Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() to render a page into a PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Add path to save the image, fullPage: true to include the entire scrollable document, or call locator.screenshot() when you need one element. The same method can return a Buffer for image processing or visual comparisons.
Set up a basic page screenshot
Install Playwright, launch a browser, navigate to the target URL, capture the page, and close the browser. The format is inferred from the output filename extension.

})();The Page API also supports Firefox and WebKit. If you omit path, Playwright returns the screenshot bytes instead of writing a file.

A normal screenshot covers the current viewport. Set fullPage: true to render the complete scrollable page, including content below the fold.

});Full-page capture is useful for documentation and archival images, but very long pages can produce large images. For a specific rectangle, use clip with x, y, width, and height.
Render one element
Use a locator when the output should contain only a component such as a header, chart, or invoice.

They do not reveal content hidden behind another element. A scrollable element shows only the content currently visible inside that element.

Choose an output format and scale

To select a format explicitly, provide a matching filename extension or the API’s type option. Use PNG for crisp interface text, JPEG when smaller photographic files matter, and WebP when your pipeline supports it.
Return a buffer instead of saving a file
Without a path, the call resolves to a buffer. Pass it directly to an image processor, object-storage client, or pixel-diff tool.

Control animation
Screenshots allow animations by default. Set animations: 'disabled' to fast-forward finite animations and cancel infinite ones during capture; infinite animations resume afterward.

});Hide the caret and mask sensitive regions
The default caret setting is hide. Supply a list of locators in mask to cover matching elements with a solid overlay. The default mask color is pink #FF00FF; change it with maskColor.

});Inject capture-only CSS
The style option injects CSS for the capture and can pierce Shadow DOM and inner frames. Use it to suppress blinking, ads, or other dynamic elements without changing the application’s normal page.

});Use transparency when appropriate
omitBackground: true allows a transparent background. It does not apply to JPEG, so choose PNG or WebP for transparent output.

Set timing and cancellation limits
The screenshot API documents a timeout option and an AbortSignal. A signal does not disable the default timeout; configure both when a capture must have a strict upper bound. Check the API reference for the Playwright version you use, since options can be version-specific.
Capture after the page is ready
Navigation finishing does not guarantee that fonts, data, or lazy content are visible. Before the screenshot, wait for a selector, an application state, or a deliberate delay using Playwright’s page-waiting APIs. For pages whose layout changes continuously, combine readiness waits with disabled animations and capture-only CSS.
Screenshot versus visual regression testing
page.screenshot() creates an image; it is not an assertion. In Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for visual regression. The assertion takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match, then compares the final image with the stored expectation.
