up important work independently rather than treating Repair as a guarantee that every setting or file is untouched. For details, see Microsoft’s guide to repairing apps and programs.

If Repair does not solve the problem: consider Reset
Return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Reset restores the app to a default state and may remove local app data, preferences, and sign-in information. Depending on the app, offline files, locally stored projects, downloads, game saves, or custom settings may also be affected. Cloud-synced information may come back after you sign in, but do not assume everything is synced.
Before Reset, check the app’s sync, export, or backup settings. For business software, confirm that local profiles, templates, databases, and license details are backed up. If Repair and Reset are both unavailable, that is not necessarily a Windows error; use the app-type guidance below.
Repair a traditional desktop program
For a classic Windows desktop program, try its installer first or use Control Panel:
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the program and choose Repair, if offered.
- If Repair is not listed, choose Change and follow the installer’s repair or modify workflow.
Some programs offer repair only when you run their original installer again. Get installers from the software publisher’s official site, especially if you need a particular edition or license. Back up the program’s data before modifying or uninstalling it.

Repair or reinstall a Microsoft Store app
For an app installed through the Microsoft Store, use this order so that you do not reset it unnecessarily:
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the PC if needed.
- Install pending Windows updates at Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, then select Get updates.
- Try the Settings Repair option, then Reset only if Repair fails and you have checked the data risk.
- If it still fails, reinstall from Microsoft Store > Library: find the app and select Install.
Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guide also recommends checking account sign-in and compatibility. A Windows Store Apps troubleshooter may appear in Windows troubleshooting options, depending on the release and configuration; use it if available, but do not rely on every PC having it.
Before uninstalling, check whether the app stores work locally, whether data is synced, and whether activation or a license key will be needed again. Reinstalling can remove settings and local data even when you later install the app from the same Store account.

If Microsoft Store itself will not open
wsreset.exe clears the Microsoft Store cache; it is a Store-specific step, not a repair command for every Store app and not a full reinstall:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the process to finish and Microsoft Store to reopen.
If Store still does not work, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Store > Advanced options, then try Repair and, if necessary, Reset. If Store failure is part of a wider Windows problem, consider DISM and SFC below. Avoid downloading replacement Store packages from unofficial sites; use Microsoft support if these steps do not help. Advanced: targeted PowerShell actions for MSIX apps
Most users should try Settings or the app’s installer first. PowerShell commands require the correct package name and user context, and they do not fix every kind of app failure. In particular, resetting a package is not the same as repairing it and may remove the app’s existing configuration.
For a known MSIX app, Microsoft documents this reset pattern:

If a package is installed but not correctly registered, a targeted re-registration can sometimes help. Microsoft provides this pattern for Calculator:

}Replace calculator with a search term for the affected app. Run PowerShell in the affected user’s context: a non-elevated window registers for the current user, while elevation changes the scope and should not be used casually. Re-registration will not help if the package is missing or its files are corrupt. On a work-managed PC, contact IT before changing package registration; policy, permissions, AppLocker, or deployment tooling may be involved. Microsoft’s modern and inbox app troubleshooting guidance explains these cases. Do not run broad scripts that reset or remove every AppX package, and do not remove Microsoft Store itself.
When to use DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are for a broader Windows problem, not the first response to one broken third-party app. Consider them when multiple built-in apps fail, Windows features are malfunctioning, or failures began after an interrupted update, storage problem, or suspected system-file corruption.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM and wait for it to finish successfully:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Then run SFC and leave the window open until it reaches 100 percent:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows if files were repaired, then retest the affected app.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide files needed to repair the Windows component store. If SFC says it found no integrity violations, it found no protected system-file corruption. If it says it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart and test again. If SFC cannot complete or cannot repair everything, follow Microsoft’s next-step guidance, which may include Safe Mode or a repair source. These tools repair Windows components and protected system files; they may not repair a third-party app’s private files, profile, or database. See Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions.

When to reinstall—or escalate beyond the app
Reinstall an app if Repair had no effect, Reset did not help, files appear missing or badly damaged, or the publisher specifically recommends reinstalling. Before uninstalling, check cloud sync, export or backup tools, local saves and projects, activation limits, product keys, plug-ins, templates, fonts, and custom profiles. Reinstall Store apps from the Store Library; get desktop software from its official publisher.
Move to Windows recovery only if the symptoms point to Windows itself—for example, Settings will not open, several built-in apps fail, the desktop is unstable, Windows Update is damaged, or a serious system change or corruption caused the problem. Microsoft’s recovery options include tools such as System Restore and Windows reset. Reset this PC is not an app-repair step: even the Keep my files option removes apps and settings. Review Microsoft’s Reset this PC guidance and back up important files before using it.

Avoid registry cleaners, random DLL downloads, unofficial installers, permanent antivirus disabling, and “one-click PC repair” utilities. They are not substitutes for the app’s supported repair route and can create security or data-loss risks.
