WordPress archive pages are generated views—not usually items you can delete from the Pages screen. First decide what you actually want: redesign the archive, change its URL prefix, block public access, redirect it, or keep it live while discouraging search engines from indexing it. Each outcome uses a different control.
What counts as an archive page in WordPress?
An archive groups published content by metadata or taxonomy. Common examples include:
- Category archives
- Tag archives
- Author archives
- Date archives
- Custom-taxonomy archives
- Archives for public custom post types
Because these views are generated from your posts and rewrite rules, deleting an ordinary Page will not remove them. Identify the exact archive type and URL before changing anything.
Choose the result you need
| Your goal | Correct approach | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Change the design | Edit the archive template used by your theme. | It does not remove the URL. |
| Change the URL prefix | Adjust the category or tag base under Settings → Permalinks. | It does not disable the archive; WordPress does not provide a setting to remove those bases entirely. |
| Stop public access | Use an archive-type-specific plugin or code, then test the response. | There is no single documented core switch that disables every archive type. |
| Reduce search visibility | Set an appropriate noindex directive with a current SEO tool and verify the live output. | Noindex is not the same as removing the route, and search-result disappearance is not immediate or guaranteed on a fixed schedule. |
| Send visitors elsewhere | Implement a redirect appropriate to the archive and its replacement destination. | A redirect still leaves the old URL in circulation and must be tested for loops and relevance. |
Redesign an archive instead of removing it
If the archive works but looks wrong, edit its template. On a block theme, open Appearance → Editor → Templates and select All Archives or a more specific category, tag, author, date, taxonomy, or custom-post-type template when your theme provides one.
#1 Best Overall
The All Archives template can affect several archive types at once. A specific template is safer when only one type needs a different layout. Preview before saving: template changes apply to every page that uses that template, not just the preview currently on screen.
The Template Editor is available on block themes and on classic themes that have enabled the feature. If the menu is absent, your theme may require its own Customizer or template files instead.
Change a category or tag URL prefix
- Go to Settings → Permalinks.
- Enter the desired Category base or Tag base.
- Save the permalink settings.
- Open a real category or tag URL and confirm the new address works.
This changes URL structure; it does not stop WordPress from generating the archive. WordPress documents that category and tag bases cannot be removed from URLs altogether. Changing or saving permalink settings also refreshes rewrite rules, so check important post, page, feed, and archive links afterward.
Disable a category archive or another archive type
For a genuine access change, use a solution that explicitly supports the archive type you identified. WordPress support guidance commonly points to either custom code or a plugin for category visibility, but that advice is not a universal implementation for author, date, taxonomy, or custom-post-type archives.

Use a plugin
Choose a currently maintained plugin whose documentation states whether it redirects, returns an error, or leaves the archive accessible while changing its visibility. Configure only the required archive type, then test the exact URL in a logged-out browser.
Use custom code
Have the code reviewed against your WordPress version, theme, and rewrite setup. Put site-specific functionality in a maintainable location rather than editing a parent theme. The implementation must define the visitor response—such as a redirect or an error—and handle feeds, pagination, and equivalent archive URLs where relevant.
Rank #4
Verify the actual response
- Visit the canonical archive URL while logged out.
- Check whether it renders content, redirects, or returns an error.
- Test pagination, feeds, and trailing-slash variants if your site uses them.
- Search menus, widgets, XML sitemaps, and internal links for references to the retired archive.
- Confirm that the replacement destination is useful and that no redirect loop was introduced.
Keep the archive live but discourage indexing
Noindexing is a search-visibility decision, not a public-access control. Configure the archive’s search directive with a current SEO tool, then inspect the actual page output or response headers to confirm the directive is present on the intended archive type.
Do not promise an immediate removal from search results. Crawlers must revisit the URL, and the timing depends on the search engine and site signals. If an archive must not be reachable by visitors, use an access or redirect solution instead of relying on noindex alone.

Before and after checklist
- Record the archive type and representative URLs.
- Decide whether the goal is redesign, URL change, redirect, access blocking, or search-visibility management.
- Back up the site or use a staging copy before changing templates, plugins, or code.
- Preview template edits before publishing them.
- Test the exact URL logged out and check its HTTP behavior.
- Review internal links, navigation, feeds, pagination, and sitemaps.
- Monitor for 404s, redirect loops, and unintended changes to other archive types.
Common mistakes
Deleting a Page named “Blog” or “Category”
That removes an ordinary Page, not necessarily the generated archive route. Identify the archive URL and its taxonomy or post type first.
Changing the permalink base to hide an archive
A new prefix only moves the route. The archive remains generated under the new structure.
Assuming “disabled” has one technical meaning
A plugin or snippet may redirect, return an error, or continue serving the archive with different metadata. Test the response rather than trusting the label.
Applying one template change to every archive unintentionally
The All Archives template can affect multiple archive classes. Use a specific template when the change is limited to one category, tag, author, or other type.
