To remove an Excel table without deleting its contents, convert it to a normal range: click a cell in the table, choose Table Design (Windows) or Table (Mac) > Convert to Range, then confirm. The data stays in its worksheet cells, but table-specific features stop working.
Convert the table to a normal range
Use the steps for your version of Excel. Make sure the selected cell is inside the table; otherwise, the table commands may not appear.
Excel for Windows
- Click any cell in the table.
- On the Ribbon, open Table Design.
- In the Tools group, select Convert to Range.
- Select Yes when Excel asks you to confirm.
You can also right-click a table cell and choose Table > Convert to Range.
Excel for Mac
- Click inside the table.
- Open the Table tab.
- Choose Convert to Range, then confirm with Yes.
Excel for the web
Click inside the table, right-click, choose Table, then select Convert to Range. The feature is supported in Excel for the web, though menu placement may vary by browser or account.

What changes—and what stays

| Filter arrows | Table filter arrows disappear. You can apply ordinary range filters with Data > Filter. |
| Structured-reference formulas | Excel converts them to ordinary cell references. For example, =SUM(SalesTable[Amount]) may become a sum of a cell range; the exact reference depends on the table’s location. |
| Automatic table behavior | New rows no longer automatically join the former table or inherit its table behavior. |
| Table controls | The Table Design or Table tab and table-specific options disappear. |
Conversion preserves the data, not every table feature. Microsoft describes the changes to filters, structured references, and table controls in its table-to-range guidance.

Remove the table formatting too
Conversion and formatting are separate operations. If you want plain cells, first convert the table to a range, select the resulting range, then choose Home > Clear > Clear Formats. This removes cell formatting such as fills, fonts, and borders; it does not delete the cell contents.

Do not confuse this with Clear in the table-style gallery. That removes or resets the table’s style but leaves the table object intact. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Excel table formatting guidance.

If you only want to change the table’s appearance or controls
- Remove the colors or banding but keep table features: click in the table, open the table-style gallery, and choose Clear. The table remains a table.
- Remove banded rows only: turn off Banded Rows in the table-style options.
- Hide filter arrows only: turn off Filter Button in the table-style options.
- Keep filtering after conversion: convert to a range, select the data, and use Data > Filter.

Check formulas and workbook dependencies first
If the workbook is important or used for reporting, save a backup copy before converting. Review these items in particular:

- Structured references: Look for formulas containing the table name, such as
SalesTable, or column references such asSalesTable[Amount]. Excel converts structured references to ordinary cell references, so inspect key formulas after conversion. - Total Row: If the table has one, check the formula afterward. Table-specific Total Row controls no longer apply; use an ordinary formula such as
SUM,AVERAGE, orCOUNTif needed. - Charts, PivotTables, named ranges, and external workflows: If any use the table name or depend on the table as a dynamic source, verify that they still point to the intended data. This is a precaution, not a guarantee that conversion will break them.
- Growing data: After conversion, new rows will not automatically become part of the former table. Keep the table if automatic expansion, calculated columns, or structured references are useful.
If another tool needs a plain-data copy but the original table supports calculations or reports, keep the original intact and create a separate copy for that workflow. Choose the paste option carefully: pasting values can discard formulas and other cell properties.

- Click a cell inside an actual Excel table. A formatted range that only looks like a table may not have table controls.
- If the table was already converted, the Table Design or Table tab will no longer appear.
- If the sheet is protected, unprotect it or ask someone with permission to change the table structure.
Undo a conversion
If you converted the wrong table, undo immediately with Ctrl+Z on Windows or Command+Z on Mac. Excel for the web also has Undo. If you saved and closed the workbook, restore a backup or check version history if the workbook’s storage service and account provide it.
