In macOS Tahoe, use Disk Utility → First Aid to check and repair certain file-system errors. Back up important data first. For an external or non-startup disk, show all devices and run First Aid from the volumes upward; for the startup disk, do this from macOS Recovery. First Aid can fix some logical disk problems, but it cannot repair failing hardware or guarantee that files are safe.

What Disk Utility First Aid can—and cannot—repair

First Aid checks a storage device’s formatting and directory structure and can repair certain logical errors. These are problems with how the file system organizes or records data. They can contribute to symptoms such as damaged files, errors when opening a volume, or a disk that will not mount normally.

It is not a general-purpose hardware repair or data-recovery tool. It cannot fix a physically failing SSD or hard drive, a defective cable or enclosure, or every problem that prevents a Mac from starting. Apple cautions that Disk Utility cannot detect or repair every disk problem. A successful run also does not prove that a drive is physically healthy or that you have a backup. See Apple’s First Aid instructions and the macOS Tahoe Disk Utility guide.

Before you run First Aid

  • Back up important files. Use Time Machine or another backup before attempting a repair. First Aid is not a substitute for a backup and does not promise to preserve or recover data.
  • Watch for signs of physical failure. If a drive repeatedly disconnects, becomes unusually slow, clicks or grinds, or contains your only copy of irreplaceable files, stop repeated repair attempts. Prioritize copying or imaging what you can, or contact a professional recovery service.
  • Check external-drive connections. If an external disk is missing or unstable, try a known-good cable and port, check its power supply or powered enclosure, and, if practical, test it with another Mac. Disconnect non-essential peripherals while troubleshooting.
  • Identify the target. Decide whether the problem is on an external disk, a non-startup volume, or the Mac’s internal startup disk. Do not assume every item in Disk Utility is a separate physical drive.

For an external disk that does not appear, Apple recommends checking its cable, connections, power, and non-essential peripherals before considering service. If the data is irreplaceable and the drive appears to be failing, avoid experimenting with repair or erase tools.

Repair an external or non-startup disk

  1. Open Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility, or use Spotlight to find and open Disk Utility. Apple lists both ways to open the app in its Disk Utility overview.
  2. In Disk Utility, choose View → Show All Devices. This reveals the storage hierarchy in the sidebar.
  3. Find the affected device and start with its lowest-level volume. If there are multiple relevant volumes, check each one. On APFS disks, you may see separate system and data volumes—for example, Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data—but names and layouts vary.
  4. Select a volume, click First Aid, then click Run or Repair Disk, depending on the wording shown. If asked, enter a password to unlock an encrypted volume. Wait for the check to finish and click Done.
  5. Repeat for the other relevant volumes. Then move upward in the sidebar and run First Aid on the APFS container, if present, followed by the physical storage device.

The order matters: Apple’s procedure is to check volumes first, then their container, then the physical device. Do not stop after running First Aid only on the top-level device. The number and names of volumes and containers vary by disk. Apple’s official repair steps show the complete sequence.

When the checks finish, quit Disk Utility, safely reconnect or remount an external disk if needed, and test it. If First Aid reports that it repaired errors, make a fresh backup as soon as possible and watch for the problem returning.

Repair the startup disk from macOS Recovery

Use Recovery when macOS will not start, when you suspect the internal startup disk, or when the Mac shows a flashing folder with a question mark. That icon means the startup disk is unavailable or does not contain a working operating system. Apple provides current steps for troubleshooting a flashing question-mark folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How you enter Recovery depends on the Mac:

  • Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac. Press and hold the power button until the startup options window appears, select Options, then click Continue.
  • Intel: Turn on or restart the Mac, then immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R until the Apple logo or another startup screen appears.

These are Apple’s Recovery entry instructions for Disk Utility repair. Once the Recovery utilities window appears, select Disk Utility and click Continue.

  1. Choose View → Show All Devices.
  2. On the internal disk, run First Aid on the data volume first if one is shown, then the system volume and any other relevant volumes.
  3. Continue upward: check the APFS container, then the physical internal device.
  4. Quit Disk Utility and choose Restart from the Apple menu.

Recovery screens and the exact volume layout can vary. If First Aid completes but the flashing question mark returns, First Aid has not restored a working startup system; follow Apple’s startup troubleshooting steps, which may include reinstalling macOS. If the internal disk is absent from Disk Utility in Recovery, check only what you safely can and arrange service if it remains missing.

