To stop WhatsApp from generating previews for links you send, turn on Disable link previews in the app’s privacy settings. On Android, go to ⋮ > Settings > Privacy > Advanced; on iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Advanced. Then enable Disable link previews.
Turn off link previews on Android
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings, then Privacy.
- Open Advanced.
- Turn on Disable link previews.
The setting is an account-level privacy control. WhatsApp’s Help Center says that when it is enabled, links you send to others won’t generate a link preview.
Turn off link previews on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings.
- Tap Privacy, then Advanced.
- Turn on Disable link previews.
The option is in the same Privacy and Advanced sections as on Android, though the route starts from the Settings tab rather than a three-dot menu.

WhatsApp documents this as a setting for links you send: those links will not generate a preview. It is not described as a control for editing or removing the thumbnail from one particular message while leaving previews enabled for other links. If you want to share bare links routinely, the global setting is the documented option.

A preview may include an image or other rich-card details, which is why a link can appear with a thumbnail after you paste or send it. The available guidance establishes that disabling previews prevents link previews from being generated; it does not specify the technical steps WhatsApp uses to create them or guarantee how every client will display links in every circumstance.
Why disable previews?
There can be a privacy reason to share a URL without prompting a preview. The Electronic Frontier Foundation warns: “Link previews can reveal sensitive information about you to the website you are linking to.” Its concern includes information associated with tracking-token URLs. If a link contains a unique token or other sensitive URL data, consider whether you want to share that address at all; disabling previews is not a substitute for checking the URL and its recipient.

WhatsApp Web and desktop
The documented steps above cover Android and iPhone. The available official and privacy guidance does not establish whether WhatsApp Web or the Windows and Mac desktop apps expose the same switch, or exactly how their preview behavior relates to the mobile account setting. Desktop menus and behavior may depend on the client version. Check that client’s current Privacy settings rather than relying on an unverified desktop path.
If the option is missing or previews still appear
- Check the path: look under Privacy > Advanced, not the general chat or notification settings.
- Look for the exact label: the setting is called Disable link previews. Labels and menu placement can move as WhatsApp updates.
- Confirm the switch is enabled: reopening the setting lets you verify its current state.
- Check which client you are using: the documented instructions are for Android and iPhone; a Web or desktop client may not show the same control.
- Distinguish a link preview from an attachment: the setting concerns link previews. The cited guidance does not establish that it removes a separately attached image or changes how every kind of shared media appears.
The EFF guide was last reviewed on March 10, 2026 and lists WhatsApp version 26.8.76. Since menus can change, use the setting name as well as the path if your app’s layout differs.
