This is a fake prize scam, not an official Google, Mozilla, Chrome, or browser reward. Close the page without clicking it. If it returns, revoke the website’s notification permission, check extensions and recently installed apps, and scan the device if other unwanted behavior continues.
What the “5-billionth search” message means
The message is a fraudulent prize advertisement designed to make you believe you have been selected for a reward. It may show a countdown, hidden prize boxes, a supposed random winner, or a request for your name, address, phone number, email address, or payment information.
The wording is not evidence that you actually won anything or that Google is running a promotion. Mozilla Support identifies this message as most likely a scam and says it is not from Mozilla. Historical examples documented by BleepingComputer used prize claims and requests for contact information to persuade visitors to continue.
Seeing the page once does not automatically prove that your computer or phone is infected. It may have been caused by a malicious advertisement or a redirect from the website you were visiting. Repeated redirects, unfamiliar notifications, changed search settings, or tabs opening by themselves are stronger signs of unwanted software, an extension, or a browser-permission problem.

Do this first
- Do not click the prize, survey, download, “claim,” or support buttons.
- Do not enter personal, password, banking, card, or cryptocurrency information.
- Do not install a “cleaner,” antivirus app, browser extension, or update offered by the page.
- Close the tab. If it will not close, quit or force-quit the browser.
- When reopening the browser, do not restore the previous session or reopen all tabs automatically.
Do not click inside a fake “virus detected” dialog just to dismiss it. The close button may be designed to open another page or trigger a download.
Windows
Try closing the tab and then quit the browser normally. If it is stuck, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the browser in Task Manager, and choose End task.
macOS
Try quitting the browser. If necessary, press Option + Command + Esc, select the browser, and choose Force Quit.

Android Chrome
Close the tab and Chrome. If the problem is persistent, Google recommends removing recently downloaded problematic apps, restarting after each removal, and ensuring that Google Play Protect is enabled. For site notifications, open the offending site, choose Page info → Permissions → Notifications, and turn notifications off.
iPhone and iPad Chrome
If the pop-up cannot be dismissed, Google recommends turning on Airplane Mode, closing the tab, and then closing Chrome. To block future pop-ups, open More → Settings → Content Settings → Block Pop-ups.
Stop the advertisement from returning
First identify the symptom. A pop-up appears inside a browser page. A browser notification can appear on the desktop or lock screen after the site has been closed. An unwanted extension may inject advertisements or change searches, while adware can repeatedly redirect the browser.

Chrome on desktop
- Open Chrome and go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
- Open Notifications and remove or block unfamiliar websites.
- Review Pop-ups and redirects and block suspicious sites.
- Review Additional content settings → Intrusive ads.
Pop-up blocking and notification blocking are separate. Disabling pop-ups may not stop messages from a site to which you previously granted notification permission. Google’s guidance is available for pop-ups, redirects, and notifications.
Microsoft Edge
Open Settings and more → Settings → Cookies and site permissions. Review the controls for pop-ups and redirects and for notifications, then remove unfamiliar sites from the allowed lists. Edge blocks pop-ups by default, but notification permissions are controlled separately. Microsoft warns that fake prize and free-download pop-ups may be phishing attempts.

Firefox
Open about:addons and disable or remove extensions you do not recognize or remember installing. Also review notification permissions in Firefox’s settings. Menu labels can vary by Firefox release and operating system. Mozilla’s archived discussion about this scam is at Mozilla Support.

Check for unwanted software
Windows
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Sort the list by installation date.
- Remove unfamiliar applications installed around the time the redirects began.
- Restart the computer.
- Run a scan with Windows Security.
- Recheck browser extensions and notification permissions.
Repeated pop-ups and new tabs do not conclusively prove malware, but Google lists them among symptoms that can indicate unwanted software. Use Google’s Chrome unwanted-software guidance for the broader checklist.
macOS
- Open Finder → Applications.
- Remove applications you do not recognize, but confirm that they are unwanted before deleting them.
- Check browser extensions and login items.
- Empty Trash only after verifying the application is not needed.
Android
If pop-ups persist, restart into Safe Mode if necessary, then remove recently installed or suspicious apps one at a time. Restart normally after each removal. Confirm that Google Play Protect scanning is enabled. Do not install a “virus removal” app advertised by the scam page.
When to reset the browser
A reset is unnecessary for a one-time redirect that stops after the tab is closed. Consider resetting Chrome if unknown extensions return, the homepage or search engine changed, settings were altered without consent, or redirects continue after notification permissions and suspicious software have been removed.

In Chrome, open Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults → Reset settings. A reset can affect customized settings, extensions, cookies, startup pages, and search preferences. Extensions may need to be enabled again afterward; restore only extensions you trust.
A browser reset does not guarantee removal of operating-system-level unwanted software, and it cannot undo information already submitted to a scammer.
If you entered information
- Email or phone number: Expect spam, phishing messages, and follow-up scam calls. Treat unexpected contacts cautiously.
- Password: Change it immediately anywhere it was reused and enable multifactor authentication.
- Card or bank details: Contact your bank or payment provider, request monitoring or replacement, and dispute unauthorized transactions.
- Address or identity details: Watch for targeted fraud and identity-theft attempts.
- Downloaded file: Do not open it. Delete it and run a security scan.
- Remote-access software: Disconnect from the internet, uninstall the software, scan the device, and change important passwords from a clean device.
Clearing cookies or resetting the browser will not retract information already sent to the operator.

Optional extra protection
For recurring browser-based scam pages and intrusive advertising, Malwarebytes Browser Guard is a free browser extension listed by its vendor for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. It is optional—not required to close this scam—and it does not prove that the underlying operating system is clean.
Use built-in protections first: Chrome Safe Browsing, browser notification controls, Edge’s pop-up blocker, Android Play Protect, and Windows Security. Download any security software only from the vendor’s official website. Do not disable Safe Browsing because a suspicious page tells you to.
When to get specialist help
Seek professional or trusted community assistance if redirects continue after removing permissions and suspicious software; security tools are disabled or cannot run; unknown accounts, extensions, or scheduled tasks reappear; or financial or identity information was exposed. Get help promptly if the device is used for business, healthcare, education, or other sensitive accounts.
