If “Send a Gift” is covering a Facebook post, photo or video, there is no verified global setting to switch it off permanently. If you mean a gift-related item you already sent in Messenger, you can try to delete it from the conversation. A paid gift or purchase is different: deleting a message will not cancel a transaction.
Can you permanently remove the “Send a Gift” button?
Facebook’s public message-management help does not document a global setting to hide the “Send a Gift” prompt. It appears to be an interface element, and whether it appears may depend on the content, account, device, region or feature rollout. That means changing privacy settings or notifications is not a reliable way to remove the button.
You can try dismissing it or troubleshooting the display, but these steps are not guaranteed to remove it permanently.
Try Clear Mode if it appears
On the post or video, open the three-dot menu and look for Clear Mode. Some users report that it clears overlays on certain videos, but reports are inconsistent, and the option may not appear on photos or other posts. It is not a documented, universal fix. If you do not see the option, move on to the troubleshooting steps below rather than assuming something is wrong with your account. User reports about Clear Mode vary.

Troubleshoot a prompt that blocks text or captions
In the Facebook app
- Close and reopen Facebook.
- Update the app through your device’s official app store.
- Check whether the prompt appears on every post or only on particular photos, videos, Reels or standard posts.
- Open the post’s three-dot menu and try Clear Mode if it is available.
- If the prompt remains, report it in Facebook under Menu → Help & support → Report a problem. Include a screenshot, your device model, operating-system version, Facebook app version and the types of content affected.
On a computer
- Reload Facebook and see whether the same post displays correctly in another supported browser.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions one at a time, especially custom Facebook skins, script managers, ad blockers or accessibility overlays.
- If ordinary reloads do not help, clear the site’s cached data and try again.
- Report the problem if the overlay persists.
These are ways to check for a temporary display or browser issue—not a guaranteed off switch. Avoid unofficial extensions that promise to remove Facebook controls; they can break the site or create account-security risks.
Delete a gift-related item you sent in Messenger
If you sent a message or gift-related item in a conversation, open Messenger or Facebook and find it. On a phone, press and hold the item; on desktop, hover over it and open its options. Select Delete, then choose the option you want, if it is offered. Meta’s labels are Delete for you and Delete for everyone, though labels can vary by context as older “Unsend” or “Remove” wording transitions. See Meta’s message deletion guidance.

- Delete for you removes the item from your chat view. Other participants may still see it.
- Delete for everyone removes the sent item from other participants’ chat views when available.
Deleting for everyone cannot undo something the recipient has already read, seen in a notification, screenshotted or copied. Options can also vary by message type, chat type, device and rollout status.

On Facebook desktop, open Messenger, select the chat, choose Options, then Delete chat and confirm. This removes the conversation from your inbox; it does not delete it from the other person’s inbox. Meta explains chat deletion here.

Delete a message request
In Messenger, open Requests, open the request’s options and choose Delete chat, then confirm. Deleting a request is not a recall mechanism for anything the sender may already have seen. See Meta’s message-request instructions.

A “Send a Gift” prompt, a paid digital gift, a Meta Quest gift, a Marketplace purchase, a fundraiser contribution and an in-game purchase are not the same thing. If money was charged, contact the support channel for the product or payment involved and check its applicable refund policy. Deleting a Messenger item or chat will not cancel a payment, and refund eligibility depends on the transaction.
