Remove a cookie banner before capturing the splash screen whenever you can. Open the page in a clean private session, make an explicit accept, reject, or close choice, wait for both the dialog and its dimming layer to disappear, and then capture. For repeatable work, use consent-aware automation or a tested selector; cropping or retouching an existing image is a last resort and must be disclosed when the screenshot is evidence.

Choose the removal method that matches your goal

A banner can be dismissed as a real visitor interaction, hidden cosmetically, or removed from pixels after capture. Those outcomes are not equivalent. A real choice can be useful for testing the page after consent. A CSS hide or API blocker produces a clean visual but does not prove that the site’s consent controls work. Editing changes the image rather than the page state.

Approach Records a consent choice? Repeatability Important limits
Private-window browser capture Yes, if you click accept, reject, or close Good for one-off work Manual and sensitive to timing
Browser automation with a click or consent blocker Usually, when it clicks the control Good across a test suite after selectors are maintained Selectors, iframes, delayed dialogs, and site changes require attention
Hide selectors or an API blocker No; it only changes the rendered result High once configured May leave a backdrop, and may not cover every vendor
Crop or retouch an existing screenshot No High for that one file Can misrepresent the original page; disclose the edit

Remove the banner in a browser, step by step

  1. Start clean. Open the URL in an incognito or private window. Existing consent cookies can prevent the first-visit banner from appearing, which makes a supposedly repeatable procedure misleading.
  2. Wait for the complete widget. Some consent interfaces render after the initial page load or appear only after a small interaction. Wait until the dialog, controls, and any backdrop have settled.
  3. Inspect the wrapper. Use the browser’s developer tools to identify the outer banner container, not just a text node or button. The wrapper normally controls positioning and visibility.
  4. Make an explicit choice. Click the accept, reject, or close control that matches your test objective. Do not treat deleting the element with developer tools as consent.
  5. Wait for disappearance. Confirm that the dialog and the gray or black dimming layer are gone. A screenshot taken during the transition can still contain a translucent veil.
  6. Capture and preserve the source. Save the clean image and, when the capture may be used as evidence, retain an unedited original from the same run with its URL and timestamp.

When the banner is inside an iframe

A consent manager may render its controls in an iframe, including a cross-origin frame. A top-level document.querySelector or automation call can therefore report that no button exists even while you can see one. Locate the iframe first, then use a frame-aware locator and identify the control by its accessible role or label. For example, in Playwright-style JavaScript, the pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const consentFrame = page.frameLocator('iframe[title*="consent" i]');
await consentFrame.getByRole('button', { name: /reject|decline|close/i }).click();
await page.waitForTimeout(500);

The selector in this example is only a starting point; inspect the actual frame title and button label on your site. Shadow DOM can create a similar boundary. Use an automation API that can pierce the component’s shadow root, or configure the component’s host element instead of guessing at an internal class.

When the dialog appears after scrolling or another action

Reproduce the action that triggers it before taking the screenshot. A banner that appears only after scrolling, opening a menu, or waiting for a marketing script can block later steps if it is not dismissed early. In a visual test, trigger the condition deliberately, dismiss the dialog, wait for the page to settle, and only then capture the target splash state.

Automate consent handling for repeatable screenshots

Use a built-in consent blocker first

Browserless documents a blockConsentModals=true screenshot option. Try that built-in behavior before writing site-specific logic; if it misses a particular vendor, add a custom selector and click action. A page-settling condition such as network idle should occur before you check whether the banner remains.

Allscreenshots documents cookie-banner blocking as enabled by default and provides blockCookieBanners: false when you intentionally need an unfiltered render. Keep that switch explicit in your test configuration so a future change does not silently alter the evidence you collect.

Use a selector when the vendor is known

For visual regression, Sitepager recommends adding the banner’s CSS selector to Dynamic Content Selectors, validating one page, and then expanding the scan. Target the parent wrapper rather than a child label. If the page is still gray after the banner disappears, add the overlay as a second selector. A common OneTrust pair is #onetrust-banner-sdk, .onetrust-pc-dark-filter.

