To change only the post or page you are editing, open the Block Editor’s three-dot Options menu, choose Editor, then select Code editor. To disable rich editing for a user, use the rich_editing user option; WordPress 6.8 removed the general profile checkbox for users who had not already disabled it. To restore the old editing screen, install and configure the official Classic Editor plugin.
Switch the current post or page to Code editor
This is the built-in solution when you want to see or edit the entire post’s markup instead of working in the visual Block Editor. WordPress calls this mode Code editor, not “Remove Visual editor.” The Block Editor opens in Visual mode by default.

- Open the post or page in the WordPress Block Editor.
- Select the three-dot Options menu in the top toolbar.
- Under Editor, select Code editor.
- To switch back, open the same menu and choose Visual editor.
WordPress documents this menu and the two editor modes in its WordPress Block Editor documentation. The change applies to the editing session and interface you are using; it does not change the site’s default editor or permanently disable visual editing for your account.
Disable visual editing for a user
The older Classic Editor workflow included a profile setting commonly labeled “Disable the visual editor when writing.” WordPress 6.8 removed that general control for users who had not already enabled it. If the setting was already enabled on an account, it remains available so the user can turn it off.

#1 Best Overall
WordPress core still supports the rich_editing user option, and the text editor remains available to all users. The developer-level example documented by core is:
update_user_option( $user_id, 'rich_editing', 'false' );
This requires an administrator or developer who can run trusted WordPress code in the site’s normal deployment method. Do not paste it into an arbitrary dashboard field or a post. The relevant version details and the supported field are explained in the WordPress 6.8 developer note; the conditional visibility of the old control is also described in the WordPress 6.8 accessibility improvements.

Use the Classic Editor interface instead
If you want the earlier, pre-Block Editor editing screen rather than Code mode inside the Block Editor, install the official Classic Editor plugin. It restores the classic editing screen and provides settings that can allow users to switch editors. Whether an individual user can choose an editor depends on the plugin’s settings and the site’s configuration.
This is a site-level plugin choice, not the same as selecting Code editor from the Block Editor’s Options menu. Review the plugin settings after activation before assuming every user or post can switch freely.

What the Classic block does—and does not do
A Classic block gives you a classic-style editing area inside a Block Editor post. WordPress says it can be inserted and edited with the classic visual editor tools. It does not replace the entire Block Editor screen with the old Classic Editor.
Use the Classic block when only one section of a Block Editor post needs the older toolbar. Use the Classic Editor plugin when the whole editing workflow must use the previous interface. See the Classic block documentation for its behavior.

Common problems and fixes
There is no “Disable the visual editor” checkbox
That is expected for many installations running WordPress 6.8 or later. The old control is not offered as a new opt-out for users who had never enabled it. Use Code editor for the current post, or have an administrator or developer set rich_editing through a supported code workflow.
You selected Code editor but the site still opens visually next time
Code editor is a mode for the current editing context, not a site-wide default-editor switch. For a persistent workflow change, configure the Classic Editor plugin or manage the user’s rich-editing option.

You cannot find editor preferences
Block Editor preferences are also opened from the three-dot menu, but the documented Preferences screen customizes editing features and layout; it is not the control for disabling Visual mode. Use the menu’s Editor section instead. WordPress describes these settings in its Preferences overview.
The Classic Editor plugin does not offer the same choices to everyone
Check its editor-switching and per-user settings. The available choices depend on how the plugin and the site have been configured.
