FunSafeTab is a browser hijacker and potentially unwanted program (PUP) that can change your homepage, new-tab page, search provider, and browsing results. To remove it, uninstall any related Windows application, delete the unwanted extension from every affected browser, scan with current Malwarebytes tools, reset browser settings if necessary, and restart Windows.
The original Malwarebytes forum guide was published on October 11, 2018, using Windows 7 and Malwarebytes 3.6.1.2711. Its indicators remain useful for identification, but its software names and menu instructions are not current. The steps below update the cleanup process for modern Windows systems.
What is FunSafeTab?
Malwarebytes classified FunSafeTab as a browser hijacker and potentially unwanted program, rather than a conventional destructive virus. It is associated with a browser extension or add-on that changes search behavior, redirects queries, displays advertising, and may produce sponsored results.

One documented search address is search.funsafetabsearch.com. Seeing that domain, a FunSafeTab toolbar icon, or a search provider named FunSafeTab is a strong reason to investigate. However, the presence of a browser extension in an official extension store is not proof that it is safe or desirable.

Signs FunSafeTab may be installed
- FunSafeTab appears in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox extensions.
- Your homepage or new-tab page changed without permission.
- Searches go through
search.funsafetabsearch.comor are redirected to Yahoo-backed results. - Results contain unusual sponsored links or excessive advertising.
- A FunSafeTab icon appears in the browser toolbar.
- Your chosen search engine returns after you change it, then switches back after a restart.
These symptoms can also result from another unwanted extension, a website notification permission, browser sync, or a managed-browser policy. Use the name and domain as clues, not as proof that every symptom has the same cause.
Before removing FunSafeTab
- Save open work and close browser windows.
- Back up important files before changing installed software or browser settings.
- Write down the unwanted homepage, search URL, extension name, and any related application. This information can help if you need specialist assistance.
- Download security tools only from official Malwarebytes websites.
- Do not delete random files from
AppData, browser profiles, or the Registry because their names look unfamiliar.
If the browser is continuously opening suspicious pages, close the tabs without clicking advertisements or fake “repair” warnings. You can temporarily disconnect from the internet until you are ready to download a scanner from a trusted source. If the affected computer cannot safely download software, use another trusted computer and a clean USB drive.

First check whether a related application was installed alongside the extension. On current Windows versions:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Sort by installation date when that option is available.
- Look for FunSafeTab or an unfamiliar program installed at about the same time.
- Check the publisher and installation date before uninstalling it.
- Restart Windows after uninstalling.
If the program is not listed, open Control Panel > Programs and Features and check there as well. Do not remove every recently installed program automatically; some may be legitimate software you intentionally installed.
Remove the extension from every browser
Check all installed browsers and all browser profiles. Removing an extension from Chrome does not remove a copy installed in Edge or Firefox.
Google Chrome
- Open Chrome and select More (⋮).
- Choose Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Remove FunSafeTab and any other extension you do not recognize after checking its publisher and purpose.
- Open Settings > Search engine and restore your preferred provider.
- Open Settings > On startup and remove unwanted startup pages.
- Restart Chrome.
If Chrome displays “Managed by your organization” on a personal computer, inspect the browser policies before attempting manual deletion. A work or school computer may be legitimately managed, so contact the administrator rather than removing policies.

Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (…).
- Choose Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Remove FunSafeTab or another confirmed unwanted extension.
- Open Settings > Start, home, and new tabs and restore your preferred pages.
- Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Address bar and search and select the correct search provider.
- Restart Edge.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox and select the application menu (☰).
- Choose Add-ons and themes > Extensions.
- Remove FunSafeTab or another confirmed unwanted add-on.
- Check Settings > Home for the homepage and new-window settings.
- Check Settings > Search and restore the preferred search engine.
- Restart Firefox.
The old forum instructions refer to “Refresh Firefox.” Current Firefox wording and recovery options may differ. A Firefox refresh or reset can remove extensions and customized settings while preserving some user data, but review the exact warning screen first.
Reset the browser if settings keep returning
Reset the affected browser when the homepage returns after editing, the search provider keeps changing, startup pages cannot be removed, or redirects continue after deleting the extension.
A reset commonly disables or removes extensions and restores default startup and search settings. Depending on the browser and method used, bookmarks and saved passwords may remain, while themes, permissions, cookies, and other custom settings can change. Confirm the browser’s warning before proceeding.
Temporarily disable browser sync while investigating. If a compromised profile is synchronized, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox sync can restore an unwanted extension or setting after local removal. Re-enable sync only after confirming that the unwanted item is gone from the account and other devices.
Scan with Malwarebytes
Download Malwarebytes for Windows from the official Malwarebytes website. The current interface may not use the same labels as the 2018 guide, so do not look for the historical mb3-setup-consumer filename or assume that every button is labeled “Scan Now.”
- Install and update Malwarebytes.
- Start a scan using the current application controls.
- Review the detections, paying attention to the file path, publisher, and detection name.
- Quarantine confirmed FunSafeTab or related PUP detections.
- Restart Windows if Malwarebytes requests it.
A PUP detection does not necessarily mean the item is a destructive virus, but it can still represent unwanted redirects, advertising, tracking, or exposure to questionable search results. Do not create an exclusion for an unresolved FunSafeTab detection merely because an application stops working.
Run AdwCleaner for a second cleanup pass
Malwarebytes AdwCleaner is designed for Windows adware, browser hijackers, PUPs, and unwanted preinstalled software. Follow the current official procedure:
- Open AdwCleaner and select Scan Now.
- Review detected PUPs and adware.
- Select the items you want to quarantine.
- Select Quarantine.
- Save work and close applications when prompted.
- Restart the computer.
- Review the cleanup log after signing in.
See Malwarebytes’ AdwCleaner scan and cleanup instructions. Do not select Run Basic Repair unless a Malwarebytes support agent specifically directs you to do so.

Quarantined items are made inactive and retained for review. You can later use AdwCleaner’s quarantine area to restore or permanently delete selected items; consult the official quarantine instructions before making that choice.
Verify that FunSafeTab is gone
Removal and browser recovery are separate steps. Confirm all of the following:
- FunSafeTab no longer appears in any browser’s extension or add-on list.
- Your homepage and new-tab page remain unchanged after a restart.
- Searches use your selected provider.
search.funsafetabsearch.comno longer appears.- New windows do not open unwanted pages.
- Follow-up Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner scans are clean.
- No unfamiliar related application reinstalls after reboot.
If FunSafeTab cannot be removed
An extension that will not uninstall may be restored by sync, installed in another browser profile, controlled by a browser policy, or supported by a related Windows application. Some hijacker extensions have also interfered with access to Chrome’s extension page or Firefox’s add-ons page. Malwarebytes describes these removal-blocking cases in its technical guidance on hijacking extensions.
- Temporarily disable browser sync.
- Check every browser and browser profile.
- Check Windows installed apps and browser-management messages.
- Run updated Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner scans.
- Restart and check the extension again.
- If it remains, use a reputable malware-removal support forum.
Do not manually delete extension folders, browser preference files, Registry entries, or entire browser profiles without a backup and a specific reason. Forced extensions or policy-based persistence may require specialist analysis. Firefox Safe Mode can sometimes help with an add-on that blocks normal removal, but use current Firefox troubleshooting guidance rather than copying old paths.

Redirects continue after removal
Check search-engine, startup-page, home-button, and notification-permission settings. If the problem persists, investigate proxy settings, DNS or hosts-file changes, installed applications, scheduled tasks, startup entries, browser sync, and other extensions. These are possible causes of continuing redirects, not proof that FunSafeTab changed every one of them.
Malwarebytes finds nothing
Update Malwarebytes and run AdwCleaner. The extension may already be gone while browser settings remain altered, the detection may have another name, or the issue may be caused by a legitimate extension, notification permission, DNS setting, or search-provider change. Test with a new browser profile and retain scan logs if you need help.
A quarantine breaks legitimate software
Review the detection path, publisher, and software purpose. Do not restore an item solely because an application reports an error. Establish that it is legitimate and current first; when possible, reinstall it from the official vendor instead of restoring a suspicious extension. Malwarebytes offers an allow-list feature for known-safe software, but it should not be used to bypass an unresolved FunSafeTab detection.

Prevent another browser hijack
- Use Custom or Advanced installation options for freeware.
- Decline optional extensions, search tools, and “recommended” offers.
- Avoid fake update alerts, deceptive download buttons, and unsolicited “repair” prompts.
- Check an extension’s publisher, permissions, reviews, and purpose before installing it.
- Keep Windows and your browsers updated.
- Review installed extensions periodically and remove those you no longer need.
- Use reputable security software with PUP and adware detection.
- Keep browser sync under control when investigating unwanted settings.
Bundled software and deceptive installation prompts are common PUP distribution routes, but they do not establish how FunSafeTab entered every individual computer.
