In most cases, you cannot remove iPhone Activation Lock yourself without the previous owner. The legitimate options are for that owner to remove the iPhone from Find My, for Apple to approve an ownership-based support request, or for an authorized organization administrator to release a managed device. If you bought a used phone and the seller will not or cannot release it, seek a refund rather than paying for a supposed bypass.

Why Activation Lock does not disappear after a reset
Activation Lock is part of Apple’s Find My feature. When Find My is enabled, the iPhone is associated with its owner’s Apple Account through Apple’s activation service. During setup or recovery, the phone checks with Apple to see whether it is still protected. The feature is intended to make a lost or stolen device harder for someone else to reactivate.
Erasing the phone removes its local data; it does not necessarily remove the account association. A factory reset, Finder or iTunes restore, Recovery Mode or DFU restore, iOS update, SIM swap, or carrier change is not a way to release Activation Lock. Apple explains how the lock works and what an owner can do on its Activation Lock support page and in its platform security guide.

That means there is no general, supported buyer-side bypass. A legitimate owner may still be able to recover their account, an organization may release its managed device, and Apple may review a support request with acceptable proof of purchase—but none of those outcomes should be assumed or promised.

Check that it really is Activation Lock
- “iPhone Locked to Owner” during setup: The device is still linked to another Apple Account. On iOS 15 or later, Apple identifies this protected setup state with that message.
- A request for the previous owner’s Apple Account during setup: Treat it as Activation Lock even if the wording differs. Do not pay or continue setup on the assumption that a reset will fix it.
- A passcode Lock Screen or Home Screen: This is not by itself proof of Activation Lock. It does mean the phone has not been handed over in the clean, erased state a buyer should expect. Ask the seller to erase it properly.
- A carrier or network lock: This concerns which cellular networks can be used, not whose Apple Account is attached to the iPhone. A carrier-unlocked phone can still have Activation Lock.
A prompt for the previous owner’s account is not proof by itself that a phone was stolen, but it does mean it has not been released for your use.
Best fix: have the previous owner remove the iPhone
If the seller or former owner can help, ask them to remove the iPhone from their account. They should enter their own credentials privately; they should never give you their Apple Account password.
If the owner still has the iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings and tap the owner’s name at the top.
- Tap Find My, then Find My iPhone, and turn off Find My iPhone. Enter the Apple Account password if requested.
- Erase the phone using Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Restart setup and confirm the phone no longer asks for the previous owner’s account.
Turning off Find My removes Activation Lock. Labels can vary slightly by iOS version; Apple’s Find My and Activation Lock guidance describes the relationship.

If the owner no longer has the iPhone
- The owner goes to iCloud Find Devices and signs in with the Apple Account linked to the phone.
- They select the exact iPhone from the device list and choose Erase This Device (or the equivalent erase command).
- After the erase, they choose Remove This Device. They should not enable Lost Mode or add a message or phone number for a device they have sold or given away.
- Once removal is complete, restart the iPhone’s setup and check that it no longer requests the former owner’s account.
Apple documents the remote process in its iCloud instructions for removing a device. If the iPhone is offline, a remote erase may not start until it next connects to Wi-Fi or cellular service. Apple also notes that Activation Lock removal and disappearance from the Find My device list may not happen at precisely the same time. The former owner should complete the process and the buyer should verify the phone at setup; a screenshot of a device list is not proof that activation will succeed.
Message you can send the seller:
Please sign in at iCloud.com/find, select this iPhone, erase it if needed, and then choose Remove This Device. I need to confirm that it reaches setup without requesting your Apple Account. Please do not send me your password.
If the seller is with you
Before finalizing payment, ask the seller to enter their credentials themselves, erase the iPhone, and let it restart. Begin setup far enough to confirm it does not request the previous owner’s Apple Account. Apple advises buyers not to take ownership until a used iPhone has been erased, removed from the previous owner’s account, and reached the Hello screen. A seller’s claim that the phone was “factory-reset” is not enough if the account prompt remains.

If you already paid and the seller is unreachable
Do not spend days trying resets or online tricks. If the transaction is recent, contact the seller in writing and request that they remove the device or refund you. If they refuse or disappear, use the marketplace’s return, cancellation, or buyer-protection process. If you paid through a provider that offers disputes, check its deadline and submit a dispute promptly.

If the phone’s history seems suspicious, do not try to circumvent the lock; contact the marketplace and, where appropriate, the carrier or law enforcement. Activation Lock alone does not prove theft, but it is a reason to stop and establish the device’s legitimate ownership.
Apple’s proof-of-purchase support request
If you are the legitimate owner but cannot reach the account holder, you can submit Apple’s Activation Lock support request with proof of purchase documentation. This is an ownership review, not an automatic unlock or a general bypass code. Apple decides whether the documentation qualifies, so approval is not guaranteed.

An invoice or receipt that identifies the iPhone by serial number or IMEI, includes the purchase date and seller or retailer, and identifies the purchaser is more useful than a vague statement that the device was bought legally. A marketplace conversation or handwritten note may not establish what Apple requires. If the phone came from a liquidation or recycling business, request an itemized invoice identifying the device and ask the seller to clarify its chain of ownership.

The account holder—not the buyer—should first try the email addresses or phone numbers they use with Apple, then follow Apple’s account recovery and password reset process. Once they regain access, they can remove the iPhone from Find My using the steps above. Do not guess, request, or take over another person’s credentials. Apple warns that losing access to an account or being unable to reset its password can prevent its owner from reactivating a protected device.
If the iPhone was inherited, the estate’s authorized representative or account holder may need to work through account recovery or Apple’s ownership-review process. A family relationship, death certificate, or probate document should not be treated as an automatic Activation Lock release; Apple determines what documentation it can accept.

If the iPhone belongs to a company or school
Contact the organization’s IT department or asset manager. Authorized administrators may be able to release a managed iPhone through their device-management system, Apple Business Manager, or Apple School Manager, including with an organization-held bypass code where applicable. These tools are for devices the organization is authorized to manage; a private buyer cannot use them to unlock someone else’s device. A phone already locked to an account generally cannot simply be added to an organization afterward.
Apple describes these administrator workflows in its Activation Lock security guidance and deployment documentation. Use the organization’s authorized administrator, not a technician who claims to have access to Apple’s management systems.
Methods to avoid

| Replace the logic board or another part | Hardware replacement is not a legitimate way to release the phone’s account lock. Apple also says some previously used parts from another Activation-Locked iPhone may be restricted or ineligible for service under Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare. |
Do not send your Apple Account password, device passcode, or remote-access access to anyone advertising an unlock. Ordinary repair shops cannot authorize removal of another person’s Apple Account lock. Apple’s official options are the owner-removal steps, an accepted ownership-based support request, and authorized organization management.

Used iPhone checklist: verify before you pay
- Turn on the iPhone and check that the seller has erased it. A Lock Screen or Home Screen means it is not ready for transfer.
- Start setup from the Hello screen and proceed far enough to confirm it does not request the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- If the account prompt appears, stop. Have the seller remove the device through Find My before payment; do not accept a promise to fix it later.
- Record the serial number or IMEI on the receipt or sale record, along with the seller and purchase details.
- Only complete the purchase after activation can proceed without the prior owner’s credentials. “Carrier unlocked” is not a substitute for this check.
If the owner cannot release the iPhone and Apple does not approve your documentation, the practical route is to return or report the device—not to buy a bypass.