Use Yodeck’s automatic option, then a manual action

Yodeck’s documentation says: “Try the automatic option first. The Hide Cookie Banner automation (BETA) removes most cookie banners for you, with no script to write.” When that misses, its manual template is pause(4) click("""SELECTOR"""). Replace SELECTOR with the inspected control or wrapper and verify the result on more than one page template.

Keep filtered and unfiltered modes separate

A clean marketing thumbnail and an unfiltered compliance record are different artifacts. Give each mode its own job or configuration name. In a pipeline, archive the raw capture before applying a hide rule, and record the selector, click action, wait condition, and page URL alongside the output.

Remove only the visual pixels from an existing screenshot

If recapturing is impossible, crop the banner when it occupies an expendable edge and the remaining composition still represents the page honestly. Cropping cannot repair a banner that covers content in the middle of the splash screen.

Clone, heal, or content-aware tools can remove visible pixels, but they also create pixels that were not present in the page. Label the file as edited, keep the original, and avoid fabricating interface text, controls, or layout. For documentation, QA evidence, legal records, or compliance work, a fresh capture from a clean browser state is preferable.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, with full-page capture, lazy-image loading, element selection, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector or delay waits, network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and Authorization settings, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work, which helps when switching.

Consent cleanup happens before the shot: cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter list. These calls use the same endpoint and save the returned bytes directly.

Troubleshooting cookie-banner removal

The banner is gone but the page is still gray

The dimming overlay is a separate element. Inspect the remaining full-screen layer and add its selector to the hide list or wait for it to be removed after the click. In OneTrust deployments, the banner and .onetrust-pc-dark-filter commonly need separate treatment.

The automation says the button does not exist

Check whether the control is inside an iframe or shadow root. Switch to a frame locator, inspect the actual accessible name, and wait for the frame to load. Do not broaden a selector until it clicks the intended control rather than an unrelated “close” button.

The banner appears after the screenshot

Increase the settling condition: wait for network idle, a specific selector to disappear, or a short delay after the click. Some widgets load from a marketing script after the main document reports complete.

A blocker removes too much

Disable the blocker for one diagnostic capture and compare it with the filtered result. Narrow a broad selector to the wrapper, turn off only the unwanted cleanup step, or use an explicit click so page content is not hidden accidentally.

A consent click changes the page unexpectedly

Accepting consent can enable analytics, personalization, or other scripts that alter layout. If the goal is a neutral splash image, test reject or close instead and document the choice. If the goal is post-consent behavior, keep the accept path and capture only after the resulting navigation and network activity settle.

Reliability and evidence checklist

  • Use a fresh browser context when validating first-visit behavior.
  • Record the URL, viewport, device scale, timestamp, consent action, selector or blocker setting, and wait condition.
  • Check both the dialog and its overlay before saving the image.
  • Test at least one page with an iframe or delayed widget if those patterns occur in your site set.
  • Keep an unfiltered original whenever the screenshot supports QA, legal, compliance, or an investigation.
  • Mark any crop or retouch operation in the filename or accompanying metadata.
  • For automated services, inspect the returned verdict and billing headers rather than assuming a visually plausible image represents a successful page load.

FAQ

Should I click Accept or Reject?

Choose the action that matches the behavior you are documenting. Use Accept to test the post-consent experience, Reject to test the privacy-preserving path, and Close only when the site treats closing as a distinct outcome. There is no universally correct choice.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

How should an edited screenshot be documented?

Keep the original file, note the editing operation and date, and identify the URL and capture conditions. A viewer should be able to distinguish a clean recapture from pixels removed after the fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I click Accept or Reject?

Choose the action that matches the behavior you are documenting: Accept for post-consent behavior, Reject for the privacy-preserving path, or Close when it is a distinct site outcome.

How should an edited screenshot be documented?

Keep the original, record the operation and date, and include the URL and capture conditions so the edited file cannot be mistaken for a clean recapture.