What the First Aid result means

Result What it tells you What to do next
No errors found Disk Utility did not find a repairable file-system problem in that check. It does not certify the hardware or replace a backup. Restart or remount the disk and test it. Keep a current backup.
Errors repaired First Aid corrected a logical problem it could repair. Back up promptly and monitor the disk. Recurring errors or symptoms warrant further investigation.
First Aid failed Disk Utility could not complete the check or repair the issue. If the disk is stable, data is backed up, and the failure seems transient, you can try First Aid once more. Otherwise prioritize data recovery, service, or—only when data is safe—erasing the disk.
The disk is about to fail This is a warning of likely hardware failure, not a file-system error to fix with more scans. Back up what you can and replace the disk. Apple’s guidance is to back up and replace a disk reported as about to fail.
Device not visible A connection, power, enclosure, or device failure may be involved. Check cable, port, power, and—if practical—another Mac. If an internal disk remains missing in Recovery, seek service.
Erase failed The problem may involve hardware, a connection, encryption, or the partition map. Do not keep retrying destructive operations. Seek service or recovery advice, especially if the data matters.

If First Aid fails: choose the next step by data risk

If the data is backed up or disposable

You can try First Aid once more if the disk seems stable and the error could have been transient. If it still cannot repair the disk, erasing and reformatting may be an option. Restore your files from backup afterward. If the erase also fails, suspect a connection or hardware problem rather than repeatedly retrying.

If the data is not backed up but the disk still mounts

Copy the most important files first. Avoid erasing, repartitioning, or running unrelated “clean-up” utilities. If files are missing or unreadable, consider making an image or getting professional recovery advice; do not install recovery software onto the same disk you are trying to recover. Recovery software may help with inaccessible files on a stable drive, but it cannot make failing hardware reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the disk is missing, disconnecting, or making abnormal noises

Stop repeated First Aid attempts. For an external device, check its cable, port, power supply, and enclosure only if doing so is safe. Clicking or grinding from a mechanical drive, repeated spin-up failure, or a missing internal SSD calls for professional recovery or service—particularly when the files are irreplaceable. Erase and reformat only when data loss is acceptable

Warning: Erasing a disk deletes its contents. Do not continue unless the data is backed up or intentionally disposable.

If you have decided the data can be erased, select the correct disk or volume in Disk Utility and choose Erase. Confirm the target carefully before proceeding; selecting the wrong device can destroy data you meant to keep. Choose a name and format suited to the disk’s job, not simply the first option in the menu:

  • APFS is the normal choice for a modern Mac-focused startup or data disk.
  • ExFAT may suit a disk that needs to be used with both macOS and Windows, subject to the devices and software you intend to use.
  • Other formats are for particular legacy, Windows, or device requirements; they are not interchangeable alternatives for every disk.

For an Apple-silicon Mac’s built-in startup disk, Apple’s erase instructions use Macintosh HD and APFS; Erase Volume Group may appear where applicable. Erasing permanently deletes files. See Apple’s instructions for erasing an Apple-silicon Mac startup disk. After erasing an internal startup disk from Recovery, reinstall macOS there and restore data from your backup if available. An erase may address logical disk problems, but it does not repair physical failure.

Quick decision guide

  1. Is the disk visible in Disk Utility? If not, check external connections and power. If an internal disk remains missing in Recovery, seek service.
  2. Is the drive behaving as if it may be failing? If it clicks, disconnects, is very slow, or reports imminent failure, prioritize data recovery and replacement rather than repeated repairs.
  3. Is important data backed up? If not, back up or seek recovery before considering an erase.
  4. Does First Aid succeed? If yes, restart or remount, test, and keep a fresh backup. If not, consider one cautious retry only when the disk is stable; then choose recovery, service, or erasure based on whether the data is safe.

Do you need Terminal or paid repair software?

For the standard Tahoe repair, Disk Utility’s graphical First Aid workflow is the appropriate starting point; Terminal commands are not required. Avoid copying destructive disk commands from a generic guide: a wrong target can erase data, and encrypted volumes, APFS snapshots, mounted system volumes, and Recovery can affect what a command does.

Third-party recovery tools may be relevant when files are missing or inaccessible and the source disk is stable enough to scan. They are not a substitute for a backup, a physical repair, or professional recovery of a failing drive. Broader diagnostic utilities likewise cannot make a drive with failing hardware safe to keep using. For an internal hardware issue or suspected failure, use Apple service or a qualified recovery specialist rather than treating paid software as the next repair button.
