The right fix depends on where the account appears. To dismiss one recommendation, tap its X, three-dot menu, Hide or Not interested control, if shown. Search history, recommendation notifications, saved logins and suggestions of your own profile are separate features, so there is no single iPhone switch that removes them all.
First, identify what you’re seeing
- A profile card with a Follow button: dismiss that recommendation on the card.
- A name below the Search field: remove it from recent searches.
- A push alert: turn off account-suggestion notifications.
- An account on the login screen: remove its saved login; it is not a recommendation.
- Your own account suggested on other profiles: turn off profile suggestions in Instagram’s browser interface.
Instagram’s controls and labels can vary by app version, account and rollout. Meta does not document a single iPhone switch that disables every kind of account recommendation shown to you.

Dismiss one suggested profile
- Open Instagram and find the suggested profile.
- Tap the X, three dots, Hide, Not interested or equivalent control beside it.
- If Instagram asks why, choose the closest reason.
- Close and reopen the app if the card remains on screen.
The available control depends on where the suggestion appears. Dismissing a card hides that recommendation; it does not guarantee the account will never appear again in another place. A profile might be recommended again in Search, Feed, Explore, Reels or another surface. Meta lists these among the places recommendations can appear (Instagram recommendation eligibility and surfaces).
Block the account only if you want the stronger boundary of blocking, not just a cleaner recommendation list. Blocking is different from hiding a card and affects the account’s ability to access or interact with your profile.

Reduce suggestions connected to your contacts
If Instagram is surfacing people you know, disconnect contact syncing. In Instagram, go to Profile → menu → Settings and privacy and search for Contacts syncing, Upload contacts or Connect contacts. Turn syncing off. If Instagram offers an option to delete contacts previously uploaded, use it too. The exact label may differ; Meta’s contact-sync help page is here.
Then revoke the iPhone’s contact access if you do not want Instagram to read your address book: open iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Contacts → Instagram and choose None, or limit access to selected contacts if that option is available and you still want to connect some people. Apple documents this control in its iPhone privacy guide.
What this does not do: removing iPhone permission prevents future access to contacts, but does not necessarily delete contacts already uploaded to Instagram. Use Instagram’s delete-synced-contacts option if offered. Contact syncing is only one possible source of recommendations, so switching it off will not eliminate all suggestions.

Reset Feed, Explore and Reels recommendations
If recommendations across the app feel off, try Instagram’s suggested-content reset. Go to Profile → menu → Content preferences → Reset suggested content, review the confirmation screen and complete the reset. Meta says the reset clears recommendations across Explore, Reels and Feed; recommendations then personalize again based on your future activity. It may also let you review accounts you follow. This is a fresh start for suggested content, not a permanent off switch. It also does not mean you have unfollowed accounts. If you cannot find the option, search Settings and privacy for “suggested content” or “reset”; availability and menu names may vary.
Remove a profile from Search suggestions
Tap Search, then the search field. If the account is listed in recent searches, tap the X beside it. To clear more entries, tap See all or Clear all under recent searches and confirm. In some versions, recent searches are also available under Your activity.

This clears search-history entries, not every account Instagram might rank as a suggestion. A profile may still surface due to connections, previous activity or other recommendation signals. For more on the search-history controls, see this search-suggestion walkthrough.

Turn off suggestion notifications
If the unwanted suggestions arrive as push alerts, open Profile → menu → Settings and privacy → Notifications. Look under Following and followers, From Instagram or a category named Account suggestions, then turn off the relevant alert. The category and route vary by version and account.
This silences the relevant notifications; it does not remove suggestion cards inside Instagram.

Remove an account from the iPhone login screen
An account shown on Instagram’s login screen or account switcher is usually saved login information, not a “Suggested for you” recommendation. Log out of the unwanted account and decline or remove saved login information if Instagram offers that choice. On the login screen, look for Manage accounts, a three-dot menu or Remove beside the saved profile.
If the username keeps appearing when you sign in, check whether iPhone password autofill is supplying it. If the account is linked through Meta Accounts Center, remove that link only if you actually want to unlink the accounts. Removing a saved login does not delete the Instagram account.
Stop your own profile being suggested to other people
This is a separate privacy control, not a way to stop recommendations shown to you. Open Instagram in a desktop browser or mobile browser, go to your profile and choose Edit profile. Turn off Show account suggestions on profiles, then save or submit the change. Meta says this controls similar-profile suggestions shown when someone taps Follow on your profile; turning it off also means your profile will not appear as a suggestion on other profiles. Meta documents the setting as a browser control: Show account suggestions on profiles.

It does not stop people finding your account through search, existing followers, links or contacts.
If the same person keeps appearing
- Check the surface: a dismissal may apply to one card, not every Instagram feature.
- Clear recent searches if you have searched for the person or related accounts.
- Turn off contact syncing and delete previously synced contacts if Instagram provides that option.
- Reset suggested content if the wider Feed, Explore and Reels recommendations need a fresh start.
- Block the account only if you want to prevent that account from interacting with or accessing your profile.
Instagram does not disclose every signal behind an individual suggestion. Mutual connections, contact data or prior activity may be relevant, but no single cleanup step guarantees the account will disappear from every surface. If a menu is missing, update Instagram in the App Store and search Settings and privacy for terms such as “contacts,” “syncing” or “content preferences.” Avoid logging out until you know your password and have access to your recovery method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off all suggested accounts on Instagram for iPhone?
Meta does not document one iPhone setting that disables every type of account recommendation shown to you. You can dismiss individual cards and manage contacts, search history, recommendation notifications and suggested content separately.

No permanent removal is guaranteed. The control dismisses the visible recommendation, but the account may appear again on another surface.
Does turning off iPhone contact access delete contacts Instagram already uploaded?
Not necessarily. Revoke access in iPhone Settings and, if Instagram offers it, separately delete previously synced contacts inside Instagram.
Will resetting suggested content unfollow anyone?
No. The reset changes recommendations in areas such as Feed, Explore and Reels; it is not an unfollow action.
