Google Sheets does not render HTML into a screenshot. First use a browser or screenshot service to turn the webpage into an image; then display that image in Sheets with the IMAGE function or insert it with Apps Script. The right method depends on whether you have a public image URL, image bytes, or only a webpage URL.
Can Google Sheets render HTML?
No. Sheets’ IMAGE function displays an image from a URL; it is not a browser and does not turn HTML or a webpage URL into a screenshot. Render the page first, save or host the resulting image, and then add that image to the spreadsheet.
How do I put a website screenshot in Google Sheets?
If the screenshot already has an image URL accessible to Google Sheets, put that URL in a cell—for example, A2—and enter this formula in the cell where you want the image:
=IMAGE(A2)
The URL must point to an image, not the original webpage. Google’s IMAGE function does not support SVG files or URLs hosted on drive.google.com. For a screenshot kept in Drive, use another insertion route, such as Apps Script with the image bytes.

Choose how the image fits
The syntax is =IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]). The optional mode controls how the image is displayed inside the cell:
| Mode | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (default) | Fits the image within the cell and maintains its aspect ratio. | Use for a thumbnail that should not be distorted. |
| 2 | Stretches or compresses the image to fill the cell. | Use only when filling the cell matters more than preserving proportions. |
| 3 | Displays the image at its original size; part may be cropped by the cell. | Use when original dimensions matter and cropping is acceptable. |
| 4 | Uses custom height and width supplied in the formula. | Use when you need explicit image dimensions. |
These modes change the image display, not the row height or column width. Adjust the sheet’s row and column dimensions separately if you need more room.

How can I display a webpage screenshot in a cell?
For a live website, the workflow has two stages: capture the page in a browser or screenshot renderer, then give Sheets the resulting image. A screenshot service can take the webpage URL and return a rendered image; check that its output is an image URL the chosen Sheets method can access. A service-generated URL may be temporary or private, so confirm that it remains accessible for as long as the spreadsheet needs it.
For a direct API option, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

After capture, use the image URL with IMAGE if the output is hosted at a URL accessible to Sheets, or use Apps Script to fetch and insert the image bytes. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details. The capture request performs the rendering; Sheets still needs an image, not the source HTML.
Can I use Apps Script to fetch and insert a website screenshot?
Yes, provided you fetch image data. UrlFetchApp.fetch(url) makes an HTTP/HTTPS request and returns an HTTP response; its content can be read as a blob and inserted into a sheet. Fetching an HTML page this way does not render it as a browser screenshot. Fetch the image from a screenshot process or service instead.

For example, if imageUrl points to an image, this script inserts its bytes over the grid at column 1, row 1:
function insertScreenshot() {
const imageUrl = 'https://example.com/screenshot.png';
const response = UrlFetchApp.fetch(imageUrl);
const imageBlob = response.getBlob();
SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSheet().insertImage(imageBlob, 1, 1);
}
Replace the example URL with an actual image URL. The blob passed to insertImage must be no larger than 2 MB. If you specify OAuth scopes yourself, external requests require https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request; Apps Script generally detects required scopes automatically. Requests originate from Google’s network IP ranges, which can matter if the image host restricts access by IP.

URL insertion versus blob insertion
Sheet.insertImage(url, column, row) inserts an image over the grid from a publicly accessible URL. Google Apps Script documentation states, “The provided URL must be publicly accessible.” The blob form, Sheet.insertImage(blob, column, row), inserts image bytes and has a 2 MB maximum. Use the URL form when public access is acceptable; use a blob when the script needs to fetch the image before insertion.
What are the image size and format limits?
The limits depend on how you add the image, so do not treat them as one universal Sheets cap:
IMAGEformula: the image must be available at a supported URL;drive.google.comURLs and SVG are not supported by the function.- Apps Script blob insertion: the blob has a maximum size of 2 MB.
- Manual image addition: Google Help describes adding PNG, JPG, or GIF images under 50 MB, either in a cell or over cells.
For a script-based workflow, also consider whether the destination host permits requests from Google’s network and whether your script has authorization for external requests.
Quick Recap
Which method should I use?
| What you have | Recommended route | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| A hosted screenshot image URL | =IMAGE(A2) |
Use a URL supported by the function; it cannot be a drive.google.com URL or an SVG. |
| Image bytes, or a need to fetch an image programmatically | Apps Script UrlFetchApp.fetch() followed by insertImage(blob, column, row) |
The blob limit is 2 MB, and external requests may require authorization. |
| A webpage URL or HTML | Render the page to an image first, then use either image-insertion route | Neither IMAGE nor an Apps Script fetch of HTML creates a browser screenshot. |
