To rename a bookmark in desktop Chrome, open More → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager. Find the bookmark, open its More actions menu, choose Edit, change the name, and save. This changes the bookmark’s label—not its web address or the website’s title.
Rename a bookmark in Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot More menu.
- Select Bookmarks and lists, then Bookmark Manager.
- Find the bookmark. If it is inside a folder, open that folder.
- Open the bookmark’s More actions menu and select Edit.
- Change the name and save or confirm the edit.
These are the labels in Google’s current desktop Chrome help instructions. Menu layout can vary slightly across operating systems and interface updates. In the edit form, change the Name field; leave the URL field alone if you want the destination to stay the same.
Use the bookmarks bar for a quicker edit
If the bookmark is visible on the bookmarks bar, right-click it (or open its context menu) and choose Edit. Change the name and save. If you do not see that option, or cannot readily find the bookmark, use Bookmark Manager instead. To show the bar, select More → Bookmarks and lists → Show bookmarks bar.

Folders and individual bookmarks use different actions. In Bookmark Manager, open the folder’s action menu and choose Rename, then enter the new folder name. For an individual bookmark, choose Edit. Chromium’s interface strings distinguish the folder’s “Rename” action from the bookmark’s “Edit” action.

Change the name while saving a new bookmark
After selecting Chrome’s star or bookmark control to save a page, use the confirmation panel’s Edit control if it appears. Change the name before closing the panel. The post-save interface varies; if there is no edit control, find the saved item in Bookmark Manager and edit it there.
Find a bookmark you cannot see
- Open More → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager, then check the folders, including the bookmarks bar and Other bookmarks where available.
- From Bookmarks and lists, select Show all bookmarks if that option appears.
- In desktop Chrome’s address bar, type
@bookmarks, then enter a keyword to search saved bookmarks. Google describes this address-bar search in its Chrome search feature announcement. - If the item still is not there, check whether you are using a different Chrome profile; profiles can have separate bookmark collections.
What renaming a bookmark changes

The name is a label stored with your bookmark. It does not rename the website, alter the page title in the tab, change the page’s metadata, or notify the site owner.

Will the new name appear on your other devices?
It can appear on other devices when the bookmark belongs to the same Chrome profile and Google Account and bookmark sync is active. Google says signed-in Chrome users can use bookmarks across devices, but that does not guarantee immediate propagation in every setup. A local-only profile, disabled or restricted sync, an organizational policy, or a different account or profile can prevent the change from appearing elsewhere. If the same URL was saved as multiple bookmarks, editing one entry does not necessarily rename the others. See Google’s Chrome bookmark and sync guidance.
If Chrome will not let you edit the bookmark
- Check what you selected. A folder has a Rename action; an individual bookmark has Edit.
- Check the profile. Make sure you are looking at the Chrome profile that contains the bookmark.
- Try Bookmark Manager. A bookmark-bar context menu may look different or omit the option you need.
- Check whether Chrome is managed. A workplace or school administrator can disable bookmark editing with the EditBookmarksEnabled policy. If editing is blocked in a managed browser, contact the administrator.
Can you rename bookmarks on Android or iPhone?
Google’s cited instructions describe Chrome on a computer, not current mobile menu paths. Mobile bookmark controls may use a different layout. If you cannot find an edit or rename option in Chrome on Android or iPhone, use a computer’s Bookmark Manager, where Google documents the editing workflow.
