Start with your device’s built-in storage screen, check which categories are taking space, and remove only items you no longer need. “Junk files” is not a precise system category: it can mean temporary files or app caches, but it can also include personal downloads, photos, offline media, or backups. The steps below help you tell the difference before deleting anything.

Before deleting files, check what is using storage

Use the storage settings built into your operating system to see which categories and apps occupy space. Review the device’s estimate for each cleanup option rather than assuming that a large file is disposable. Be especially deliberate with Downloads, photos and videos, cloud-synced files, offline media, and old device backups: these may be useful personal content, and some deletion actions may affect more than the copy stored on your device.

Built-in cleanup tools are a sensible starting point because they show what they propose to remove and provide platform-specific controls. Avoid manually deleting system folders or arbitrary app-support files; use the storage screen or the relevant app’s own controls instead.

Remove junk files in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Review Cleanup recommendations

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Open Cleanup recommendations and review the categories shown, which can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
  3. Check the items and estimated space for each category. Select only what you are willing to remove, then choose Clean up.

Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance also describes deleting files you no longer need and emptying the Recycle Bin. Items left in the Recycle Bin still occupy space until it is emptied.

Use Storage Sense carefully

Storage Sense can automatically clear selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. It operates on the system drive, and its behavior depends on the settings you choose. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you configure those options. Cloud files can be made online-only rather than permanently deleted; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense cleanup. Review Microsoft’s Storage Sense settings and behavior before enabling automatic cleanup.

Use Disk Cleanup if needed

If Storage Sense is unavailable or you prefer a manual review, search Windows for Disk Cleanup, choose a drive, read the descriptions beside the checkboxes, and clean only the categories you select. The separate Clean up system files option can expose additional categories; review their descriptions and consequences before selecting them.

Know the difference between clearing cache and clearing storage

In an app’s storage controls, Clear cache deletes temporary data. Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. These actions are not interchangeable: clearing storage can remove app state and may mean signing in again or setting the app up again. Use it only when you are prepared to lose that app’s stored data.

Consider Smart Storage where available

Google also documents Smart Storage, which can automatically clear backed-up photos and videos when storage is nearly full. Availability and the exact steps depend on the Android version and device. Check that photos and videos are backed up and that you want them removed from local storage before enabling or using this feature.

Free storage on a Mac

  1. Open Apple’s storage view and review which categories are occupying space before choosing what to remove.
  2. Delete or move only files you genuinely no longer need. Check personal files and backups rather than treating size alone as proof that something is disposable.
  3. If applicable, remove old iPhone or iPad backups you no longer need, and in Mail use Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail to clear junk mail.

Apple’s Mac storage guidance covers ways to review and free space. Avoid manually removing system folders or arbitrary contents of the Library folder; use the storage interface and app-specific controls.

Free storage on an iPhone or iPad

Review device storage and recommendations

  1. Open Settings > General > [device] Storage.
  2. Review the storage recommendations and the space used by each app. Open a recommendation to inspect its details before applying it.
  3. Check likely personal-storage sources, including photos and videos, messages and attachments, downloaded videos, and files in Files or iCloud Drive. Remove only content you no longer need.

Apple’s iPhone and iPad storage guide explains the storage screen and app controls. Pay attention to cloud sync and backup implications: deleting synced content may remove it from other devices using the same account, while deleting a backup can remove a recovery copy.

Offload an app or delete it

Offload App removes the app itself while retaining its documents and data. Delete App removes the app and its related data. Review an app’s documents and data before choosing deletion; offloading is the less destructive choice when you may want to reinstall the app and keep its stored information.

What to check before you confirm a cleanup

  • Downloads and personal files: Open the files first; installers and old documents may be expendable, but the folder is not automatically junk.
  • Recycle Bin or Trash: Emptying it is what removes those items from the bin and releases their occupied space; do so only after checking its contents.
  • Cloud-synced files: Distinguish removing a local copy or making a file online-only from deleting the cloud copy itself.
  • App data and backups: Cache cleanup differs from clearing all app data, and old device backups can be useful if you need to restore a device.
  • Expected space: Prefer the amount shown by the device for the items you select. There is no established universal amount of storage that a cleanup will recover.

Will removing junk files make a device faster?

Freeing storage does not guarantee a speed improvement. Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB free on an iPhone or iPad to avoid slowdowns; that is Apple’s guidance for those devices, not a universal threshold for Windows, Android, or every device. See Apple’s advice for a slow iPhone or iPad if performance, rather than storage capacity, is the main problem.
