You can’t directly leave another person’s X List (formerly called a Twitter List). X’s documented way to remove yourself is to block the List’s creator. First find the List under Lists you’re on, then open the creator’s profile and block them. This removes you from that creator’s List, but it also affects how the two accounts can interact.
First, check that you’re a member—not just following the List
Following a List means you subscribed to someone else’s List and can view its timeline. Being on a List means its owner added your account as a member. Unfollowing a List stops you following it; it does not remove your account from its membership.
To find Lists that include your account, look for Lists you’re on, rather than only the Lists you follow. X’s List instructions identify blocking the List creator as the self-service way to remove yourself.

- Open your profile or navigation menu. Its location can vary between iOS and Android layouts.
- Tap Lists.
- Tap the More icon, then choose Lists you’re on.
- Open the List you want to leave.
- Open the profile of the List’s creator.
- Tap the creator’s More menu, choose Block or Block @username, and confirm if prompted.
Remove yourself on X.com
- Open Lists from the navigation menu.
- Click the More icon beside the new-List icon, then select Lists you’re on.
- Open the unwanted List and go to its creator’s profile.
- Click the profile’s More menu and choose Block or Block @username. Confirm if asked.
The relevant account to block is the List’s creator, not simply someone mentioned in the List or another person associated with it. Menu labels and icon placement may shift as X updates its app or website.

What blocking changes
Blocking is more than a List-removal switch. While blocked, the creator can’t add your account to Lists, follow you, or send you Direct Messages. If you were following the creator, blocking unfollows them. X does not send a dedicated notification announcing the block, but the person may discover it by visiting your profile or trying to follow or interact with you. See X’s explanation of blocking.
After blocking, refresh the List and check Lists you’re on again. If you later unblock the creator, check your membership again rather than assuming what happens to the List relationship; X’s documentation does not establish every outcome after unblocking.

Can you leave without blocking?
X does not document a separate Leave List or Remove me control for a List someone else owns. If you want to avoid blocking, ask the owner to remove your account. The owner can manage the members of their List, but this option depends on their cooperation.

A protected account can still be added to a List, according to X’s Lists troubleshooting guidance. Protected posts remain visible only to approved followers, but your account’s presence on a public List may still reveal a public association or category.

Private Lists are visible only to their owner, so you may not be able to inspect a private List or identify it in the usual way. If you have evidence that a particular account is targeting you, you can block that account. If a List or related activity appears to involve harassment, abuse, spam, impersonation, harmful content, or another rules violation, report it through X’s available reporting flow. X says a List can be reported from its detail page or from Notifications; reporting asks X to review it and does not guarantee immediate removal. See X’s reporting instructions.
If you’re dealing with ongoing harassment, save the List URL and screenshots before its contents or the account’s status changes. Report relevant content or accounts as appropriate, and review your account’s privacy and notification settings. Blocking the creator remains the documented self-service option for removing your account from their List.

- You can’t find “Lists you’re on.” Make sure you’re in the main Lists area, not only the Lists you follow. Try the official X app and X.com; if someone sent you the List’s direct URL, try opening it. If the List is private, it may not be visible to you. If the app menu appears stale, restarting or updating the app is a reasonable troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- The List still appears after you block the creator. Refresh it, reopen Lists you’re on, and confirm you blocked the actual creator rather than a member or collaborator. Allow for a possible interface or synchronization delay; X does not specify a particular wait time. If it remains, save evidence and report the List or contact X through its available help flow.
- The creator’s profile is unavailable, suspended, or deleted. You may not be able to use the normal profile-blocking route. Save the List URL and screenshots, and report the List or related content if it violates X’s rules. If harassment is ongoing, block any accessible related accounts and review your privacy settings.
- You can’t block the creator. Check whether the account is already blocked, then try directly on X.com or in the official X app rather than a third-party client. A cached page or changed account status may also make the profile route unavailable.
