Render HTML to a PNG by loading it in a real browser and calling the browser’s screenshot API. In Node.js, Playwright and Puppeteer both support the same basic flow: launch Chromium, navigate to a URL (or set page content), capture the page, and save the PNG. Use fullPage for content below the viewport, an element locator for a component, and omitBackground when you need transparency.
What “render HTML to PNG” actually does
A browser converts HTML, CSS, fonts, images and JavaScript into a laid-out page. A screenshot captures the pixels produced by that rendering process. This is different from converting the HTML source directly: browser layout, responsive breakpoints, web fonts, animations and asynchronous data can all change the final image.
The reliable sequence is:
- Start a browser engine.
- Create a page with the required viewport and device settings.
- Navigate to a URL or inject HTML with
page.setContent(). - Wait for the page’s important resources or application state.
- Call the screenshot method with PNG options.
- Write the returned bytes to a file or send them to another service.
- Close the browser and page.
Playwright: complete Node.js examples
Install the library and browser
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
The second command downloads the browser binary used by Playwright. In a container or CI environment, install the system dependencies recommended for your operating system as well.
Capture a URL to a PNG file
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This follows the documented navigation-and-save pattern in the Playwright Page API. networkidle is useful for pages that load data after the initial response, but it is not a guarantee that a single-page application has finished rendering. Add an application-specific wait when necessary.

Render an HTML string instead of a URL
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const html = `<!doctype html>
<html><head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
html, body { margin: 0; }
body { font-family: Arial, sans-serif; padding: 32px; }
.card { width: 640px; padding: 24px; background: #1769aa; color: white; }
</style>
</head><body>
<section class="card"><h1>Rendered HTML</h1><p>Saved as PNG.</p></section>
</body></html>`;
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 800, height: 600 } });
await page.setContent(html, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'html-card.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
When your HTML references relative images, stylesheets or fonts, give the document a suitable base URL or use absolute URLs. Otherwise the browser cannot resolve those resources.
Choose the screenshot scope and PNG options
Viewport versus full page
By default, Playwright captures the current viewport. To include the entire scrollable document, use fullPage: true:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'entire-page.png',
type: 'png',
fullPage: true
});
Full-page capture is documented in Playwright’s screenshots guide. Very long pages can consume substantial memory and may expose layout issues in sticky headers or virtualized lists. For reports, consider a deliberate print layout or capture sections separately.
Capture one element
Use a locator when the output should be a chart, card or other component rather than the page:
const card = page.locator('.card');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'card.png', type: 'png' });
Playwright documents locator screenshots for this use case. Wait for the locator to be visible and stable before capturing it; otherwise a late layout shift can crop or move the element.
Return bytes for processing
Omit path to receive PNG bytes. This is useful for an HTTP response, object storage upload or image transformation:

const png = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
// png is a Buffer in Node.js
await require('fs').promises.writeFile('buffer-output.png', png);
The Playwright API also supports returning screenshot data for in-memory workflows.
Transparent backgrounds
Use omitBackground: true to hide the browser’s default page background:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'transparent.png',
type: 'png',
omitBackground: true
});
Transparency applies to PNG, not JPEG. Make sure the page itself does not paint an opaque background on html or body, and verify that downstream software preserves the alpha channel.
Control dimensions and pixel density
Set the CSS viewport when responsive layout matters. Increase deviceScaleFactor for a higher-pixel-density image:
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 720 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2
});
A scale factor of 2 produces twice as many device pixels in each dimension (and roughly four times as many pixels overall). It also increases file size and memory use.

Make dynamic pages deterministic
Wait for a known selector
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard');
await page.locator('[data-rendered="true"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', type: 'png' });
Wait for fonts and images
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.ready;
await Promise.all(Array.from(document.images).map(img => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
});
}));
});
For animations, disable motion with an injected stylesheet or wait until the application reaches a stable state. Avoid relying only on a fixed sleep: a short delay can capture incomplete content, while a long delay slows every job.

Log in through the page before capture, or create a browser context with the cookies and headers your application requires. Never put credentials in a public screenshot URL or commit them to source control. If the page is cross-origin, confirm that its resources permit the browser to load them; a screenshot cannot display assets that the page itself failed to fetch.
Puppeteer alternative
Puppeteer exposes a comparable launch, navigation, screenshot and close workflow. Its Page.screenshot() documentation describes PNG as the default image type, supports fullPage and omitBackground, and returns a Uint8Array by default (or a base64 string when requested).
npm install puppeteer
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'puppeteer.png', type: 'png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Neither the Playwright nor Puppeteer documentation establishes a universal speed, fidelity or reliability winner. Choose the library that matches your existing language, browser automation and deployment stack, then verify the required capture scope and output form.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response headers. It supports PNG, JPEG and WebP, full pages with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, transparent backgrounds, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns the image without you maintaining Playwright or Puppeteer. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Plans include every feature, with yearly billing offering two months free.

Troubleshooting checklist
The image is blank or missing content
- Confirm the URL is reachable from the machine running the browser.
- Wait for a selector that proves application rendering finished.
- Wait for fonts and images, and check browser console or network errors.
- For protected pages, authenticate before the screenshot and provide required cookies or headers.
Images or fonts are not loaded
- Use absolute URLs or a correct base URL for injected HTML.
- Check Content Security Policy, CORS and mixed-content errors.
- Keep the browser open until the resource requests complete.
The screenshot is cropped or unexpectedly large
- Use
fullPage: truefor the complete document. - Capture a locator for a single component.
- Inspect overflowing elements and fixed-position headers.
- Set an explicit viewport and device scale factor.
Transparent output still has a white background
- Use PNG with
omitBackground: true. - Remove opaque background colors from
html,bodyor a wrapping element. - Check that your image viewer supports alpha transparency.
CI fails to launch Chromium
- Run the Playwright browser-install command during image build.
- Install required operating-system libraries.
- Use a browser version compatible with the installed automation package.
- Close every page and browser in a
finallyblock so failed jobs do not exhaust resources.
Performance, reliability and cost decisions
Reuse a browser process for batches, but create isolated contexts or pages for separate users. Limit concurrency to the memory available on the worker. Full-page and high-scale captures cost more CPU and memory than viewport PNGs. Cache deterministic pages when acceptable, and record the URL, viewport, browser version and wait condition with each image so a later mismatch can be diagnosed.
Self-hosted Playwright or Puppeteer gives control over browser version, network access and private data, but you operate patching, capacity and failures. A hosted API trades that operational work for per-shot pricing and service-specific limits. The available documentation supports both libraries as viable browser-based paths, but does not provide a measured performance ranking.

FAQ
Can I render HTML without opening a visible browser window?
Yes. Playwright and Puppeteer launch headless browser instances by default in typical server usage; the rendering engine still performs normal browser layout before producing the PNG.
Should I use PNG or JPEG?
Use PNG for lossless text, UI and transparency. Choose JPEG only when a smaller photographic image matters more than lossless edges or an alpha channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes a screenshot include content hidden below a lazy-loaded viewport?
Not automatically in every application. Trigger the page’s lazy-loading behavior or use a service and option that explicitly loads lazy images before full-page capture.

The Bottom Line
For code you control, Playwright or Puppeteer provide a direct browser-rendered HTML-to-PNG workflow. Use explicit waits, a deliberate viewport and the appropriate full-page, element, buffer or transparency option. If you would rather call an endpoint than maintain browser binaries, ScreenshotNeo provides the hosted path with cleanup, billing verdicts and an MCP server.
