How to Remove Adware: first determine whether the ads come from a website notification or from unwanted software. For persistent pop-ups, redirects, changed search settings, or unfamiliar apps, remove recent software and browser extensions, run your operating system’s updated security scan, and reset the affected browser. If malware may have exposed passwords, stop signing in on that device until it has been scanned.

Before removing anything, identify the source

A normal advertisement on a website is not adware. A site can also request permission to send notifications; approved notifications may appear on the desktop, Lock Screen, or in Notification Centre even when no unwanted app is installed.

  • Likely a site notification: alerts name a particular website and stop when its notification permission is revoked.
  • Possible unwanted software: ads appear across unrelated sites, the browser redirects searches, the homepage changes, unfamiliar extensions or apps appear, or pop-ups continue after the browser is closed.

Do not click a pop-up that claims your computer is infected or sells an urgent security fix. Such messages can be phishing attempts. Download software only from the operating-system vendor, an official app store, or the software maker.

Remove adware from Windows

1. Uninstall unfamiliar recent apps

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label may differ slightly by Windows version). Sort by install date and inspect programs installed shortly before the symptoms began. Uninstall anything you do not recognize or no longer need, but do not remove a program merely because its name is unfamiliar if it is required by your organization or hardware.

2. Check browser add-ons separately

Unwanted browser add-ons may survive an app uninstall. Review extensions in each installed browser and remove those you did not install, no longer trust, or did not obtain from the browser’s official store.

3. Update Defender and run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then install any available security-intelligence updates.
  3. Choose Scan options > Full scan > Scan now.
  4. When Defender reports a potentially unwanted app, follow its requested action. A detection or block does not always mean the item has already been removed.

4. Use Defender Offline if the problem remains

If unwanted behavior returns after a full scan, select Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.

4. Revoke website notification permissions

A website that was allowed to send notifications can display alerts outside Safari. In Safari’s website settings, find Notifications and deny or remove permissions for sites you do not trust. On macOS, you can also review System Settings > Notifications to identify the sending site or app. Notifications alone do not prove that adware is installed.

Clean up Chrome when ads or redirects continue

Remove suspicious extensions

  1. Open Chrome and select ⋮ > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Remove extensions that are unnecessary, untrusted, or not obtained from the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Close and reopen Chrome, then test several unrelated sites.

Reset Chrome settings

If the homepage, search engine, new-tab page, or startup behavior keeps changing, open ⋮ > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. Review the resulting preferences and enable only extensions you trust. A reset can change browser settings, but it does not replace an operating-system malware scan.

Check account and system security

Update the computer’s operating system and review your Google Account security when symptoms persist. If cleanup fails, Google’s guidance allows for a computer reset or help from the device manufacturer; treat a reset as a last resort after backing up essential personal files safely.

What to do if passwords or financial information may be exposed

Stop signing in to email, banking, shopping, and other sensitive accounts on the suspected device. Update the device’s security software and run a scan. From a device you trust, change affected passwords and turn on two-factor authentication. The FTC’s April 2025 consumer guidance recommends seeking help from the device manufacturer, a reputable technical-support company, or a knowledgeable person if you cannot complete removal safely.

When to escalate instead of continuing to delete files

  • Ads, redirects, or unknown apps return after uninstalling and scanning.
  • Security tools are disabled, settings cannot be changed, or a second account shows the same symptoms.
  • You see unauthorized account activity, password-reset messages, or fraudulent transactions.
  • The device is managed by an employer or school; contact its administrator before removing software.

Preserve scan results and suspicious app names for a technician. Do not install a “cleaner” promoted by a scare pop-up, because the advertisement itself may be the infection or a phishing trap.
